News - Arizona town calls state of emergency over migrant arrivals

PHOENIX (AP) — A small town in Arizona has declared a state of emergency over migrant families being dropped there as a growing number of border communities grapple with how to get the new arrivals to shelters in bigger cities that can help them.

The situation simmering in Gila Bend and other communities near Arizona’s border with Mexico comes as much larger groups of asylum seekers and unaccompanied minors show up at bigger cities in Texas and California that have shelters where they can stay until they can travel to relatives or sponsors in the U.S.

Officials in Yuma and Tucson have said in recent days that U.S. authorities have told them that large tent-like facilities designed to help deal with the influx of new arrivals will be erected in their cities and are expected to be operating by mid-April.

I live outside of Tucson and I haven't heard any of this. Gila Bend is in the LD in which I am running and the last time I checked a map, Gila Bend was 80 miles from the border, so it isn't really NEAR the border. Tucson is closer at 60 miles. Bisbee is closer at 10 miles. Sasabe, Nogales, Douglas, and Agua Prieta are ON the border.

Again, way to push a narrative, Corporate Media.

I want to thank everyone for giving me things I can use to start my campaign

I will be going to Hughes to get all the bank paperwork for the Act Blue fundraising site on Friday.

I've made contact with Train Democrats and am taking their online course and actively working with and speaking on the NDTC Facebook group (A few have already offered to help).

Thank you so much for your kindness. I know I'm new at this and, with my personality, I am a bit of an introvert. But DU has been kind and a resource over the last few days.

I will update here with things being done, because I, unfortunately, am all set to take on Joel John, but need to have the army before I attack (I am using the Art of War to base my campaign strategy).

Thank you again.

My response to the two mass shooting in GA and CO.

I don't know how to express how I feel. Depressed that it happened again. Angry that those with power do nothing to stop it and actively work to enable it again. Confused. Disheartened. My wife, a foreigner, asked me last night if this will happen in my classroom or to her if she goes out when she comes here with her green card. I simply told her "I don't know."

I keep asking when is enough going to be enough. And this is an issue we, as Democrats, have ceded too much ground on because Republicans turned it into a bumper sticker it: "Good guys with guns stop bad guys with guns." "Outlaw guns and only outlaws have guns." Empty platitudes that sound good, but with a second of logical thought shows them hollow and empty:

1: In CO, a good guy with a gun, trained and ready to use on duty, was also killed.
2: With that logic, we should have no laws, since a rapist, murderer, embezzler, or theft will do their acts, laws be damned.

So, I will use this bumper sticker logic to counter it: "Your family or your gun. Which is more valuable?"

My heart goes out to those in pain and those who lost some of the most important people in their lives. Right now, I have nothing more to say.

Position Paper - Taxation

I am running for Arizona House in LD4 to defeat Joel John and join Charlene Fernandez. This is my position paper on tax law. I have spoken to ten Enrolled Agent Tax Accountants (licensed by the IRS) and three CPAs. All say the numbers are solid.

I would like Arizonan's input on this.

Arizona needs jobs. The State should do everything possible to attract these much-needed jobs. Businesses will re-locate to places that have a low business tax rate and an educated workforce that can do the jobs. I call for the repeal of all business taxes in the State of Arizona, including the transaction privilege tax. This would make Arizona’s business tax climate the most attractive in the country. Businesses will relocate to Arizona, bringing the jobs with them. People go where jobs are.

For individuals, I will work to repeal the slew of nuisance taxes imposed on them in Arizona. Arizona should not levy on its residents any tax that isn’t deductible on a federal income tax return. The effect of this would be to increase the federal itemized deductions that can be claimed by Arizonans by an estimated $1B a year, increase the amount of federal income tax refunds given to Arizonans each year by the IRS by at least $100M at the lowest federal tax rate.

In order to balance off the loss of revenue due to the revocation of business taxes, the state would surcharge the individual rate by 15%, making the top Arizona income tax rate 3.5%. This would put Arizona into a competitive advantage with other states.

New to DU. New to the group. Decided to run for LD4 House seat

Greetings fellow Arizonans. I am a social studies teacher in the Baboquivari School District on the Tohono o'Odham nation. To be closer to my students, I will be moving to Sells in June.

With that, I have decided to throw my hat in the ring for LD4 House seat, trying to unseat odious freshman Republican Joel John and take the seat back for the Democrats, where I would serve with Charlene Fernandez.

I am a political neophyte, though I do teach it and have for 15 years.

The decision did not come lightly. It was made after I spoke to my wife, who was denied entry into the country, detained at the airport in Seattle without allowing me to contact her for three days, and then unceremoniously kicked out of the country by the CBP. I was threatened with arrest if I kept calling to contact her because I "couldn't prove I was her husband," that she "had no right to speak to me," and that they were getting "tired of me tying up their phone lines" with my "unnecessary nonsense (nonsense was not the word they used)." She had a valid, legally issued US visa, was in the process of starting her green card, and had all her COVID19 and marriage papers with her, and they didn't care.

While I know that immigration is not a state issue, the issues of police/prison reform, voting rights, taxation, and education, are the issues I will live and die upon.

I realize that John is well connected, and well funded. I am asking for your help to get me on the ballot. PM me if you want more information and we can talk privately about personally sensitive things (like my personal information) I do not feel as yet comfortable putting on a public forum.

I have been a lurker for years. And I am a believer in what the Lincoln Project did to Trump, taking the fight to the opponent, controlling the language of the debate, and constantly putting John on the defensive.

I hope I can find help doing this, as I am a political neophyte at 42 years old.
