But the fact is, the recent legislation pending in California is relatively modest compared to some of the sweeping reforms that gun-control advocates are demanding in other states and on the federal level — simply because most of the toughest curbs are already part of California law.
Among other things, nationwide advocates are seeking an end to the so-called “gun show loophole,” which exempts sales at gun shows from federal background checks. They also want to see the nationwide assault-weapons ban, which expired in 2004, revived. Both of those laws are in effect in California.
Advocates for gun owners say there isn’t much else California can do, given the protections for gun ownership enshrined in the Bill of Rights.
“Here in California, we have done everything we could possibly do to control guns,” said Sam Paredes, who runs the Sacramento-area organization Gun Owners of California. “Everything short of banning (guns), and they know they can’t do that.”

Delta Air Lines Chief Health Officer Henry Ting said that he believes that the federal mask mandate for airports and airplanes will be lifted on “April 18th or shortly thereafter.”
Speaking at CNBC’s Healthy Returns event on Wednesday, Ting said that while he does not know if the mandate will come down on April 18, the CDC, TSA, and the White House are all “looking closely at this” and will “certainly provide a roadmap.”
“We’ve always known from the beginning of the pandemic that all restrictions should be lifted as soon as it’s safe to do so,” Ting said, adding that there is a transition occurring right now from “a global pandemic to a seasonal respiratory virus.”
Ting, a renowned cardiologist who was named Delta’s first chief health officer in January 2021, said that amid the pandemic, the airline’s efforts around air ventilation, cleaning, and masking have resulted in “few if any outbreaks that could be attributed to a flight.”

AKRON, Ohio — An Akron man confronted a 16-year-old boy and shot him multiple times early Tuesday morning after the teen allegedly broke into the man's residence, according to the Akron Police Department.
Akron police said officers were called to the scene in the 700 block of Johnston Street just before 7:30 a.m. where first aid was given to the teen until EMS arrived. He was taken to Akron Children's Hospital in stable condition.
“According to the 74-year-old homeowner, the teen forced entry into his home,” police said. “At some point during the ordeal, the homeowner confronted the teen and discharged his firearm, striking him multiple times. The homeowner was uninjured during the incident.”
The 74-year-old Akron man, known to everyone as "Lurch" was half asleep watching television the morning after his birthday when he says an intruder knocked all the glass out of his front door and broke in.

That's a rather foolish thing to say. When one is involved in a justified case of self-defense, even a justified one (as this appears to be on the surface), the last thing one should do is machismo bragging about the case to the media.

First came the dramatic images of a miles-long column of Russian military vehicles on their way to Kyiv. Then came the dramatic images of those same military vehicles burning, destroyed, abandoned and scattered.
It was one of many episodes from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in which the entire world was able to follow in granular detail a battle that would have otherwise been shrouded in the fog of war.
Only a month in and Russia’s war against its neighbour may already rank among the most photographed and documented conflicts in recent history. Ukrainian civilians, the military and frontline journalists have all contributed to a mass of real-time visual information by sharing images and video on social media.
Every day, dozens of images of burning tanks, abandoned supply trucks and downed helicopters in Ukraine appear on Twitter, TikTok, Instagram and Telegram. During the first three weeks of the conflict, when Russia’s forces appeared to be beset with logistical and fuel problems, videos of Ukrainian farmers towing away abandoned Russian military vehicles seemed to emerge at least one a day — so much so that it became a meme.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Jefferson County Grand Jury indicted Quintez Brown on criminal attempted murder and four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment in connection to the Feb. 14 shooting at an office on Story Avenue in Butchertown.
Brown, 21, was arrested and charged after opening fire inside the office of Democratic mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg. According to an arrest citation, Brown fired several gunshots with a 9-millimeter Glock handgun toward Greenberg, who wasn't hit but said a bullet grazed his sweater. Four other staff members were in the office at the time of the shooting.
Greenberg and his staff were "successfully ushered away," Louisville Metro Police Chief Erika Shields told reporters near the scene. A motivation for the shooting remains unknown.
A group called the Louisville Community Bail Fund paid the $100,000 cash bond two days after Brown's arrest. Under the terms of home incarceration, Brown was fitted with a GPS ankle monitor and is confined to his home.

If only the Oscars themselves moved as fast as the numbers counters at ABC.
Mere minutes after fast-affiliate data for the 94th Academy Awards was out, the Disney-owned net that pays tens of millions a year to broadcast Hollywood’s biggest but stumbling night was out with the adjusted fast nationals.
Moving up a bit from the preliminary data, the 2022 Oscars now is estimated to have had 15.4 million viewers and snagged a rating of 2.9 among adults 18-49.
Apples to apples with the same metrics, that’s a 56% increase in audience over last year and 68% in the important demo. However, even with what looks like big leaps over 2021, the 2022 Oscars are still the second-lowest in history.

CNN)A hiker who had been reported missing in Montana earlier this week was found dead Friday after a suspected encounter with a grizzly bear.
Sheriff Brad Bichler of the Park County Sheriff's Office told CNN Craig Clouatre, 40, was hiking with a friend Wednesday in the Six Mile Creek area, which is about 20-25 miles north of Yellowstone National Park, when they split up.
"It is with a very heavy heart that I am writing this update. After an extensive search this morning we have located Craig," Bichler said in a Facebook post.
"It appears he had an encounter with a grizzly and unfortunately did not survive," Bicher's post said.

Just woke up and read about the Smith / Rock confrontation. I'm on Smith's side.
I don't really have a dog in this hunt. I don't follow celebrities; I've seen Smith in a few films, and while I've heard of Rock, I've never watched any of his routines. So, here's my understanding after reading about this for the last 15 minutes:
Smith's wife has a disease which has caused her hair to fall out and she appeared at the Oscars without wearing a wig. Rock made a tasteless joke mocking her in front of the Smiths, and while being watched by tens of millions. Smith walked up on stage and open handedly slapped Rock, telling him a couple of times afterward to keep his wife's name out of it.
I know nothing of the history between the parties.
All I can do is try to put myself in Smith's shoes. While I've never been married, if I was in the audience while someone on stage was making fun of my mother or sister's appearance due to a disease they'd contracted as they sat beside me, I can certainly picture myself walking up to the "gentleman" in question and slapping/punching him. I'm hardly a violent person; I haven't been in a physical confrontation of any sort since junior high school...but Rock's "joke" was over the line. I would then accept any legal consequences.
Was Smith's slap legally justified? Nope....but I'm glad he did it.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A crime watchdog raises concerns about the snowball effect of crime, after Wednesday’s murder of a man who was out on bond, in spite of two second-degree murder charges pending against him. Hollis Carter was killed in Gentilly, after his arrest for the murders of an Edna Karr High School student and his sister last March.
21-year-old Carter was shot to death Wednesday morning in front of a place that has trained dozens of ministers.
“When they heard it everybody turned and they saw a gentleman standing out with his rifle pointing in the car,” said Pastor Mike Smith, with Bethel Baptist Community Church.
Carter was out on bond in spite of being charged with 2 counts of second-degree murder, for the March 2021 deaths of 18-year-old Karr High student Caleb Johnson and his 25-year-old sister Breyiana Brown, who was killed wearing an ankle monitor. She was released from jail in spite of a manslaughter guilty verdict, which was thrown out because it was rendered by a non-unanimous jury.
