NPR: A Pound Of Flour To Go? Restaurants Are Selling Groceries Now

[link:https://www.npr.org/2020/04/13/831635629/a-pound-of-flour-to-go-restaurants-are-selling-groceries-now|

A growing number of restaurants are offering produce, dry goods and pantry staples to customers, in addition to their normal menu items. It helps customers buy essential items, provides restaurants with a source of revenue — and addresses a sudden disconnect in America's food supply chains.

That's because in many cases, different supply chains provide food to restaurants than to grocery stores.

"There are some players that sell food only only for restaurants — which means they have big bags of food, they don't have a brand," says JP Frossard, a consumer foods analyst at Rabobank. "The distribution is different. The type of product may be different."

Bill Barr is leaving some Justice Department staff hanging on if they get paid leave or flexible work
Published 6 mins ago on April 13, 2020By Sarah K. Burris

Attorney General Bill Barr and the top officials at the Justice Department are keeping the staff high and dry trying to figure out how to work in the era of the coronavirus crisis.

According to BuzzFeed News, a letter was sent by DOJ staff asking for clarification about paid time off and flexible work schedules.

“Each office within the Justice Department has been responsible for developing policies that address how employees can work during the pandemic, including how much flexibility they have while working from home, and how much additional coronavirus-related paid leave they can get while caring for elderly relatives and children home from school,” the report said. “Those policies vary, and some offices haven’t issued one at all, according to a letter from the DOJ Gender Equality Network (DOJ GEN) to management."

VERIFY: Sanitize your cloth masks in the washing machine, not the microwave

Social media posts claim you can sanitize your cloth masks in the microwave. But the CDC recommends you use the washing machine.

WHAT WE FOUND
A CDC spokesperson told VERIFY in an email, "The safe way to sterilize and clean a cloth face covering is in a washing machine."

A factsheet the CDC distributed on using cloth face masks goes into more detail. It once again says you should use a washing machine and talks about generally how often you should wash them.

It says they should be "routinely washed depending on the frequency of use." It doesn't delve into more detail than that.

"We know that COVID-19 spreads fast, and we know that it is deadly, 10 times deadlier than the 2009 flu pandemic,” he said.

The novel coronavirus is 10 times more deadly than swine flu, also called H1N1, which caused a global pandemic in 2009, the World Health Organization said Monday, calling for control measures to be lifted “slowly."

“We know that COVID-19 spreads fast, and we know that it is deadly, 10 times deadlier than the 2009 flu pandemic,” he said.

He pointed out that while COVID-19 had accelerated quickly, “it decelerates much more slowly.”

Empathizing, normalizing people’s feelings, assuring those in a crisis that they aren’t alone. Those are the tools Ferrer is using these days to help comfort patients at the Community Health and Social Services Center in southwest Detroit, where she’s the behavioral health and social work supervisor.

Some patients who were relatively stable before the pandemic are experiencing increased anxiety and depression, Ferrer said. The abrupt halt of enjoyable activities seems to be one factor. More grim are the stories of people with a loved one suffering from COVID-19 alone in a coma, who tell Ferrer they can't get adequate updates from swamped hospital staff.

“A lot of people want an answer. A lot of people want a solution,” she said of her patients' response to the pandemic. “So we really have to bring it back to empathy. I’m going back to those same skills that I used on the crisis line because people are in crisis.”

National hotlines that help people experiencing emotional distress have seen a spike in calls during the pandemic. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration saw an 891% increase in calls to its Disaster Distress Helpline last month compared with March 2019, ABC News reported.

According to a report from the Daily Beast, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar may soon be exiting the White House for refusing to sugarcoat information about the coronavirus pandemic when speaking with Donald Trump.

Azar, who attempted to alert the president about the looming COVID-19 pandemic threat in January, has rarely been invited to the president’s daily coronavirus press briefings which could be a sign that his days are numbered.

Published 14 mins ago on April 13, 2020By David Edwards

NBC legal correspondent Pete Williams reported on Monday that it won’t be easy for President Donald Trump to fire the federal government’s top infectious disease expert.

The question about whether Trump can oust Dr. Anthony Fauci surfaced after the president retweeted a “#FireFauci” hashtag.

According to Williams, Fauci is not a political appointee so he can only be fired “for cause.”
