Shelby County COVID-19 cases continue to rise, Tennessee reporting more than 5,000 cases
On Saturday, Doug McGowen, the chief operating officer for the City of Memphis, said new forecasts showing the COVID-19 surge in late May or early June in Shelby County means well all have to wait longer for life to return to some sense of normal.
If the surge is going to be in late May or early June, the restrictions that we have in place today are going to be endured by everyone for another 30 to 45 days to 60 days and we understand what a hardship that is on everyone, said McGowen. This is not the time to lift our foot from the restrictions. This is the time to continue monitoring the data and see what that data tells us.
On Monday, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said the city cant reopen until three things happen first: Positive cases must be declining; widespread testing must become more available, and there must be a dramatic increase in contact tracing, or figuring out who infected people came into contact with and getting those people to isolate themselves.
All of those things are to ensure that our hospitals are not overrun with cases, which is what were concerned with now, said Strickland.
No doubt that this is in response to repuke asshole Gov Lee announcing on Monday that he is going to reopen the state early May. His big proclimation coming just after Vanderbilt released a report projecting surge for the state in mid-June.
As one might expect, Gov Lee said his plan to open early-May is what shitstain wants.
He will announce Wed. whether he is ordering schools to reopen. 🤬
Thank goddess for our Dem leadership on the Memphis metro area!

WASHINGTON Every day, a team of public health officials turns up in the White House briefing room to lay out measures being taken to contain the coronavirus pandemic. A different team, expected to be formally announced as early as Tuesday, has begun meeting behind closed doors in the West Wing to tackle another matter paramount to President Donald Trump: how to begin reopening the American economy.
It doesnt work if you bring in the hallelujah chorus, said Thea Lee, president of the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning Washington think tank. Lee served on a short-lived manufacturing council that Trump established early in his presidency.
They just don't get it. Or, maybe they are going for a per capita NY scenario in every state! 🤬
TN Gov announced reopening early May. And will announce Wednesday whether he will order schools to reopen!
How to beat Trump's vote-trolling: Virginia and Wisconsin show the way

Trumps assault on the Postal Service and voting by mail is a threat to democracy. Democrats are pushing back.
These state-level victories show that Republicans' voter suppression efforts even when seemingly coordinated between GOP-dominated state legislatures and conservatives on the U.S. Supreme Court can be beaten. The wins also show that Donald Trump's continued trolling about election security, no matter how trivial or tangential it may appear in the middle of a horribly mismanaged pandemic response, must be challenged.
Statewide mail-in voting "doesn't work out well for Republicans," he recently tweeted. It's a claim the Georgia House speaker, Republican David Ralston, recently made as well. "They grab thousands of mail-in ballots and they dump it," Trump said of Democrats from the White House press briefing room last week, without explaining exactly what he meant or offering any evidence.
Perhaps most importantly, Trump is seeking to shift the blame for a possible election defeat in November.
Bold emphasis is mine.

How did the United States the richest country in the world become the worldwide epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, with one person dying of COVID-19 every 47 seconds? We spend the hour with Noam Chomsky, the world-renowned political dissident, linguist and author, discussing this unprecedented moment in history, and its political implications, as Senator Bernie Sanders announces he is suspending his campaign for the presidency. Chomsky also describes how frontline medical workers and progressive organizing are giving him hope.

AMY GOODMAN: Were broadcasting from New York City, the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. The U.S. itself is now the worldwide epicenter, with one person dying of COVID-19 every 47 seconds. Nearly 16,700 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in the United States, with the number of confirmed cases approaching half a million more than Italy, Spain and France combined. Of course, the true rate of infections is far, far higher due to a critical lack of testing. This comes as the Labor Department said Thursday over 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits over the past week, as the pace and scale of U.S. job losses is set to rival the Great Depression.

Cannot copy text, but basically the illustrious asshole Gov. Lee said he wants state open by early May, in accordance with shitstain's desires.
He declined to say whether schools would be closed beyond the current 4/24 date.
Of course, health experts are cautioning against reopening too quickly.
He just doesn't get it - the virus determines when people can resume activities, not shitstain.

Everyone on this super-rich Florida island gets tested for coronavirus even the staff

As Americans struggle to obtain COVID-19 tests, one island in Florida is testing every resident and those who travel to the island for work.
Fisher Island an exclusive enclave of multi-million dollar condos and homes and one of the wealthiest ZIP Codes in the country has purchased thousands of rapid COVID-19 blood test kits from the University of Miami Health System for all of its residents and workers, the Miami Herald reported Monday.
The private island, set along Government Cut and nestled between Miami and Miami Beach and accessible only by boat, worked out a deal with UHealth to make the tests available to the 800 or so families that live there, and all the workers who maintain the property and patrol its streets, the newspaper reported.
So, it isn't a hoax after all?

Two McDonalds workers in Florida are filing a $500 million class action lawsuit against the company, claiming a systemic sexual harassment problem at company-owned stores
The lawsuit was filed Monday in federal court in Illinois, where McDonalds is based. In the complaint, current McDonalds employee Jamelia Fairley and former employee Ashley Reddick say they were repeatedly subjected to sexual harassment and physical assaults at a company-owned McDonalds in Sanford, Florida.
Fairley and Reddick initially filed charges last May with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The commission dismissed the case in January but informed both women they had the right to sue McDonalds within 90 days.
