Occupied regions of Ukraine vote to join Russia in staged referendums

KHARKIV AND ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine, and MOSCOW — Four Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine appeared to vote overwhelmingly in favor of joining the Russian Federation, according to early returns reported by Russian state media. Ukraine and its international partners have dismissed the highly controversial referendums as shams and a violation of international law.
The Russian-run referendum votes took place over five days, from Sept. 23 through Sept. 27, despite international outrage.
The referendums are widely viewed as an initial Kremlin move toward formal Russian annexation of the territories, even as the exact timetable remains unclear.
With around 15% of the vote counted, preliminary results reported Tuesday by Russian state media showed well over 97% voting in favor of the measure in all the regions.

Nato denounces 'referendums' in occupied Ukrainian territories as 'sham' and 'violation of international law'
The Moscow organised votes in four occupied regions in Ukraine on annexation by Russia are a “sham” and “a blatant violation of international law,” NATO’s chief Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday.
Stoltenberg tweeted that he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “and made clear that NATO Allies are unwavering in our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and right to self-defence”.
“The sham referenda held by Russia have no legitimacy and are a blatant violation of international law. These lands are Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said.

Gas from Russia's Nord Stream 2 pipeline leaks into Baltic Sea

BERLIN/COPENHAGEN (Reuters) -Danish authorities on Monday asked ships to steer clear of a five nautical mile radius off the island of Bornholm after a gas leak overnight from the defunct Russian-owned Nord Stream 2 pipeline drained into the Baltic Sea.
The German government said it was in contact with the Danish authorities and working with local law enforcement to find out what caused pressure in the pipeline to plummet suddenly. Denmark's energy ministry declined to comment.
On Monday evening, the operator of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which ran at reduced capacity since mid-June before stopping supplies altogether in August, also disclosed a pressure drop on both lines of the gas pipeline.
"The reasons are being investigated," Nord Stream AG said on its website, without disclosing further information.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, Meloni condemned the war, supported weapons to Ukraine, and the expansion of NATO. She marched in lockstep with with her fellow fascists/Cristianists in Poland, the Law & Justice Party.
The more Putin friendly RW/Popularist parties, the 5 Star Movement, Berlusconi's Forza Italia and the Italian League offered mealy mouthed excuses for doing nothing. Their vote collapsed in 2022, with most of their voters going to Meloni's 'Brothers of Italy'. The mainstream Center Left Democratic Party held its own.

The reason Giorgia Meloni's election is causing such alarm is that her 'Brothers of Italy' party is a descent of the Italian Social Movement (MSI) which was formed after the war by supports of Mussolini. It has kept the same logo, a tricolor torch, and has praised Mussioni on some occasions. Melonoi's win is obvious encouragement to those who would like to revisit pre-WWII fascism in name, if not in foreign policy.
Ms. Meloni is at pains to assert her party’s mainstream credentials. This especially takes the form of a staunchly Atlanticist foreign policy — commitment to the European Union and NATO and firm opposition to Russia and China.
