Britain's post-Brexit choices

Assuming the UK does eventually leave the EU, its next government will need to negotiate new relationships with the rest of the world.

https://www.socialeurope.eu/britains-post-brexit-choices

by Ngaire Woods on 13th November 2019

Huge amounts of time, effort and frustration have gone into negotiating the terms of the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union. And with the UK set to hold a crucial parliamentary election on December 12th, it still is not clear whether, when and how Brexit will happen. But assuming the UK does leave the EU, its next government will need to begin the long, difficult process of negotiating new relationships with the rest of the world. That will involve tough choices, one of the thorniest of which is whether the UK should align its regulations in key economic sectors with those of the EU or the United States. Where, then, is Britain headed?

The prime minister, Boris Johnson, wants the UK to reach a trade and investment agreement with the US after Brexit. After all, America is the UK’s largest single-country trade partner and its biggest source (and destination) of foreign direct investment. In seeking such a deal, however, the UK would have to decide how far it is willing to realign its regulatory regimes with those of the US (as American firms and investors want). Closer alignment with the US would create new barriers to trade with the EU, which is a much larger market for UK exports. Moreover, the prospect of adopting US standards—on drug pricing, the environment, food standards and animal welfare, for example—is already creating a public backlash in Britain.

As the UK prepares for life after Brexit, regulatory tensions with the US and EU could potentially flare up in two other important sectors.

Banking and finance

The first is banking and finance. In 2018, the UK’s financial services sector contributed £132 billion ($170 billion) to the economy, or 6.9 per cent of total output, provided 1.1 million jobs (3.1 per cent of the total) and paid some £29 billion in tax (in the 2017-18 UK tax year). The sector also generated £60 billion worth of exports in 2017 (against £15 billion in imports). But the financial services sector poses huge risks if it is not adequately regulated. The 2007-08 financial crisis reduced UK national output by 7 per cent, wiped out one million jobs, caused wages to fall by 5 per cent below 2007 levels and brought bank lending to a halt. All parts of the UK (and much of the rest of the world) felt the catastrophic impact.

After the crisis, an independent commission made a clear case for regulatory reform to protect the British public (and the public purse) from reckless bank lending. Policy-makers in the EU and the US also accepted the need for robust regulation. Today, however, America and Europe are pursuing sharply divergent approaches. EU regulators continue to strengthen prudential rules and capital requirements (especially for very large banks) and are widening the ambit of regulation to cover every asset and profession in the financial services industry.

'Racist' TYT reporter continues smear campaign against Buttigieg (A must read, this backs up what I

have been saying since spring. The whole Sirota/JD/TYT/DSA/BoBer crowd has been camping down in South Bend for 8 months or so, trying to dig up dirt and smear Pete.)

October 25, 2019

https://orderofthecoif.wordpress.com/2019/10/25/racist-tyt-reporter-continues-smear-campaign-against-buttigieg/

The Young Turks today published the latest in a series of articles about Pete Buttigieg that they’ve characterised as “investigative reporting”. As will be shown in this article, these articles by Jonathan Larsen constitute nothing less than a sustained smear campaign that breaks all the basic rules of good, objective journalism. Mr Larsen consistently relies upon anonymous sources with suspect motivations, and often misleads his readers about the nature of documents on which he purports to rely.

The articles have also consistently pressed the most slanted and unfavourable interpretation against Mr Buttigieg, and relied substantially on innuendo and conspiracy theory dressed up as searching questions. The articles have sought to create an impression that Mr Buttigieg is engaging in racist policies or corrupt conduct, while failing to establish corroborated facts that actually support such an interpretation. This article will also set out Mr Larsen has questions to answer about his own conduct, which has been alleged in open court to include racist bullying, harassment and racial discrimination. Cenk Uygur should explain why a reporter credibly accused of racist conduct is allowed to continue on his staff while the issue remains unresolved.

Secret Tapes

The matter begins in January 2012 when Mr Buttigieg commenced his first term as Mayor of South Bend. Upon taking up a mayoralty, an Indiana mayor will determine who their chief of police shall be. The incumbent is not guaranteed to be appointed to continue under the new mayor. The incumbent chief in South Bend was Chief Darryl Boykins, an African-American police officer who enjoyed the confidence and respect of the community. Mr Buttigieg interviewed three candidates from the South Bend Police Department; Chief Boykins and division chiefs Steve Richmond and Tim Corbett. Mayor Buttigieg decided, based on his performance as chief and his good relations with the community, to reappoint Chief Boykins.

It has been alleged that six days after Mayor Buttigieg took office, on 6th January, 2012, Chief Boykins called division chief Richmond into his office and, “berated him for having been disloyal to him by seeking his job and for being a ‘backstabber'”. Chief Boykins also told Richmond that he had been wiretapping his and other senior officers phone lines, and that “he would fire anyone he determined to be disloyal”. It is also said that on 17th January, Richmond spoke to Karen DePaepe, SBPD Director of Communications, and asked her whether it was true that his line had been tapped. DePaepe responded that the chief requested a line tap “the day he promoted you to division chief”.

Richmond and other officers whose phone lines it transpired had been tapped by DePaepe at the request of the chief since 2010, went to the US Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, a Democrat Mr David Capp (who was incidentally later fired by Donald Trump), to complain about the taps which they interpreted to be illegal breaches of their constitutional 4th amendment rights. The FBI commenced an investigation of Chief Boykins, and Mayor Buttigieg was informed. Prior to this the mayor was unaware of the existence of the tapes. The US Attorney informed the mayor that if Chief Boykins was quietly dispensed with as head of the SBPD, they would agree not to press charges.

WaPo : Second person says he told Rep. Jim Jordan about sexual misconduct at Ohio State

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/11/08/second-person-says-he-told-rep-jim-jordan-about-sexual-misconduct-ohio-state/

A college wrestling referee says he reported sexual misconduct involving a former doctor who’s been accused sexually abusing nearly 300 hundred men over a 17-year period to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), a former assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State. The congressman was dismissive, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday in federal court, and the doctor, Richard Strauss, continued to treat and abuse students at the school.

Ohio State says it’s aware of 1,429 instances of fondling and 47 instances of rape involving Strauss, who committed suicide in 2005. Thursday’s filing marks the 13th lawsuit against the school. Jordan has found himself at the periphery of the controversy because some former wrestlers have said he was aware — or should have been aware — of Strauss’s misconduct. Jordan has denied any knowledge of the abuse, and did so again on Friday.

“Congressman Jordan never saw or heard of any kind of sexual abuse, and if he had he would’ve dealt with it,” Jordan spokesman Ian Fury. “Multiple investigations have confirmed this simple fact.”

The lawsuit comes as Jordan, the top Republican on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, has taken a leading role in the House impeachment inquiry of President Trump as perhaps Trump’s most aggressive defender. Inside numerous closed door interviews conducted over the past six weeks, Jordan and a senior Oversight Committee aide reporting to him led GOP questioning.

Far-right groups threaten to disrupt premiere of Swedish-Georgian movie

https://www.thelocal.se/20191108/far-right-groups-threaten-to-disrupt-premiere-of-swedish-georgian-movie

Set in Georgia, And Then We Danced – Sweden's official Oscar submission in the best international feature film category – is a love story about two male dancers in Georgia's national ballet company. The film is scheduled to premiere in the capital Tbilisi on Friday evening. The drama has won worldwide critical acclaim but was denounced by the Caucasus country's influential Orthodox Church as an "affront to the traditional Georgian values".

"Some far-right groups and the Church have basically condemned the film and are planning to stop people from entering the sold-out screenings," the film's director Levan Akin, a Swede with Georgian roots, wrote on his Facebook page. "These are the dark time we live in," he wrote, adding that it is important to "stand up against these shadowy forces in any way we can". Earlier this week, Sandro Bregadze, former junior minister in the ruling Georgian Dream party's government, said his nationalist Georgian March group will not allow the film to be screened in Tbilisi, calling it a "propaganda of sodomy".

Levan Vasadze, a Georgian businessman with links to Russia's anti-Western and far-right groups, said his supporters will "enter screening rooms in the six cinemas in Tbilisi and turn off the projectors", also vowing to "shove back police if need be". Georgia's interior ministry issued a statement, promising to ensure "the protection of public safety and order, as well as the freedom of self-expression". "We adress everyone: obey the law. Otherwise, police will use their lawful mandate and suppress unlawful acts immediately," the statement said.

Homosexuality is still highly stigmatized in Georgia, a socially conservative Black Sea nation where the immensely influential Orthodox Church has previously clashed with Western-leaning governments over social issues. Critics of the ruling Georgian Dream party have accused the government of giving tacit support to homophobic and nationalist groups which traditionally support the party in elections and have staged protest rallies against pro-Western opposition parties.

New Poll Shows Democratic Candidates Have Been Living in a Fantasy World

http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/11/poll-trump-beats-democrats-swing-state-biden-warren-sanders.html

In 2018, Democratic candidates waded into hostile territory and flipped 40 House districts, many of them moderate or conservative in their makeup. In almost every instance, their formula centered on narrowing their target profile by avoiding controversial positions, and focusing obsessively on Republican weaknesses, primarily Donald Trump’s abuses of power and attempts to eliminate health insurance for millions of Americans. The Democratic presidential field has largely abandoned that model. Working from the premise that the country largely agrees with them on everything, or that agreeing with the majority of voters on issues is not necessary to win, the campaign has proceeded in blissful unawareness of the extremely high chance that Trump will win again.

A new batch of swing state polls from the New York Times ought to deliver a bracing shock to Democrats. The polls find that, in six swing states — Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona — Trump is highly competitive. He trails Joe Biden there by the narrowest of margins, and leads Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Normally, it is a mistake to overreact to the findings of a single poll. In general, an outlier result should only marginally nudge our preexisting understanding of where public opinion stands. This case is different. To see why, you need to understand two interrelated flaws in the 2016 polling. First, they tended to under-sample white voters without college degrees. And this made them especially vulnerable to polling misses in a handful of states with disproportionately large numbers of white non-college voters. The Times found several months ago that Trump might well win 270 Electoral College votes even in the face of a larger national vote defeat than he suffered in 2016.

All this is to say that, if you’ve been relying on national polls for your picture of the race, you’re probably living in la-la land. However broadly unpopular Trump may be, at the moment he is right on the cusp of victory. What about the fact Democrats crushed Trump’s party in the midterms? The new Times polling finds many of those voters are swinging back. Almost two-thirds of the people who supported Trump in 2016, and then a Democrat in the 2018 midterms, plan to vote for Trump again in 2020.
