Democratic Dominance of the Nonwhite Vote Continues to Slip

That’s a Huge Problem for Their Electoral Theory of the Case

https://theliberalpatriot.substack.com/p/democratic-dominance-of-the-nonwhite

By Ruy Teixeira

In 2020, Democrats lost 10 points off of their margin among nonwhite voters (Catalist two party vote). While Biden won anyway, that result raised troubling question about the Democrats’ electoral theory of the case.

Here’s why. The overwhelming proportion of voters in the country are white—72 percent in the last election. A reasonable expectation is that that number will go up a bit to 73 percent in 2022, given standard midterm turnout patterns. Since Democrats tend to lose the overall white vote by solid margins, the Democratic electoral theory of the case is based around carrying the much smaller, 27-28 percent of voters who are nonwhite by far larger margins.

Rapidly declining margins among nonwhites obviously call this strategy into question. It may be objected that Democrats still dominate the nonwhite vote and that nonwhites are growing as a share of voters. Well, there’s dominance and then there’s dominance—a change from overwhelming to merely very strong can make a significant difference. Take 2020. In that election, Democrats’ declining dominance of the nonwhite vote meant that, despite constituting a larger share of the vote, nonwhites actually contributed less to the Democrats’ overall margin than they did in 2016.

Since 2020, the Democratic dominance of nonwhite voters has continued to decline. The latest manifestation of this was the turnout patterns in last Tuesday’s Texas primaries which suggested continuing movement to the GOP among Texas Hispanics. Also recently, there was the surge of Asian voters against the ultra-progressive school board members in San Francisco. And in the 2021 elections we saw significant attrition of Democratic support among both Hispanics and Asians. The signs of this deterioration are also unmistakable in recent polling data. Here are some examples:

Ukraine has shredded the GOP's message

Staging culture-war battles doesn’t work when all eyes are on a real war.

https://newsletters.theatlantic.com/wait-what/621feb91199fdd00213f59bc/cpac-trump-gop-russia-ukraine-invasion/

On Wednesday night eastern time last week, Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. On Thursday morning, the Conservative Political Action Conference kicked off its annual gathering in Orlando, Florida. Against the backdrop of a real war, the culture warriors at CPAC (which I spent hours watching on the CPAC website) looked even pettier than usual. Republicans were serving up their usual list of grievances while brave Ukrainians were taking up arms to defend their country from Vladimir Putin. Donald Trump, a keynote speaker, is, of course, an unabashed Putin fanboy. Russian troops were preparing to close in on Kyiv as Texas Senator Ted Cruz was rolling into Orlando to ask the CPAC audience to subscribe to his podcast. More than anything, the culture warriors wanted to promote their own brands.

It certainly says something that the competing conference—the America First Political Action Conference, held at the Orlando World Center Marriott—was for white nationalists. Then there was the CPAC audience’s bewilderment over how to respond to Putin attacking Ukraine. The official straw poll of 2,574 attendees revealed that 62 percent believe that “Joe Biden’s incompetence” is the “greatest threat to America’s safety and national security,” while 3 percent view Russia as a threat. Could this have anything to do with Trump and Putin complimenting each other for years?

The more mainstream—but still terrible!—Republicans who gave speeches resorted to tired culture-war-mongering. Given an unenviable early-Friday-morning slot, perpetually diminished Florida Senator Marco Rubio rotely complained about “Marxism.” So did Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who told the crowd, “Wokeism is a form of cultural Marxism.” Ted Cruz, in a conversation with former Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, said, “Putin is less dangerous than China. Putin is basically a KGB thug … In the long term, I believe China is our single greatest geopolitical adversary for the next century.” Maybe so, but why downplay Putin’s threat at this moment in history?

European countries have opened their doors to Ukrainian refugees, but CPAC speakers railed against immigrants. Lukasz Kmita, the head of Poland’s Malopolska region, reportedly said that there would be “no limits” on the number of refugees they would take. DeSantis told the crowd, “If Biden is dumping illegal aliens into Florida from the southern border, I’m rerouting them to Delaware.” Dehumanizing immigrants was a winning message for the GOP in the Trump years. Does it still play when American television is filled with images of Europeans welcoming Ukrainians?

Gov. Larry Hogan beats impeachment attempt by Trump-aligned Republican

The governor’s spokesman said the lawmaker who launched the effort must now go ‘back to the QAnon Ouija board.’

https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/03/03/larry-hogan-beats-impeachment/

In less than five minutes, Maryland lawmakers on Thursday unanimously rejected impeaching Gov. Larry Hogan. A fellow Republican and political opponent of Hogan had accused the governor of wide-ranging misdeeds including: overstepping his authority with pandemic restrictions, inappropriately welcoming refugees, denying access to controversial covid-19 treatments and flouting state law by using disappearing-message apps.

Del. Daniel L. Cox (R-Frederick), a Donald Trump-aligned candidate for governor, had four minutes to make his case. Without debate, the House Rules and Executive Nominations Committee summarily dismissed it.

“It is a political issue, not a legal issue worthy of impeachment and that extraordinary remedy under our system,” House Minority Leader Jason C. Buckel (R-Allegany) said as he moved to vote down the charges.

“I do not feel that it meets the standards of impeachment that would exist under Maryland law, and it would be unprecedented under the circumstances to proceed at this time,” he said. The committee, which is dominated by leading Democrats who do not pull punches when criticizing the governor, rejected the charges without further discussion.

How Sweden has responded to Putin's war in Ukraine so far

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, Swedish businesses and cities, alongside the Swedish government, have responded with a range of sanctions on Russia. See the key points here.

Businesses:

February 28th: Scania vehicle manufacturers announce that they paused delivery of vehicles and reserve parts to Russia “last week”
February 28th: Volvo truck makers (a separate entity from Volvo cars) halt production at its Russian factory and stop sales in Russia
February 28th: Volvo cars stop all sales of new cars in Russia
February 28th: Ericsson suspend deliveries to Russia
March 2nd: H&M announce that it is halting sales in Russia
March 2nd: Spotify announce that it is closing its Russian office and removing Russian state-sponsored content from its platform
March 3rd: IKEA suspend activities in Russia and Belarus

Cities:

February 27th: Kalmar municipality, southern Sweden, pauses partnership with twin city Kaliningrad, Russian exclave
February 28th: Borgholm municipality on the Swedish island of Öland pauses twin city agreement with Zelenogradsk, also situated in Kaliningrad
March 1st: Karlskoga municipality, central Sweden, end twin city agreement with the Russian city of Ivangorod
March 3rd: city of Malmö ends anti-HIV/AIDS collaboration with Kaliningrad
A number of other municipalities such as Lycksele in northern Sweden and Norrtälje north of Stockholm have also ended their collaborations with Russian cities.

Universities:

In a press conference on March 2nd held alongside the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions (SUHF) and the Swedish Research Council, Education Minister Anna Ekström called for Swedish universities and higher education institutions to break all contact and collaboration with state-run institutions in Russia and Belarus. “We should not have research and education collaborations which support the Russian administration,” Ekström said. She did, however, underline that individual Russian researchers should not be equated with the Russian state. “In many education and research collaborations, there are individual contacts between researchers in Sweden, Russia and Belarus. Many in Russia and Belarus openly criticise the Russian administration’s actions, putting their lives in danger. Therefore, it is important that Russian and Belarusian researchers are not automatically equated with state institutions,” she said.

Government support:

March 1st: The government agree to send 100 million kronor to Ukraine
February 28th: The government agree to send military supplies to Ukraine, including anti-tank weapons and protective supplies
March 1st: The government agree to send a further 500 million kronor to Ukraine
March 2nd: The government agree to send medical supplies to Ukraine including face masks, ventilators, hand sanitiser and IV drips

Solidarity brings hope: why Swedish support matters for us Ukrainians

Karina Shyrokykh, spokesperson for the Nordic Ukraine forum, describes the surreal seven days since Russia invaded Ukraine. The solidarity people in Sweden and elsewhere have shown is a sign, she believes, of brighter times ahead.

https://www.thelocal.se/20220302/why-every-bit-of-support-we-can-get-from-sweden-matters-for-us-ukrainians/

Karina Shyrokykh, spokesperson for the Nordic Ukraine forum, speaks at a demonstration in Stockholm on Tuesday.

When I went to bed on February 23, I was happy to have managed to submit a scientific paper for peer review before midnight. As I drifted off, I worried I could have formulated a few of the sentences differently. Little did I know that six hours later, I would wake to learn that Russia had launched a full-scale war on Ukraine.

I could not believe what I was reading and seeing on the news. Everything seemed so surreal. My immediate thoughts were with my family back in Ukraine. I felt disoriented and terrified. And it was not only me, every Ukrainian that I have spoken to said they woke that morning with the same feelings.

Within two hours, the Nordic Ukraine Forum, an NGO created to develop Ukraine-Sweden relations, arranged a protest next to the Russian Embassy in Sweden. It was painful to witness: people were not hiding their emotions, many cried. They were unsure whether their families were safe and felt desperate at not being able to help their loved ones.

But also, everyone was terrified by the fact that Ukraine’s very existence was being fundamentally threatened. You could also tell that the journalists who came to report from the protest were emotional, with some barely holding back tears. It was a very gloomy morning.

Herschel Walker's Son Sells 'All-American' Swag Made in India

Aspiring right-wing influencer Christian Walker is selling plenty of Herschel Walker campaign apparel. Unfortunately for his dad, the sales don’t appear to go to the campaign.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/hershel-walkers-son-christian-walker-sells-all-american-swag-made-in-india

Conservative social media personality Christian Walker—the adult son of football star turned Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker—has objected to being called a grifter.

https://twitter.com/ChristianWalk1r/status/1343763767545507840
But at the ripe old age of 22, Christian Walker has found a way to use foreign-made political swag to profit off his father’s Senate campaign.

For months, Christian, an aspiring right-wing influencer and self-described “free-speech radicalist,” has been slinging campaign-themed merch through a dedicated “Herschel ’22” page on his Official Christian Walker website.

The products include T-shirts and hoodies adorned with campaign rallying cries, including “Herschel Walker ’22: All American”—a nod to his father’s legendary football prowess—along with “Touchdown in the Senate — #herschelforsenate” and “I’m running with Herschel.” (T-shirts run $20 and $29.99; hoodies command $49.99.)

Stay Calm, America

Putin’s violence may still get worse. But Americans shouldn’t root for a dangerous escalation of hostilities.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/03/stay-calm-and-dont-advocate-war-against-putin/624169/

A few days ago, I was watching footage of Ukrainian mothers, panicked and crying, trying to evacuate their children from a beautiful city that a paranoid dictator has now turned into a war zone. I looked over at my wife, sitting a few feet away from me, and saw the tears welling in her eyes. I felt helpless. And for once, I was at a loss for words.

Night after night I find myself staring at the television, almost paralyzed with anger and grief. Russian President Vladimir Putin, after a catastrophic strategic miscalculation, is now embroiled in perhaps the greatest military blunder in modern European history. In his desperation, he is resorting to the classic Russian military playbook of indiscriminate and massive violence. His unprovoked war of aggression is rapidly escalating into war crimes.

It’s going to get worse. The images and sounds from these first few days are a mere prologue to what will come once Putin realizes that he is on track to lose this war, even if he somehow “wins” by flattening entire cities.

In my rage, I want someone somewhere to do something. I have taught military and national-security affairs for more than a quarter century, and I know what will happen when a 40-mile column of men and weapons encircles a city of outgunned defenders. I want all the might of the civilized world—a world of which Putin is no longer a part—to obliterate the invading forces and save the people of Ukraine.
