Jeremy Corbyn banned from standing as Labour candidate at the next election, Keir Starmer announces

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will not be allowed to stand for Labour at the next election.

https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/jeremy-corbyn-banned-standing-next-elections-keir-starmer/

Sir Keir Starmer said the MP, who was already kicked out of the party, will not stand under his party's banner. It comes as Sir Keir tries to draw a line under the party's past, when it became embroiled in a series of anti-semitism controversies under the left-wing former leader, who has been suspended from the party for years.

"Jeremy Corbyn will not stand for Labour at the next general election," his successor as leader said. "What I said about the party changing, I meant, and we are not going back."

It comes after the Equality and Human Rights Commission said it was no longer monitoring the party over its handling of anti-semitism. Previously, the watchdog accused the party of "serious failings" under Mr Corbyn's leadership.

But while he said anti-semitism was "absolutely abhorrent" in 2020, he went on to say: "The scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media."

'I'm not announcing anything': Dianne Feinstein an hour after announcing she won't seek re-election

https://www.rawstory.com/feinstein-annoucement/

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) will not seek re-election in 2024 after more than 30 years in the U.S. Senate. The 89-year-old senator and former San Francisco mayor had served in the Senate since 1992, and she had been considered Walter Mondale's running mate in 1984 and asked by then-president Bill Clinton to run for California governor, but in recent years had been dogged by questions about her health.

"I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends," Feinstein said in a statement sent from her U.S. Senate office and posted to her official website.

But during a brief interview Tuesday afternoon with Raw Story on Capitol Hill, Feinstein said she has not made an announcement about retiring from the Senate. "Oh, no, I'm not announcing anything. I will one day," Feinstein told Raw Story, about an hour after her office released the statement on her decision not to seek re-election. Feinstein's office could not immediately be reached for comment. Feinstein this year has twice changed the timeline of her decision of whether to seek re-election.

In January, Feinstein told Raw Story that she wouldn't make her decision until 2024 — potentially a year away. Then, she backtracked, saying she'd announce sometime this spring. Two Democratic lawmakers, Reps. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter, have already announced they will run for Feinstein's seat next year.

Rosa's Thai Founder On How She Cooks At Home

The Modern House: A weekly newsletter of home and interior inspiration, delivered to your inbox: subscribe here

“This is where I belong,” says Saiphin Moore, standing in the stainless-steel kitchen of her home in Wapping, east London. From her open-plan apartment, where she lives with her family, Saiphin has spectacular views of the Thames and London, her hometown since the chef came to the capital in 2006 and two years later launched the restaurant, Rosa’s Thai. Today there are 38 outposts across London and the UK (she also runs Lao Café in Covent Garden). Rosa’s might have grown in size but its ethos remains very much the same as when it started: to serve tasty Thai food inspired by her family recipes. And there’s not one dish that holds a closer place to her heart than noodle soup, which she whips up in our latest film.

Saiphin’s recipe for chicken noodle soup:

Serves 2-3

400g chicken thigh
100g carrot, thinly sliced
50g daikon (Chinese white radish or mooli), peeled and cut into 2½cm pieces
2 coriander roots (or 10 fresh coriander stalks), chopped
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1tsp sugar
1tbsp light soy sauce, plus more to serve
60g dried flat rice noodles
100g bean sprouts
100g julienned white cabbage

Fill a large saucepan three-quarters full with water and heat until simmering. Add the chicken and once cooked, set it aside. Then add the carrot, daikon, coriander roots (or stalks) and garlic. Stir in the sugar and light soy sauce and simmer over a very low heat for about 30 minutes, until the vegetables are soft and tender. Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions, drain and set aside. Blanch the bean sprouts and cabbage together in boiling water for 30 seconds, then drain and place in a serving bowl along with the cooked chicken. Pour over the soup and to serve, sprinkle over the pickled green cabbage, chopped coriander leaves, spring onion and crispy fried garlic. Finish with a dusting of white pepper and serve with small bowls of light soy sauce, dried chilli flakes and sliced chillies in rice vinegar, so everyone can season the dish according to taste.

Diversity among top Senate staffers is abysmal

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/02/12/senate-staffers-racial-diversity/

https://archive.is/UOjDO

This year’s Super Bowl should shine a bright spotlight on the issue of diversity. Yes, two Black quarterbacks have led their teams to the championship game, a sign of progress. But the league continues to struggle with its dismal record of hiring Black head coaches. The problem goes far beyond football. Lack of diversity in leadership roles is common in workplaces across the country, including, arguably, one of the most important locations: the U.S. Senate.

Decades ago, I had the privilege of working in two different offices in the Senate. There, I saw up close a near complete absence of people in senior staff roles who looked like me. And nothing has changed. Let’s look at some numbers: Of the 100 U.S. senators, 88 are White, each with a chief of staff to lead their teams of 50 to 70 public servants. In this “world’s most deliberative body,” there is only one Black chief of staff, four Black legislative directors and one Black communications director.

On the Senate committees where legislation takes shape, there are zero Black people in top committee staff director positions. Following the recent midterm elections, newly elected senators are continuing this poor trend, with only 5.9 percent of their top staff positions (chief of staff, legislative director, communications director) held by people of color.

These staffers are crucial to the Senate’s work. Chiefs of staff hire and manage each office’s workers, decide their senators’ schedules, and serve as the primary interface between the staffs and their bosses. Legislative directors determine their senators’ issue priorities, recommend how they vote, serve as their principal policy ambassadors to other offices and outside interests, draft legislation and prepare for floor debates. Staff directors run committees for the chairs and schedule proceedings and votes on legislation, move nominees through the confirmation process, help choose questions to ask witnesses, and negotiate deals on legislation as they move from the committee to the Senate floor.

Finland plans parliamentary vote on Nato despite Sweden block

Finland's parliament looks set to push ahead with a vote on Nato membership before the country's April election, despite fears that this could increase the risk of the country joining the alliance without Sweden.

https://www.thelocal.se/20230210/finland-plans-parliamentary-vote-on-nato-despite-sweden-block/

According to Finland’s state broadcaster Yle, eight of the country’s nine parliamentary parties now back are agreed on holding a vote to accept Nato membership before election day on April 2nd. According to the broadcaster, the speaker of parliament Matti Vanhanen is meeting representatives of the parties on Friday to discuss when the vote should best be held.

Petteri Orpo, chairman of the National Coalition Party, said in a press release on Friday that he believed the vote should be held as early as this month. “There are good reasons why this parliament should vote to accept Nato membership in February, so that the process on the part of Finland can continue as smoothly as possible after the election,” he wrote.

The parties say that their preference remains for Finland to join Nato at the same time as Sweden, but the Left Alliance party warned that rushing through a parliamentary vote risked creating a situation where Finland was forced to join without Sweden. “It would be smart to keep the timetable in the parliament’s hands,” said Jussi Saramo, the party’s representative in the parliament’s foreign affairs committee. “Now we are giving Turkey the opportunity to continue with its divide-and-rule tactics.

The party’s chair, Li Andersson, said her party was worried Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, would find a way to exploit the early parliamentary vote. “That’s the worry that we have, that the timetable for the decision is placed in the hands of others. But we will follow the opinion of the majority.”

Conservatives Are Pissed at Chick-fil-A's 'Woke' Sandwich

The conservative chicken chain has angered its base. And all it took was adding a cruciferous vegetable to the menu.

https://gizmodo.com/conservative-controversy-chick-fil-a-cauliflower-sandwi-1850100961

If you thought last month’s Twitter meltdown over a non-existent gas stove ban would be the strangest part of the 2023 culture wars… you are sadly wrong. Many tweeters are now angry at the beloved Christian conservative chicken chain Chick-fil-A for testing out a “plant-forward” alternative product. This Thursday, the chain unveiled a breaded cauliflower sandwich. Starting on Monday, February 13, Chick-fil-A will test the new menu item in three markets; Denver, Charleston, S.C., and North Carolina’s Greensboro-Triad region.

“Cauliflower is the hero of our new sandwich, and it was inspired by our original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich,” Leslie Neslage, the director of menu and packaging at Chick-fil-A said in a statement. “Guests told us they wanted to add more vegetables into their diets, and they wanted a plant-forward entrée that tasted uniquely Chick-fil-A. Our new sandwich is made with the highest quality ingredients and whole vegetables, and we hope it offers customers another reason to dine at Chick-fil-A.”

But a plant-based menu item (much like an induction stove) is a little too woke for some of the chain’s loyal customers The Tweet announcing the new menu item went live on Thursday. As of today the tweet has garnered about 3.5 million views and the comments have been disabled. The post was also rationed with more than 2,000 quote tweets, and about 1,400 likes. The press release announcing the new menu item linked to the tweet opens up a “site can’t be reached” page. The company’s press-room section is also unavailable at the moment.

The quote tweets were a barrage of people angry at the company for messing around with their Jesus Chicken. Maybe the backlash has been because anything deemed eco-friendly is too “woke.” Or because the cauliflower sandwich has sparked memories of Fox News warning Americans that Sleepy Joe was coming for their hamburgers. But whatever the reason, many tweeters are not happy. Some of these tweets seem like they’re parodies of tweets from people who are actually upset about the vegetable addition to the Chick-fil-A menu. And some seem genuine. Here are some highlights:
