Texas Supreme Court rejects top Republicans' request to shorten early voting period
In its ruling, the state's top court said early voting can begin on Oct. 13, the date set by Republican Governor Greg Abbott in a July proclamation. Abbott said an extra week of early voting was needed because of complications posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
Several top Republicans in Texas last month asked the state's highest court to knock down Abbott's proclamation and set the beginning of early voting as Oct. 19, the original date it was scheduled to begin. They argued the early voting violated the Texas constitution.

Trump fails to block tax return subpoena from Manhattan district attorney
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Wednesday rejected Donald Trump's effort to block Manhattan's district attorney from obtaining eight years of his tax returns for a criminal probe into the U.S. president and his businesses.
In a 3-0 decision, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan rejected Trump's accusations that a subpoena from Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance was overly broad, or issued in bad faith to harass him.
The court also said enforcement of the subpoena could be stayed, as agreed to by the parties, should Trump appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Supreme Court turns away Republican appeal on ranked voting
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday turned away a last-ditch effort by the Maine Republican Party to stop ranked choice voting from being used for the first time in the state's presidential contest.
Justice Stephen Breyer rejected the request for the high court to intervene after the GOP sought to delay ranked voting in this Novembers presidential election until state voters had the final say through a Peoples Veto referendum.

In Miami-Dade mayoral race, COVID is the top worry and a Democrat is ahead, poll says
The two candidates for Miami-Dade mayor enjoy lopsided support from their political parties, and thats pushed Democrat Daniella Levine Cava into a lead over Republican Esteban Steve Bovo Jr. in the officially non-partisan race between the county commissioners.
Levine Cava leads Bovo by 10 points in the new poll for the Miami Herald by Bendixen & Amandi International, 45% to 35%.
With mail-in balloting underway in a county where Democrats outnumber Republicans, the poll casts Bovo as the underdog in a race to be the countys mayor after term-limited Carlos Gimenez prepares to leave office after nine years.

A blue wave of Democrats come November may be good for economy: Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs thinks a blue wave of Democrats meaning full control of government via the presidency (Joe Biden), Senate and House come November could be good for the U.S. economy.
All else equal, such a blue wave would likely prompt us to upgrade our forecasts. The reason is that it would sharply raise the probability of a fiscal stimulus package of at least $2 trillion shortly after the presidential inauguration on January 20, followed by longer-term spending increases on infrastructure, climate, health care and education that would at least match the likely longer-term tax increases on corporations and upper-income earners, wrote Goldman Sachs economist Jan Hatzius in a new note to clients on Monday.

High court won't take up ex-Kentucky clerk Kim Davis' case
The high court said Monday it would not take the case involving Kim Davis, the former clerk of Rowan County, and two same-sex couples who had sued her. Soon after the 2015 Supreme Court decision in which same-sex couples won the right to marry nationwide, Davis, a Christian who has a religious objection to same-sex marriage, stopped issuing all marriage licenses.
That led to lawsuits against her, and a judge ordered Davis to issue the licenses. She spent five days in jail after refusing.
Davis had argued that a legal doctrine called qualified immunity protected her from being sued for damages by couples David Ermold and David Moore as well as James Yates and Will Smith. Their case will now move forward.

This has been on my mind all day. I watched a video on a gun control debate this morning
Most gun proponents seem to push the argument that gun-controls laws don't work therefore they shouldn't exist; people need to defend themselves; blah blah blah.
Basically, all I wanted to say is that I'm tired of the GOP argument that gun control laws don't work therefore we should do absolutely nothing and not try anything.
