AM Joy: "Rev. Al Sharpton recently spoke to potential 2020 presidential hopefuls..."

While many people are not considering the 2020 presidential elections yet, the candidates are certainly positioning themselves to challenge for the Democratic nomination.

I hope people see the process and decide to make an effort to get to know the candidates early.

With so many candidates running, you might decide to commit to get on-board with a campaign early and see if you can help your first-choice candidate win.

Pelosi rejects litmus test on abortion

"...Pelosi eluded to her recent backing of Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D), a seven-term abortion opponent in Illinois, who survived a tough primary contest last month from a liberal challenger who made reproductive rights central to her campaign.

“I supported him. I took heat for it. He’s pro-life,” Pelosi said. “But we will have a pro-choice gavel when we win the Congress. We need to have at least 218 votes to achieve that. ..."...

I hope Democratic voters are listening to the wisdom of Nancy Pelosi. She knows what is needed to get Democrats back into power.

Who are the Democrats for president in 2020?

When potential candidates are trying to build a base and test the waters before making an official announcement to run, they tend to do a few things that are indicators of their intentions.

- Often, they write a book. This helps get their name out, gets them an income stream, and shows a bit of what they want to stand for.

- They start showing up at events in Iowa and New Hampshire.

- They get involved with raising money for other candidates hoping to receive help in turn when they run.

- They get even more careful how and when they vote for legislation.

With the candidates who are expected run, (Joe Biden, Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, for example), we can see the pattern already taking place. I think these four are working to get into position to make serious runs.

Who else is preparing to run?
Edited to add; Chris Murphy, Deval Patrick, Eric Holder, Sherrod Brown, and Elizabeth Warren, (thanks, Garrett78)

Also, Terry McAuliffe, (Thanks VA Lefty)

Also, Julian Castro, Ex-Obama housing secretary. https://www.apnews.com/9f60ffbe39ac49a0bf219710adcd69f4

Who are the lesser known candidates who are showing signs of planning to run?

Edited to add; Maryland Congressman John Delaney, (thanks, Algernon Moncrieff) https://www.democraticunderground.com/11001961

Also; Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, https://www.cbsnews.com/news/la-mayor-eric-garcetti-considers-2020-run/ is said to be exploring a run.

Edited to add; Pete Buttigieg, who is the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana. (Thanks, stevenleser)

Also, Representative Luis Gutierrez from Chicago, (thanks, lunamagica)

15 so far and still counting.

This was the event that made me wonder just how many and which Democrats are looking to run in 2020;

"Clinton to fundraise alongside possible 2020 contenders"

This article suggests there may be as many as 40 Democrats who stand up to run in 2020:

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/01/01/democrats-obscure-candidates-trump-312215

"...Eyeing a historically unpopular commander in chief, a national party devoid of an obvious front-runner, and increasingly accessible online tools providing a semi-reliable source of funding, Democrats find that the barriers to entering the presidential conversation are lower than ever. And each new entry begets others eager to be in the mix or at least raise their profile — however slim their chances of winning the nomination might be.

Indeed, the swift expansion of the "Why-not-me caucus" shows no signs of slowing. And it's ballooning the party’s roster of potential candidates, which is stretching past 40 wannabes — including a dozen-plus senators, a half-dozen governors, seven or so House members, and 10 or more former lawmakers of all stripes...."...

How do they handle televised debates if there are 20 or more candidates who commit to run? There will be lots of controversy about who should get to be on the stage and how much time they are allowed to speak. We saw the controversy happen when there were so many republican'ts running in 2016. Be prepared to see it happen again.

The early campaigns in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and South Carolina might well become crazy with so many candidates. The fifth primary, in California is going to shake out all but the best known and best financed candidates.

With so many delegates to be won in California, whoever wins there will have a huge advantage over everyone else.

With only one nominee to be chosen, many supporters are going to have to accept their first choice won't be the nominee. We need everyone to get behind the eventual winner and put a Democrat in the White House.

Remember this bit of history?

Hillary speaking about the "vast right-wing conspiracy".

Here is an alert folks; the "vast right wing conspiracy", "VRWC", is already active and going after every Democrat across the country.

They have already started in on Cory Booker https://corybooker.com, Kirsten Gillibrand https://kirstengillibrand.com, Kamala Harris https://splash.kamalaharris.org, and all the rest. Some of the VRWC is active here on DU trying to sow seeds of discontent and doubt about our candidates.

There are a couple of facts Democrats need to understand; none of our candidates are going to be perfect, and; any of our candidates are going to be a far better choice than any republican't.

Don't get suckered into thinking you are going to get a perfect candidate who agrees with everything you want. You might wind up with Trump for a second term.

"Trump's next $100 billion tariff dilemma: hit Wal-Mart or Apple Store?"

republican'ts think government should be run like business, so they elect a guy when goes bankrupt because he can't find oil in Texas and then they elect a guy who goes bankrupt with a casino in New Jersey.

"Shea Patterson details scope of Ole Miss deception in lengthy letter to Michigan"

"In a detailed filing regarding his transfer case, former Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson tells Michigan officials he was lied to by former Rebels coach Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss officials repeatedly over a 20-month period in an attempt to keep him on campus and discredit both media and the NCAA, CBS Sports has learned...."

"...Jay BilAS Chips in:

“I’m probably more on the philosophical side,” Bilas said. “As you know, the NCAA falls all over themselves to say athletes are students first and they happen to be athletes. They are not employees. If that’s true, then there should be no restriction to where they go and receive aide immediately. Any transfer restrictions are equipped with what essentially is a non-compete element in a contract..."...

The question I have; Is the NCAA going to stand by a policy of supporting coaches and schools who clearly lie to get recruits to come to their schools?

If lying is accepted by the NCAA, they need to be sued out of existence.

"Tennessee Republicans Punish Memphis For Removing Confederate Statues"

"Tennessee’s Republican-controlled House on Tuesday retaliated against Memphis for removing two Confederate monuments by withholding $250,000 previously earmarked for the city’s 2019 bicentennial celebration.

Democrats in the House condemned the move, which came in the form of a last-minute amendment to an appropriations bill and triggered a heated debate. State Rep. Antonio Parkinson (D) said the amendment was the most “vile, racist” measure he had seen, while state Rep. Raumesh Akbari (D) called it “un-Christian.”

“The amendment and the explanation is hateful,” Akbari said before the vote.

But Republicans were not moved, and the amendment passed with a strong majority. In a largely party-line vote, only five Republicans joined 22 Democrats in opposing the measure...."

"The political system is rigged. The fight to fix it is now."

"We’re feeling it too. That feeling that our political system is unfair, and our votes don’t count the way they should. The gerrymandering of congressional and legislative districts locks in a Republican majority and locks out the voters. We have a plan to make the system fair and get democracy working again—and we need your help to do it."...

..."During the last redistricting process in 2011, Republicans had trifecta control in 19 states which gave them complete power over the drawing of 213 congressional districts. The NDRC is committed to changing that and making sure Democrats have a seat at the table in the 2021 redistricting process.

This is a critical election year for redistricting because it is the first cycle where the officials elected will serve during the redistricting process in 2021. NDRC is targeting 12 states during the 2018 election cycle, including 9 gubernatorial races, 20 legislative chambers, 2 ballot initiatives, and 2 down-ballot races. There are 7 additional states on our Watch List."...
