New data breach may have exposed personal information of almost every American adult
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/a-new-data-breach-may-have-exposed-personal-information-of-almost-every-american-adult-2018-06-27?mod=ampfoot_mostpopJune 28, 2018
A little-known Florida company may have exposed the personal data of nearly every American adult, according to a new report.
Exactis data leak reportedly contained detailed information on 230 million consumers
Wired reported Wednesday that Exactis, a Palm Coast, Fla.-based marketing and data-aggregation company, had exposed a database containing almost 2 terabytes of data, containing nearly 340 million individual records, on a public server.
That included records of 230 million consumers and 110 million businesses.
While the database apparently does not include credit-card numbers or Social Security numbers, it does include phone numbers, email and postal addresses as well as more than 400 personal characteristics, such as whether a person is a smoker, if they own a dog or cat, their religion and a multitude of personal interests.
Even though no financial information was included, the breadth of personal data could make it possible to profile individuals or help scammers steal identities.
Troia told Wired that he was easily able to access the database on the internet, and in theory, plenty of other people could have too. He said he warned Exactis and the FBI about the vulnerability, and the data is no longer publicly accessible.
On its website, Exactis said it maintained 3.5 billion consumer, business and digital records, including demographic, geographic, firmographic, lifestyle, interests, CPG, automotive, and behavioral data. The company said it has data on 218 million individuals and 110 million U.S. households.
There are about 325 million residents in the U.S., with about 244 million adults and 126 million households, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Exactis did not immediately respond when asked to confirm the breach.
While technically not a breach, Facebook Inc. FB, +0.06% said in March that most of its 2 billion users had their personal data improperly shared without their permission, including about 87 million profiles that were scraped by Cambridge Analytica.
Exactis 'conveniently' left the window open .
We've seen this 'convenient' data theft before.

THIS WILL PISS YOU OFF

When a group of about 40 players first tested out a live game called the Machine Learning President at a private event in San Francisco this February, they were unaware that the game would end up memorialized in the pages of The New Yorker.
But during a ski vacation in March, the Republican mega-donor Rebekah Mercer gathered her friends together to play several rounds of the game, which pits special interest groups, political candidates, and activist organizations against each other in a simulated presidential election, aided by cash and artificial intelligence.
A lawyer for Mercer told The New Yorker that she owned a copy of the Machine Learning President but had not created it and that it did not reflect her familys views.
Its not hard to draw comparisons between the rules of the game, with its reliance on big cash and tech capabilities, and the actions of the Mercer-backed Cambridge Analytica during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
But, as Mercers lawyer stated, she had nothing to do with creating the gamein fact, it was conceptualized by one of her vocal critics.
"Brett Horvath and Berit Anderson are the co-founders of Scout AI and the creators of the Machine Learning President."
In 2017, the pair published a scathing critique of Cambridge Analytica, the now-shuttered political consultancy that misused the data of tens of millions of Facebook users and sat at the center of the social networks largest scandal in years.
By leveraging automated emotional manipulation alongside swarms of bots, Facebook dark posts, A/B testing, and fake news networks, a company called Cambridge Analytica has activated an invisible machine that preys on the personalities of individual voters to create large shifts in public opinion, the duo wrote.
That invisible machineand the lack of preparedness for it in the 2016 electionprovided inspiration for the Machine Learning President.

https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2018/06/20/company-runs-immigration-detention-centers-top-donor-two-texas-congressmenCompany that runs immigration detention centers is top donor for three Texas congressmen
WASHINGTON -- One of the countrys largest operators of private immigration detention facilities has made significant contributions to several Texas members of Congress.
The GEO Groups PAC and executives have given $32,900 to Houston Republican Rep. John Culbersons campaign this election cycle, according to Federal Election Commission documents and OpenSecrets.org. GEO is Culberson's largest donor.
In Texas, GEO operates detention centers for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Karnes City, Laredo, Pearsall and Conroe.
Culberson is facing a tough re-election race against Democrat Lizzie Fletcher.
The race has been rated a toss up by nonpartisan analyst Cook Political Report.
Culberson received the most funding from GEO out of Texas members of Congress, but GEO is also the top donor this cycle for U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, who received $32,400, and Round Rock Republican Rep. John Carter, who received $31,600.
Both Culberson and Cuellar serve on the House Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee, which funds private immigration detention centers. Culberson is also the chairman of and Carter serves on the House Appropriations subcommittee on commerce, justice and science, which oversees funding for private prisons.

Hundreds Pack LaGuardia Airport To Support Children Torn From Families At Border
https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1009648832202919936
The protesters came after an advocacy group reported seeing migrant kids arriving at the New York airport.
Crowds of protesters filled a New York City airport where migrant children who had been separated from their families along the U.S.-Mexico border were reported to be arriving late Wednesday night, carrying their few belongings with them.
The emotional demonstration at LaGuardia Airport in Queens ignited shortly after workers with the immigrant advocacy group Make the Road New York reported seeing several children deplaning around 10 p.m.
SNIP
Within minutes I saw a group of about four kids that were clearly being escorted out. They were all very small, he said, estimating the children to be between the ages of 4 and 10.
Barrientos said he had seen other children getting off flights and they enthusiastically stretched their legs and released pent-up energy. These four kids behaved differently.
They looked very scared, they looked very numb. They were all carrying little plastic bags with the few belongings that they had, he said. It just looked like it had maybe a piece of underwear, a T-shirt, a toothbrush ― it was that small of a bag.
