Liberal Redneck Is Worried About The Democratic Primaries and We Should Be Too

This is the biggest issue confronting us, not healthcare, not the economy — Republican cohesiveness vs. Democratic cat herding. The Republicans derive their power from acting in concert, to the point of absurdity. Simply put, they don’t care what kind of a scumbag misanthrope racist a given candidate may be, if s/he has an “R” after his/her name, they stick behind their candidate. “They walk the line, man, in a way that we just don’t,” says the Redneck.

While they’re walking the line, Democrats are busy weeding out impurities. We are known for our purity. And if we don’t watch out, we’re going to purify ourselves to extinction.

Liberal Redneck makes the salient point that whomever we vote for for our ticket, we know who’s going to be on theirs, and that is nothing short of a set up for political armageddon take two.

At our worst, Democrats are like a herd of cats. But at our best, when we actually unite, we are like a pride of lions. We’re majestic. We rock the world.

Seamus Hughes of the George Washington Program on Extremism tweeted Wednesday that a U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant was arrested on drugs and weapons charges. He noted that it seemed like an everyday event until court documents were published.

Christopher Paul Hasson was reportedly in contact with white supremacists and was developing a “hit list” of liberal senators he was aiming to attack.

We don't live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do

We do not all have the same advantages in life.

We do not all get the same parents. Some of us are lucky, we get parents who love us, nurture us, and invest their time and energy in making sure we are the best people we can possibly be. Others are not so lucky. They get parents who must work two or three jobs to put food on the table, and don’t have time to check the homework. Or who just don’t know that they should care. Some babies have babies, and they don’t know how to love and nurture in the most appropriate way. Children growing up in those circumstances don’t necessarily learn how to love, how to strive, how to learn. We do not live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do!

We do not all get the same education. Some of us are lucky. We get the education we all deserve. An education that prepares us for the big bad adult world, allowing us to choose a path to success, monetary reward and a fulfilling of our ambitions. Others are not so lucky. Sub-standard education, or a lack of grounding that does not allow an appreciation of the importance of a good education when making life choices. Some of us get to go to a good university, choosing an academic pathway and discipline that will lead to success. Others are not so lucky. For some an academic route is wholly inappropriate and setting them up to fail. For others from lower income families the level of debt accrued at University is a multiple of the family income that they are unable to comprehend. And anyway, they need to earn a living. Help put food on the table. A minimum wage is better than no wage, or huge debts, after all. We do not live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do!

We do not all have the same mindset. Some of us grew up in a positive environment in which we were encouraged to achieve. Told how we could reach for the stars and maybe even catch a few. We were taught the value of persistence, that hard work pays off and if we are really lucky this has borne fruit. Others are not so fortunate. For some their childhood was a desert from hope. No-one cheering from the side-lines to give you a positive mindset. For some as they move into adulthood all they have as role models within their local communities are people on a lifetime of welfare or minimum wage jobs that are unable to put nutritious food on the table, without the occasional visit to a food bank. Within that environment, for the average individual, how do they get to develop the mindset to nurture the skills needed to be the generation that lifts the family out of a low-income existence? We do not live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do!

We do not all have the same advantages in life.

I am not suggesting, that for some, they can have a truly crappy start in life and raise themselves out of poverty through dint of sweat, blood and tears. And well done to them. But that is not the norm. How we are brought up matters. Education matters. Wages matter. Mindset matters. Society matters. How we help people to be the best they can possibly be matters.

We do not live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do!

Just sayin'

Tory modernising wing has been destroyed, say defecting trio of MPs

Three Conservatives have quit their party to join the new Independent Group of MPs, declaring that hard Brexiters have taken over and that the modernising wing of the party has been “destroyed”.

Anna Soubry, Sarah Wollaston and Heidi Allen explained their decision to join the new group, founded this week by seven Labour MPs, who also left their party.

In a devastating critique of Theresa May’s handling of the Brexit negotiations, the three MPs said, at a press conference Wednesday afternoon, that the Tories had lurched to the right, adopting Ukip policies and pursuing a hard Brexit.
----------------
“You don’t join a political party to fight it … The truth is the battle is over and the other side have won,” she said. “Dear friends, now former colleagues, who share those one-nation values and principles will deny it. But I believe in their heads and in their hearts that they know it is over. Brexit now defends and shapes the Conservative party. I’m not leaving the Conservative party, it has left us. The modernising reforms that had taken years to achieve were destroyed.”

Bernie Sanders pushed the Democrats to the left. But now it's time for someone else to take the lead

American progressives have much to thank Bernie Sanders for. The unexpected success of the democratic socialist and long-serving Vermont senator in the 2016 presidential primary helped push the Democratic party leftwards, demonstrating that once-fringe ideas like Medicare for All (universal health coverage) are popular with voters.

Sanders was the ideological lodestar for a youthful and diverse new generation of congressional progressives, including New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and America’s first Muslim congresswomen, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. It’s thanks to Bernie that the crowded 2020 presidential primary is already packed full of candidates vying for the progressive vote. Four of them – senators Kamala Harris of California, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Cory Booker of New Jersey – are co-sponsors of Sanders’ Medicare For All Bill.

Yet it’s possible to acknowledge all this and still feel disappointed that Sanders has decided to run for president
----------
But anyone with an interest in seeing real progressive change in the US – the expansion of Medicare for all, decisive action on climate change, free college tuition, a minimum living wage – should worry that if Sanders doesn’t win the primary, he’ll only serve to fragment the progressive vote. Which means it’s a shame that Sanders isn’t prepared to step back and throw his political weight behind the candidate he believes will best advance his political legacy.

An election with two old white male and stale pols to choose from is not reflective of 2020. At ALL. And he is not a democrat and he will not win the primary. Period.

PS - read the whole article. Very good

Trump Has Publicly Attacked the Russia Investigation More Than 1,100 Times

President Trump has publicly criticized dozens of people and groups related to federal inquiries into contacts between his campaign and Russia, according to a New York Times analysis of nearly every public statement or Twitter post that he has made while in office.

The attacks, which number nearly 1,200, are part of a strategy to beat back the investigations. They have also opened him to possible obstruction of justice charges. They include statements made on Twitter, in official speeches, at rallies and during news media interviews and other press events.

While it is highly unusual for anyone — let alone the president of the United States — to comment on continuing criminal investigations, Mr. Trump has done so at least once on 330 days, or more than 43 percent of his time in office as of Feb. 14.
