ANNAPOLIS, Md. —
A Maryland judge on Friday rejected the General Assembly's newly drawn Congressional district map.
After a four-day trial, Maryland Court of Appeals Judge Lynne A. Battaglia on Friday ruled the 2021 plan violates Maryland's Free Election Clause of the Maryland Declaration of Rights. As such, the judge ruled the 2021 plan is in violation of the Maryland Constitution and Declaration of Rights and is invalid.
The judge further called the maps invalid, citing the state constitution as requiring districts to "consist of adjoining territory, be compact in form, and of substantially equal population."
The judge sent the map back to the General Assembly to develop a new plan that is compliant to the state constitution and the Voting Rights Act by March 30. A hearing is scheduled for April 1.

Trump aide Manafort removed from plane for revoked passport

MIAMI -- Former Trump adviser Paul Manafort was removed from a plane at Miami International Airport before it took off for Dubai because he carried a revoked passport, officials said Wednesday.
Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta confirmed that Manafort was removed from the Emirates Airline flight without incident Sunday night but directed further questions to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. That agency did not immediately respond to an email Wednesday seeking comment.
A lawyer who has represented Manafort did not immediately return a call and email seeking comment Wednesday.
Manafort, 72, led former President Donald Trump's campaign for several months during the 2016 presidential race but was ousted in August of that year after revelations about his business dealings in Ukraine.

Alaska U.S. Rep. Don Young died Friday, according to his former chief of staff.
Young, a Republican and the longest-serving member of Congress, lost consciousness on a flight from Los Angeles to Seattle, and couldn’t be resuscitated, said Jack Ferguson, a lobbyist who served as Young’s chief of staff.
“Everyone’s learning about it right at the moment. The phone’s ringing off the hook,” Ferguson said. “I’m sad to lose such a good friend, and a person that I’ve known all his political career.”
Young, a Republican, had served in Congress since 1973, when he was sworn in after winning a special election.

Audit: NY Health Department under Cuomo 'misled the public' on nursing home deaths

A New York Department of Health audit released on Tuesday found that former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) failed to publicly account for the deaths of 4,100 nursing home residents in New York during the coronavirus pandemic between April 2020 and February 2021.
The audit from state Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli indicated that Health Department officials underreported the death toll by up to 50 percent and concluded that the Health Department fell short of its "ethical" and "moral" obligations to report numbers accurately.
But internally, the department had the more accurate data. As of Feb. 3, 2021, the administration's internal data reported 13,147 nursing home resident deaths, but only 9,076 deaths were publicly reported, meaning more than 30 percent of deaths were not made public, the report showed.
"Rather than providing accurate and reliable information during a public health emergency, the department instead conformed its presentation to the executive's narrative, often presenting data in a manner that misled the public," the audit report said.

Supreme Court blocks torture testimony sought by terrorism suspect held in Guantanamo Bay

(CNN)The Supreme Court said Thursday that the US government can -- in the name of national security -- shield the testimony of two former government contractors from a terrorism suspect who seeks to use the information in a criminal proceeding abroad.
Abu Zubaydah, who the government says is a former associate of Osama bin Laden, was subject to "enhanced interrogation techniques" in a CIA detention center abroad and is now being held in Guantanamo Bay.
His lawyers want to use the information to hold Polish officials accountable for what Zubaydah says was his unlawful detention and torture in a CIA facility in Stare Kiejkuty, Poland.
The court's opinion could restrict access to materials, discovery or testimony in future cases that the government claims should be protected by a so-called "states secret" privilege meant to protect national security.

Supreme Court lets Kentucky attorney general take over defense of state's abortion law

The Supreme Court ruled 8-1 on Thursday that Kentucky’s Republican attorney general can pick up the legal fight over a restrictive abortion law that the state’s Democratic governor no longer wishes to defend.
Already this term, the court has allowed a Texas abortion law, the strictest in the nation, to remain in force. And it has yet to rule on a case from Mississippi with much higher stakes, which presents a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade.
Thursday’s case also involved the issue of abortion, but the ruling was about a different question: Who can represent a state in court after there’s been a shift in the political landscape?
The law at issue, which Kentucky’s legislature passed in 2018, would ban the use of a surgical abortion procedure commonly used after the 13th week of pregnancy. Immediately after the law was signed by the former governor, Republican Matt Bevin, a Louisville women’s surgical center challenged it in court.

Rep. Van Taylor apologizes for affair with 'ISIS bride,' abruptly drops reelection bid

WASHINGTON — Rep. Van Taylor apologized Wednesday for an affair with an ex-jihadist dubbed the “ISIS bride” by British tabloids and abruptly dropped his bid for a third term, conceding the GOP runoff to rival Keith Self, a former Collin County judge.
“About a year ago, I made a horrible mistake that has caused deep hurt and pain among those I love most in this world. I had an affair, it was wrong, and it was the greatest failure of my life,” he said in an email to supporters.
The infidelity surfaced just before Tuesday’s primary with help from a third candidate, Suzanne Harp.
A Plano resident named Tania Joya – widow of the most infamous American to join the Islamic State – contacted Harp last Thursday, hoping she would confront Taylor privately and persuade him to drop out and resign from Congress

Mexico declines to impose economic sanctions on Russia

MEXICO CITY, March 1 (Reuters) - Mexico will not impose any economic sanctions on Russia for invading Ukraine, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday.
He also criticized what he called censorship of Russian state-sponsored media by social media companies.
"We are not going to take any sort of economic reprisal because we want to have good relations with all the governments in the world," Lopez Obrador told a news conference.
Lopez Obrador's position stands in contrast to the international sanctions imposed on Russia for President Vladimir Putin's actions.
