Here is what to watch for:
The problem was worse than reported
Facebook, Twitter and Google have been slow to acknowledge their significance in the Russian influence campaign. Right after the election, Facebooks chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, scoffed at the idea that fake news on the site could have swayed public opinion ahead of the election.
It took months for the companies to launch their own investigations. In late September, Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that information provided by Twitter and Facebook seemed to greatly underplay their problems.
In prepared remarks, Facebook said inflammatory posts by Russian agents intending to sow discord among Americans reached 126 million users. Google, whose information security director, Richard Salgado, will testify on Tuesday, said that the same agents, from the Kremlin-linked Internet Research Agency, uploaded over 1,000 videos on Googles YouTube service. Twitter said they published more 131,000 messages on Twitter.
And they admitted they were wading into new territory.

How to watch Facebook, Google and Twitter testify to Congress about Russia and the 2016 election
The first of three hearings begins today.
Senior executives from Facebook, Google and Twitter will submit on Tuesday to the first of three grueling grillings before U.S. lawmakers who are investigating Russias suspected interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Kicking it off is the Senate Judiciary Committees top crime and terrorism panel, chaired by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. The focus is on the extent to which Kremlin-backed agents and trolls sought to spread disinformation and extremist content on major social media platforms and what, exactly, the U.S. Congress should do about it.
Representing Facebook at the hearing is Colin Stretch, the companys general counsel; from Google itll be Rich Salgado, the search giants director of law enforcement and information security; and standing in for Twitter is Sean Edgett, the companys acting general counsel.
The hearing officially begins at 2:30 pm ET/11:30 am PT, and you can watch live here. Well update this post with embedded video once it becomes available.
Lawmakers on two other committees the House and Senate Intelligence Committees will press tech executives at two back-to-back hearings beginning tomorrow morning.

Jeff Sessions suggests DOJ will crack down on marijuana growers, even in states that legalized weed
Sessions made the comments on conservative radio host Hugh Hewitts show Thursday morning, after Hewitt asked whether the Department of Justice would be prosecuting marijuana growers for being criminal enterprises.
A lot of states are just simply breaking the law and a lot of money is being made and banked, Hewitt said to Sessions of marijuana growers and sellers. One [Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations] prosecution of one producer and the banks that service them would shut this all down. Is such a prosecution going to happen?
Sessions told Hewitt that he didnt think one [RICO] prosecution would be quite as effective as that, but said he doesnt think states that legalized the drug had the right to ignore current federal laws that ban the sale of marijuana.
I do not believe theres any argument that because a state legalizes marijuana, that the federal law against marijuana is no longer in existence, Sessions said. I do believe that the federal laws clearly are in effect in all 50 states and we will do our best to enforce the laws as were required to do so.

Was there ever a doubt. Really? Russian hackers hacked ONLY the DNC servers.Trump has Russian mafia ties. Trump is BFF with Putin. Dots are pretty close together there. Does not require great deductive skills...
If there is outrage to be had, it should really be directed at the ties between trump and russia. This is a direct threat to our country. Foreign entities are trying to manipulate our elections.

During the 2016 election season, Facebook provided political advertisers with a targetable breakdown of a fractured United States, which couldve been used as a blueprint for exploiting the countrys divisions.
According to a political advertising sales pitch obtained by BuzzFeed News, Facebook carved the US electorate into 14 segments from left-leaning "youthful urbanites" to a pro-NRA, proTea Party group it bizarrely labeled as "the great outdoors." It detailed their demographic information including religion and race in some cases and offered them to political advertisers via Facebooks sales teams. For advertisers using Facebooks self-serve platform, the segments could be reached by purchasing larger bundles ranging from very liberal to very conservative.
The "very liberal" bundle included an estimated audience of 28.6 million people broken down into three groups youthful urbanites, transitionals, and politically engaged city dwellers. The "very conservative" bundle included an estimated audience of 22.8 million people broken down into three groups post grad nest builders," family values, and the great outdoors.
This type of approach is almost exclusively designed for nonpolitical professional people who want to mix it up.
We typically help marketers across all verticals understand audiences this way, and we briefly used this framework to help inform how a small number of marketers built their campaigns, a Facebook spokesperson told BuzzFeed News, adding the pitch had been removed as part of a "regular refresh." Said the spokesperson, these segments are no longer available.

Clinton Campaign, DNC Paid for Research Behind Russia Dossier
Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that resulted in the famous Steele dossier, which posited that connections exist between President Donald Trump and Russia.
Sources cited in the Washington Post story did not disclose dollar amounts paid to the firm that conducted the research, but they said Clinton's campaign and the DNC shared the cost.
That firm, Fusion GPS, hired former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele.
Marc E. Elias is a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign as well as the DNC, and made the decision to work with Fusion GPS in April 2016. At that point was funded by an unknown GOP client while the primary was still going on.
Steele gave reports and other documents to Elias, but one source claimed that he or she was not aware of the role of Steele's work.
The people aware of the matter claimed that the Clinton campaign didn't direct Steele's research.
