Muslim & Hindu immigrants to U.S. are highly educated, study shows

So the next time you hear a xenophobe yammering about how all these Muslim and Indian immigrants are nothing but a drain on society, send them a link to this story on a new Pew study:

Hindus and Muslims who have migrated to the United States in recent years are especially well-educated, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center. On average, Hindus in the U.S. have nearly 16 years of schooling, significantly more than Jews, the next most highly-educated U.S. religious group. Muslim Americans have nearly 14 years of schooling, which is well above the U.S. average.

The high education levels of U.S. Hindus and Muslims are in stark contrast to the schooling levels of those populations worldwide, where they are the two least educated of all religious groups, with just 5.6 years of schooling on average. The Pew data underscore how U.S. policies and world migration patterns have produced a highly selective representation of the two immigrant groups.

"Hindus and Muslims in the United States are a pretty elite segment of the global Hindu and Muslim population," says Conrad Hackett, a Pew demographic researcher.

In both cases, they are generally newcomers. Nearly nine out of ten Hindus in the United States and two out of every three Muslims were born outside the country, according to Hackett.

My first thought was "They call it the Trump test." But this person captured the joke so much better with a picture:

Heroin deaths surpass gun homicides for the first time, CDC data shows

Source: Washington Post

Opioid deaths continued to surge in 2015, surpassing 30,000 for the first time in recent history, according to CDC data released Thursday.

That marks an increase of nearly 5,000 deaths from 2014. Deaths involving powerful synthetic opiates, like fentanyl, rose by nearly 75 percent from 2014 to 2015.

Heroin deaths spiked too, rising by more than 2,000 cases. For the first time since at least the late 1990s, there were more deaths due to heroin than to traditional opioid painkillers, like hydrocodone and oxycodone.

"The epidemic of deaths involving opioids continues to worsen," said CDC Director Tom Frieden in a statement. "Prescription opioid misuse and use of heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl are intertwined and deeply troubling problems."

The article goes on to report that gun homicides outnumbered heroin deaths by more than 5 to 1 in 2007.

I didn't realize the scope of this problem. I mean, I've heard plenty of news reports about the growing opioid crisis, but I wasn't aware it had reached this scale already. Yikes!

Damn Yankees sew up Aroldis Chapman

$86 million over 5 years.

Chapman is a proven closer. I'm wondering how Gary Sanchez is going to perform at the plate in 2017. He set lofty expectations based on his 53 games this season.

So Drumpf doesn't need any "celebrities"???

So in the continuing theme of hypocrisy, Drumpf repeatedly criticizes Hillary for using celebrity endorsements, like Jay Z and Beyonce, and says he doesn't need any himself. But then he has Ted Nugent singing his praises on stage in Michigan on Sunday before Drumpf gives his crappy speech.

And Nugent was a classy as you'd expect...

“I’ve got your blue state right here — black and blue,” Nugent said as he grabbed his groin. “Each and every one of you have only 24 hours to convince the numb nuts that you know, that you can’t vote for criminals, you can’t vote for liars, you can’t vote for scam artists.”

Also demonstrating Nugent's integrity, check out this thread by Tommy Carcetti:

Drumpf doesn't know it, but he would be better off without a "celebrity" endorsement like that one.

The Simpson about to become TV's longest-running scripted series

Fox has renewed for seasons 29 and 30, pushing the series to episode 669. Gunsmoke held the record at 635 episodes.

The Simpsons launched in 1989. In its most recent season, the show still drew approximiately 7.2 million viewers.

Do you watch it? Have you ever? Love it? Hate it? Tired of it?

I've never been a big fan, to be honest. I've seen portions of a few episodes and clips here and there, but it never hooked me. I prefer Family Guy, but I don't watch that regularly either.
