WASHINGTON — White House chief of staff John Kelly has eroded morale in the West Wing in recent months with comments to aides that include insulting the president's intelligence and casting himself as the savior of the country, according to eight current and former White House officials.
The officials said Kelly portrays himself to Trump administration aides as the lone bulwark against catastrophe, curbing the erratic urges of a president who has a questionable grasp on policy issues and the functions of government. He has referred to Trump as "an idiot" multiple times to underscore his point, according to four officials who say they've witnessed the comments.
Three White House spokespeople said they don't believe it's accurate that Kelly called the president an "idiot," adding that none of them has ever heard him do that or otherwise use that word.
Presidential historian Michael Beschloss said Kelly's comments about Trump, when compared to previous White House chiefs of staff, "suggest a lack of respect for the sitting president of a kind that we haven't seen before." Beschloss said the closest similarity would be President Ronald Reagan's chief of staff during his second term, Don Regan, who "somewhat looked down on" his boss and eventually lost the support of the staff and the president. Regan was replaced after two years by Howard Baker.

The reason why we are dealing with this year's "controversy" is that a comedienne DARED to make harsh jokes about a woman who lies for and enables a man who is thoroughly corrupt and unrepentant. Boo hoo hoo.
Many of you have probably seen the screen grab of Lewandowski flashing the "White Power" symbol at Trump's Michigan "rally":
IMHO, we should be more concerned with the never-ending barrage of dog whistles from the Trump camp. The WHCD is an evening of rubber chicken, hit-and-miss jokes, and yes...obnoxiously sucking up to power, which coincidentally also describes every working day at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, or Mar-a-Lago, or wherever Trump has parked his fat orange ass.
If the dinner dies while Trump is in office, he will declare a moral victory in silencing his critics. If it becomes history five minutes after he's out of office, I won't shed any tears.
I'm OK with ending the WHCD AFTER Trump has left office, NOT BEFORE.

No, the event is inappropriate because it’s an obnoxious suck-up to power, no matter who the president is or how edgy the comedian. The press and the politicians lining up on red carpets with Hollywood celebrities and yukking it up together, as if politics and government were just one big performance and this was their awards show, has always been an excellent illustration of everything that’s wrong with our civic life. US President Donald Trump suggested Monday that his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un be held in the truce village that straddles the border separating the two Koreas.
“Numerous countries are being considered for the MEETING, but would Peace House/Freedom House, on the Border of North & South Korea, be a more Representative, Important and Lasting site than a third party country? Just asking!” Trump tweeted.
The Peace House in Panmunjom, the truce village in the Demilitarized Zone that separates the two Koreas, was where Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in met Friday for a historic summit.
Kim, the first North Korean leader to set foot in the South since the 1953 armistice that halted the Korean War, walked with Moon to the Peace House on the southern side of the border.
