Alexander Sasha Shulgin, the pioneering pharmacologist who introduced MDMA to psychologists in the 1970s, has died aged 88 after a battle with liver cancer.
Shulgin was famed for having synthesized and tested over 200 psychedelic drugs.
He earned the title, the Godfather of ecstasy, after developing a new synthesis method for MDMA the purest available form of ecstasy in 1976. He passed it on to his therapist friend Leo Zeff, who began using the drugs effects on an individuals emotional states during sessions with clients.
Shortly after his introduction, ecstasy broke into the mainstream, infiltrating the club culture in New York and Chicago, and hitting the shores of Ibiza, before finally landing in the UK.

Investigation: More than 500 child abuse reports made against BBC star Jimmy Savile
Source: AFP
More than 500 reports of abuse on victims aged as young as two have been made against late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, according to a new investigation by the NSPCC charity published Monday.
The probe found that Savile, one of the biggest TV stars in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s, exploited high-level contacts to gain access to vulnerable victims at a high-security psychiatric hospital.
Theres no doubt that Savile is one of the most, if not the most, prolific sex offender that we at the NSPCC have ever come across, said Peter Watt, director of child protection at the childrens charity.
What you have is somebody who at his most prolific lost no opportunity to identify vulnerable victims and abuse them.
The investigation was commissioned by BBC programme Panorama and will be aired at 8.30pm local time (1930 GMT).

Medical Marijuana Patients: Congress Votes To End The War
The Deathstar suffered serious setbacks Thursday night as rebel forces rallied to wage a
no, but seriously, Thursday night the DEA suffered serious setbacks in their continuing war against legitimate medical marijuana patients and providers when Congress forces approved an amendment that effectively prevents the Department of Justice and the DEA from interfering with states rights to implement and regulate their own medical marijuana laws.
Amendment 25 to H.R. 4660, the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), marks the first time in history that Congress has voted (219-189) in favor of ending the federal governments open targeting of medical marijuana with use of public funds. After six previous failed attempts to pass similar legislation, Amendment 25 passed with a record high 49 Republicans crossing party lines and joining the 170 Democrats in voting for the measure. In the previous six failed attempts, the most Republicans who voted in favor were 15. The real victory here isnt the wording or implementation of this amendment, but rather the clear marker of the first time our legislators have taken any affirmative step in ending the prohibition on marijuana (medical or otherwise).
To get crusty, uptight, grandfathered into term, delegates to vote pro weed is a victory in itself. Was it Gupta and the medical community doing a complete 180 on the benefits of cannabis? Or was it the fact the Colorado and Washington models didnt spontaneously combust into unholy flames, whilst turning everyone into salt? Or maybe it was the tax revenue generated by Harborside alone for the city of Oakland? Seems like these days, some of the staunchest cannabis opponents are the first to jump on the bandwagon. (and its probably a phish bandwagon). Regardless of the reason, its pretty obvious that the dominoes are falling, and its only a matter of time before other pot-friendly legislation hits the floor. Hopefully by that time conservatives cease to consider it a partisan issue. That speakeasy life can only last so long.
Albeit this is a step in the right direction, I wouldnt go rushing out to dance in the streets just yet. Amendment 25 is intended to prohibit obstruction of state medical marijuana programs using tax dollars, but dont put it past the DEA and over zealous joint narcotic task forces to come up with new and creative ways to be a buzz kill. What? You think theyre just going to give up that easily?

S.F. at loss over Rat Girl’s rodent hoarding (video)
First, there was Batkid. Now, sadly, there is Rat Girl and shes contributing to a skin-crawling public health problem in San Francisco.
KTVUs David Stevenson reports that a troubled San Francisco woman has been breeding rats and letting them loose into the city for years.
Identified only as 43-year-old Erica J., the woman first came to the attention of the city in 2011 when Animal Care and Control discovered she had bred hundreds of rats out of her room at a Minna Street residential hotel in the South of Market neighborhood.
By the end of that May, public health officials had exterminated thousands of rats from the surrounding area.
Later, KTVU reported, Animal Care and Control reported finding Erica living under a Japantown pedestrian bridge with rats living off of her cart. Not surprisingly, several of the rats had escaped and infested the nearby area.
Then, this month, a passerby reported seeing Erica living with at least eight rats in a park at Golden Gate Avenue and Steiner Street. Video obtained by KTVU caught the vermin eating out of a plastic bowl filled with dog food.
