Sanders Remarks to Sunrise Movement's Road to Green New Deal Tour

Bernie Sanders
May 13

Excerpt:

If we are going to be honest about combating climate change it is necessary for us to understand that we have an economy that is rigged and a political system that is profoundly corrupt. In other words we have small number of incredibly powerful billionaires who exercise enormous influence over the economic and political life of the country.

That is why the President and Congress voted to provide a trillion and a half dollars in tax breaks to the top one percent and large profitable corporations while refusing to make public colleges and universities tuition free and substantially reduce student debt in this county.

And it is exactly the same thing with the fossil fuel industry. Like the tobacco industry of 50 years ago, who denied that cigarette smoking causes cancer and other diseases, the fossil fuel industry, making billions every year, denies what carbon emissions are doing to our planet. They lie, lie and lie, and spend hundreds of millions of dollars to buy politicians who echo their lies.

In the last decade alone, the oil/gas industry has pumped more than $700 million worth of campaign contributions into federal, state and local elections. In that same time, they spent more than $1.5 billion lobbying in Washington, D.C.

These companies lied to the American people about the very existence of climate change and committed one of the greatest frauds in the history of our country.

Philly's work to reform cash bail should inspire the nation - Bernie Sanders

Updated: May 13, 2019 - 12:00 PM
Bernie Sanders, For the Inquirer

After decades of politicians in Washington supporting mass incarceration, America is now spending $80 billion a year to lock up 2.2 million people — the highest incarceration rate in the world. What’s more, in a country that prides itself on the principle of presuming innocence, nearly half a million people who are in jail across the country haven’t even been convicted of any crime — and that includes roughly 60 percent of all prisoners in Pennsylvania. That is because many people accused of a crime cannot afford bail.

This creates a modern-day debtors prison. Add to that a racial wealth gap that leaves African American and Latino communities with higher rates of poverty, and “tough on crime” policies that disproportionately target those same communities, and what we have is a criminal justice system that is effectively criminalizing communities of color.

This is an international embarrassment — one that I and other progressives have been opposing for years in Congress. Our government today makes sure Wall Street criminals get bailouts and never face charges in a courtroom, while low-income people are locked away in jail cells simply because they are poor and have inadequate legal counsel.

When our movement defeats Donald Trump in 2020, things are finally going to change. But even before we get to that presidential election, the people of Philadelphia have an upcoming opportunity to start making changes right now in 2019. On May 21, you will have a chance to vote for local judicial candidates who pledge to end cash bail.

With this critical judicial primary on May 21, the people of Philadelphia have a chance to prove to the world that this kind of revolution in criminal justice is possible in America.

Your votes in your city’s upcoming election can start to fix our broken criminal justice system — and then your votes in the 2020 presidential election can help us bring that change to the entire country.

Sanders to join Ocasio-Cortez at rally as climate fight heats up

May 11, 2019, 11:18 AM EDT
By Benjy Sarlin

WASHINGTON — Sen. Bernie Sanders will speak at a Green New Deal rally at Howard University on Monday that also features Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, organizers said.

The event, organized by the Sunrise Movement, gives the 2020 contender a high-profile platform to court the environmental left.

Sanders' planned appearance comes as Democratic candidates are starting to spar over their climate plans and recent polls show environmental issues taking on greater importance for Democratic voters than inprior elections.

The speaking schedule for Monday's event was not finalized and it’s possible more senators, including other presidential contenders, will attend. The group is using the rally to unveil a plan to pressure 2020 Democrats to make the Green New Deal's goals a focus of their campaign, headlined by a planned demonstration at the second Democratic debate this July in Detroit.
