Obama On 'You Didn't Build That': 'Obviously I Have Regrets For My Syntax'

Source: Huffington Post

President Barack Obama told a local Virginia television station Wednesday that he had "regrets" for an ill-phrased remark attacked by Republicans -- "You didn't build that" -- but he stands by his larger point about infrastructure investment being necessary for businesses to succeed.

"Obviously I have regrets for my syntax," Obama said. "But not for the point, because everyone who was there watching knows exactly what I was saying."

"This is a tendency for the other side to shade the truth a little bit to try to win political points," he added.

Speaking in July in Virginia, the president had said, "If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help." He continued, "There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

Those last two sentences have been endlessly repeated by Republicans to paint the president as anti-business, even becoming a theme -- "We built this" -- for one day of their convention last week in Tampa, Fla.

Costco cofounder at Democratic convention: ‘Costco’s story is the American story’

Source: Issaquah Press

-snip-

“We’re proud that Costco pays the highest wages among our peers, that we provide benefit and health care plans that are second to none, that we’ve grown our business by promoting from within,” he said. “So we’re not just giving Costco people jobs, we’re empowering them to build careers and support middle-class families.”

The company cofounder also used the speech to look back at Costco’s roots.

“Three decades ago, a friend and I had a big idea for a small business: a wholesale store that would provide our members with great products at low prices while treating our employees fairly,” Sinegal said. “Today, our small company has been blessed with success—in bulk. Costco is the fifth-largest retailer in the U.S., the seventh-largest in the world.”

Sinegal acknowledged the widespread support for Romney among the business community, but said Obama’s plan to invest in education, infrastructure and research makes better sense for business.

“Business needs a president who has covered businesses’ backs,” Sinegal said. “A president who understands what the private sector needs to succeed. A president who takes the long view and makes the tough decisions.”

Report: US health care system wastes $750B a year

Source: AP

WASHINGTON -- A new report says the U.S. health care system squanders $750 billion a year - roughly 30 cents of every medical dollar.

That's through unneeded care, byzantine paperwork, fraud, fragmentation and other wasteful practices.

The report was released Thursday by the influential Institute of Medicine. It ties directly into the presidential election: President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are accusing each other of slashing Medicare and putting seniors at risk.

But the counter-intuitive finding from the report is that deep cuts are possible without rationing, and a leaner system may even produce better quality.

The 18-member panel of experts includes doctors, business people and public officials. They spent more than year working on the study.

Mitt Romney’s psychopathic rage should frighten everyone (Video)

http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/188177/mitt-romneys-psychopathic-rage-should-frighten-everyone-video/

from the link:

-snip-

It has been my thought for some time that Romney is, beneath it all, a psychopath who is just barely able to conceal his real face—his shadow self, to get Jungian for a moment. What we have below is four-year old campaign video evidence of that real Romney. This Romney is sublimated in order to make money and gain political power to make more money for him and his friends.

Watch the video, in which an AP reporter reminds Romney that his ’08 campaign was run by a lobbyist, and tell me if you cannot see that Romney’s shadow is aching to break out of his meat suit and beat the living shit out of the reporter. Romney’s face says everything and it is truly terrifying. Romney’s mask disappears and we are shown the psychopathic rage on which his entire business career and political ethos were founded: a blank expression concealing total rage at everyone in the world who doesn’t agree with him or whom he finds socially inferior.

Romney, not willing to be upstaged by a plebeian who called bullshit on his lie, finishes the press conference then circles back to the AP reporter for a second round. Watch his face and his eyes: they practically darken.

It is, quite simply, the psychopathology of privilege.

And that is the man who wants to run this country.

Romney Blasts Obama over Food Stamp Record

Source: farms.com

U.S. President Barack Obama was under fire yesterday after Republican candidate Mitt Romney blamed him for the size of the national debt and the record number of American citizens who are on food stamps. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, assists low-income people in the U.S. to buy food. It’s a national program that falls under the U.S. Department of Agriculture mandate and it’s administered by each state and their local agencies.

Making reference to the U.S. Department of Agriculture report, Romney said "the other number's forty-seven. Forty-seven million now on food stamps. When he came to office there were 32 million. He's added 15 million people.” The new figure shows a shocking 15 per cent of Americans reliant on food stamps.

Obama on the defense said “people become eligible for food stamps. Second of all, the initial expansion of food-stamp eligibility happened under my Republican predecessor, not under me. No. 3, when you have a disastrous economic crash that results in 8 million people losing their jobs, more people are going to need more support from government,” Obama said in a ABC News interview.

do the republicans realize the $ amount given in food stamps on an individual basis? my family relied on food stamps when I was a kid and it usually afforded us 2 trips to the grocery store, and always ran out by mid month....

The American food stamp program is one of the most compassionate programs we have in place and it will NEVER take the place of a working income and will NEVER cause an able-bodied person to not want to work because they are living the food stamp hi-life! I am getting tired of this dog whistle... here are a few real #'s on food-stamp benefits by state (wouldn't even cover a day of tips for Mitt):

Fact check: Bill Clinton at the DNC

Source: des moines register/usa today/factcheck.org

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (USA TODAY) — Former president Bill Clinton's stem-winding nomination speech was a fact-checker's nightmare: lots of effort required to run down his many statistics and factual claims, producing little for us to write about.

Republicans will find plenty of Clinton's scorching opinions objectionable. But with few exceptions, we found his stats checked out.

Candidate Romney Will Finally Meet the Press

Source: politico

Mitt Romney has made the gentlemanly decision to lay low during the Democratic National Convention, but Politico reports that he'll come back swinging this weekend with a taped interview on Meet the Press. Romney hasn't been on the show since December 2009, and it will mark only his second appearance on a non-Fox News Sunday show during this election cycle. He and David Gregory have a lot of catching up to do.

it was President Obama that ordered GOD and Jerusalem be put back into the platform...

From the article.....

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/in-depth/us-election/barack-obama-orders-god-jerusalem-back-into-democrats-platform/story-fn95xh4y-1226466291194

BARACK Obama has ordered Democrats to reinsert references to God and Jerusalem in their party platform, quickly moving to snuff out a damaging political row.

The controversy had threatened to detract from the party's drive to draw a sharp contrast with Republican nominee Mitt Romney on the eve of the President's crucial nominating speech tomorrow.

Delegates at their Charlotte, North Carolina convention had faced a torrent of Republican criticism and some from within the party after dropping pro-forma references to God and the party's support for Jerusalem being recognized as the capital of Israel.

A campaign official said Mr Obama , who has been hammered by Republicans who see him as too tough on Israel, personally intervened to have language on Jerusalem, a feature of past party platforms, restored.

--------------------------------------------

I actually see his asking for the wording to be changed as a big plus.... With the video of some on the floor booing when they made the change, this shows that Barack Obama can make a stand for something that he thinks is right, even if there are a good part of his party that disgree... I am not sure how I feel about the change, but I do have a sense that this was a good move/statement on his part...
