Could he look more like Trump's fool?

Sens. Chuck Schumer, Jack Reed, John McCain, and Lindsey Graham are pushing for a select committee to investigate Russia's interference in the election. Colorado Sen. Corey Gardner is planning legislation to create a select Senate committee on cybersecurity. And here’s where the Republican Senate caucus is splitting, because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says nope, he's not interested and will not allow creation of a select committee on this. “There’s no question that the Russians were messing around in our election,” he told Kentucky Educational Television on Monday night. “It is a matter of genuine concern and it needs to be investigated.”

McConnell added that he believed Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the Senate Intelligence Committee chairman, and Mark Warner (D-Va.), a ranking member of the panel, were “fully capable” of handling the matter.

Burr outlined steps last week that his committee would take to review the intelligence that led U.S. intelligence officials to accuse Russia in October of hacking the Democratic National Committee. The panel would interview government officials from the outgoing Obama administration and incoming Trump administration, using subpoenas to force testimony if needed, he said.

The chairman notably made no mention of the more recent intelligence assessments that reportedly found Russian hacking efforts were aimed at boosting President-elect Donald Trump’s chances of winning the election.........................

National Enquirer morphs into propaganda rag for President-elect Trump

Zero verification, half-truths and outright lies. What more can a president-elect ask for?

More than a month after the election, the news industry is still at a loss for how to cover Donald Trump as he transitions into power. Fact checks have proven ineffective, press conferences have virtually gone extinct, and Trump’s supporters couldn’t care in the slightest about what reporters are uncovering.

Already, several journalists and news organizations are acquiescing to Trump’s authoritarian demands of the media, accepting off-the-record invitations to his Palm Springs compound or striking deals to provide more favorable coverage in exchange for greater access.

..........................

If the transition period is any indication, it might well look a lot like your neighborhood supermarket check-out line. The National Enquirer—publisher of such exclusives as Michelle Obama’s 2014 divorce from President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s six month death sentence fifteen months ago—has been among Donald Trump’s most visible boosters since the election.

Trump’s adoration of the National Enquirer is not new. He has a longstanding friendship with CEO David Pecker, defended the publication as unimpeachable, and has even written articles for the tabloid. The admiration is mutual, too: in August, the Wall Street Journal reported the Enquirer paid $150,000 to prevent a story about Trump’s affair with a former Playboy model from being released, and they were one of the only publications to endorse him.............................

Water Scientists Say Human Behavior Affects Health Of Waterways
By Scottie Lee Meyers

There's an experiment water scientists like to do this time of year to prove the point that human behavior affects the health of our lakes and rivers and other waterways.

Cinnamon and vanilla are two ingredients we tend to consume more of during the holidays, be it for meals on the Thanksgiving table, batches of gingerbread cookies or the seasonal cup of coffee.

Sure enough, researchers have detected the deliciously innocent spices in waterways throughout the country when they take water samples in early winter.

In fact, oceanographers in Washington found that come December, the fish of Puget Sound swim in a "big, dilute latte." .............

PHILADELPHIA, PA - SEPTEMBER 7: Retired United States Army lieutenant general Michael T. Flynn introduces Republican Presidential nominee Donald J. Trump before he delivered a speech at The Union League of Philadelphia on September 7, 2016 in Philadelphia,

There's been a lot of discussion surrounding Donald Trump and the so-called "alt-right" (which is basically a term for white nationalism) in the weeks that have passed since the 2016 election. Many members of the white nationalist group have been outspoken Trump supporters, including the founder of the movement itself, Richard Spencer. Trump has also appointed Steve Bannon as his chief strategist — a man who has been heavily associated with the "alt-right."

The "alt-right" is known for its extremist and racist views, as well as being severely anti-Semitic. It seems like the association between the Trump campaign and neo-Nazis won't be broken any time soon, as his chosen national security advisor, General Mike Flynn, recently met with Heinz-Christian Strache — the head of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party, which was established by former Nazis after World War II.

The New York Times reported that Strache announced the meeting via a Facebook post, where he also shared that he signed a "cooperation agreement" with Russia. The two pieces of information were communicated in separate paragraphs in Strache's Facebook post, originally written in German. The meeting with Flynn was mentioned casually and briefly — but it is something that should not be taken lightly.

The Freedom Party was originally created to be a safe haven for Nazis and Nazi sympathizers after World War II and the Holocaust. In the '80s, Jörg Haider became its leader, and the party took a turn toward right-wing populism with a strong anti-immigration stance. As the New York Times explains, today, the party is "anti-foreigner, anti-Islam and anti-globalization" making it an appealing party for Europe's far-right — much like the white nationalist "alt-right" in the U.S.

It should be obvious that this meeting between Trump's National Security Advisor and the leader of a neo-Nazi movement is extremely alarming. This meeting calls back to the words of representatives from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, who spoke out after the "alt-right" held a chilling conference in Washington D.C. praising Trump. They reminded us, through their statement, that the Holocaust didn't begin with killing – it began with words. .................

Billionaire Betsy DeVos, Trump’s pick for Sec of Education, has even found a way to profit from the #FlintWaterCrisis

by Eclectablog

The image at the top of this post was once the Twitter banner of billionaire Betsy DeVos until she got busted for it. What makes the image so controversial is the blatant product placement. Those little white boxes that look like something out of the movie Repo Man are for a “boxed water” product sold by the company Boxed Water is Better LLC whose tagline is “Boxed Water is Better”.

The DeVos connection to Boxed Water is a short straight line. DeVos is the chairwoman of a privately held investment group named The Windquest Group:

Among The Windquest Group’s portfolio of companies is Boxed Water. In fact, The Windquest Group’s address listed on an SEC filing (201 Monroe Ave. NW, Suite 500, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49503) is the same as the address listed on Boxed Water’s contact page.

Boxed Water is pitched as an environmentally-preferred alternative to plastic water bottles. Their packaging, according to their greenwashing marketing effort, is 74% paper (“…made from trees, a renewable resource”!) and is recyclable (as are plastic PET water bottles, by the way, which are far more likely to actually BE recycled.)

WARSAW — The Law and Justice Party rode to power on a pledge to drain the swamp of Polish politics and roll back the legacy of the previous administration. One year later, its patriotic revolution, the party proclaims, has cleaned house and brought God and country back to Poland.

Opponents, however, see the birth of a neo-Dark Age — one that, as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to move into the White House, is a harbinger of the power of populism to upend a Western society. In merely a year, critics say, the nationalists have transformed Poland into a surreal and insular place — one where state-sponsored conspiracy theories and de facto propaganda distract the public as democracy erodes.

[The global wave of populism that turned 2016 upside down]

In the land of Law and Justice, anti-intellectualism is king.
Polish scientists are aghast at proposed curriculum changes in a new education bill that would downplay evolution theory and climate change and add hours for “patriotic” history lessons. In a Facebook chat, a top equal rights official mused that Polish hotels should not be forced to provide service to black or gay customers. After the official stepped down for unrelated reasons, his successor rejected an international convention to combat violence against women because it appeared to argue against traditional gender roles..........................
