COVID-19 has become the No. 1 cop killer

Source: local10.com

MIAMI – COVID-19 has been the number one killer of law enforcement officers in 2020 and 2021 to date, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which tracks line-of-duty deaths.

In South Florida alone, five officers were recently lost in just one week.

“It is the most important officer safety issue of our lifetime,” said Miami Police Assistant Chief Armando Aguilar, who is among the leadership pushing for police to get vaccinated.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund says they are witnessing a continued increase in COVID deaths with more and more cases coming in every day. The organization says more officers are lost to COVID in the line of duty than any other cause combined, including gunfire..............................

Fox News host says kids 'don't die from COVID.' Over 400 have in the US alone.

Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy said children "don't die from COVID," but hundreds of children have.

"Does the vaccine work? ... So if the vaccines work, why are you worried about children being unmasked?" Campos-Duffy asked

Data suggests that children are vulnerable to the delta variant of the coronavirus.

Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy on Wednesday claimed that children "don't die from COVID," but since the viral outbreak began in 2020, hundreds of children have.

Campos-Duffy, who also appears as a contributor on the network, made the comment on "The Faulkner Focus" during a discussion of the use of masks in schools.

"Does the vaccine work? ... So if the vaccines work, why are you worried about children being unmasked?" Campos-Duffy asked. Told by another guest, "I'm worried about kids under 12 who don't have the vaccine," she responded, "The kids survive COVID, they don't die from COVID. It's very, very rare."

Data collected by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association shows that since May 2020 and through Aug. 26 of this year, at least 425 children have died of COVID in the United States. The same data shows that at least 812,130 children have been hospitalized and 4.7 million overall cases of children with COVID-19 have been recorded.

The rates of infection, hospitalization, and mortality among children are much lower than among adults, but they can get COVID-19 and die, and data suggests that children are more vulnerable to the delta variant, and rates of hospitalization soar. Children's Hospital Association CEO Mark Wietecha said in a news release, "Our children's health care safety net is under unprecedented strain."................................

Don Blankenship's Libel Lawsuit Against Donald Trump, Jr. Can Go Forward

Source: Reason.com

Blankenship had been convicted of a misdemeanor related to a deadly disaster at a mine his company owned; Trump, Jr. had erroneously labeled him a "felon"; a judge concluded that there's enough evidence that Trump, Jr. knew the statement was false, or at least likely false.

Eugene Volokh | 9.1.2021 4:30 PM

Today's decision in Blankenship v. Trump, by Judge John Copenhaver (S.D. W. Va.), deals with Donald Trump, Jr.'s Tweet that called Don Blankenship—who had been running in the Republican primary for a West Virginia Senate seat—a "felon." (Blankenship alleges that the Trump team wanted their own preferred candidate to win the primary.) Blankenship had been convicted of a misdemeanor, but not a felony:

Following an explosion in a West Virginia mine on April 5, 2010, that resulted in the death of twenty-nine (29) miners, the United States government initiated an investigation into the cause of the explosion. While the plaintiff was not charged with the death of the miners or with causing the explosion, the government later charged the plaintiff with three felonies, including conspiracy to defraud the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, and one misdemeanor for conspiracy to violate federal mine safety laws. On December 3, 2015, a federal jury found the plaintiff not guilty of the felony charges but convicted him of the misdemeanor offense. The plaintiff was sentenced to one year in prison, which the plaintiff served and from which he was released in the spring of 2017.

The court denied Donald Trump, Jr.'s motion to dismiss, concluding that erroneously calling a misdemeanant a felon was potentially defamatory:

On the question of falsity[, "][West Virginia libel law] overlooks minor inaccuracies and concentrates upon substantial truth. Minor inaccuracies do not amount to falsity so long as the substance, the gist, the sting, of the libelous charge be justified. A statement is not considered false unless it would have a different effect on the mind of the reader from that which the pleaded truth would have produced.["] "f something is 'substantially' true in overall effect, minor inaccuracies or falsities will not create falsity." …

I am sure Jr will delay delay delay. But there is HOPE and Lady Justice

@JanNWolfe
Donald Trump Jr. lost in court today. A judge refused to dismiss a lawsuit alleging Trump Jr. defamed a political candidate by falsely calling him a "felon."

Trump Jr. said he made a reasonable mistake.

The judge wrote: "Trump Jr. completely misses the point with this argument"

Again: Roberts, Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan all wrote separate dissents highlighting different aspects of their disagreement with the majority (which partially explains the delay).

Didn't matter. Barrett's fifth vote made all the difference. https://supremecourt.gov/opinions/20pdf

Effort underway to rescue girls soccer team from Afghanistan

Source: AP

By ALEX SANZ and TAMMY WEBBER an hour ago

..............................
...........................

An international effort to evacuate members of the Afghanistan national girls soccer team, along with dozens of family members and soccer federation staff, suffered a crushing setback last week after a suicide bombing at the Kabul airport killed 169 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members during a harrowing airlift.

Now, frightened and desperate, the girls worry whether a far-flung coalition of former U.S. military and intelligence officials, congressmen, U.S. allies, humanitarian groups and the captain of the Afghanistan women’s national team can get them and their loved ones to safety.

“They’re just unbelievable young ladies who should be playing in the backyard, playing on the swing set, playing with their friends, and here they’re in a very bad situation for doing nothing more than playing soccer,” said Robert McCreary, a former congressional chief of staff and White House official under President George W. Bush who has worked with special forces in Afghanistan. “We need to do everything that we can to protect them, to get them to a safe situation.”

Most members of the Afghan women’s team, formed in 2007, were evacuated to Australia last week.

But the girls, ages 14-16, and their families also could be targeted by the Taliban — not just because women and girls are forbidden to play sports, but because they were advocates for girls and active members of their communities, said Farkhunda Muhtaj, who is captain of the Afghanistan women’s national team and lives in Canada................................................................................................................

I want to be hopeful for these girls and their families--but it is hard.

International efforts to rescue them and soccer federation staff suffered a crushing setback last week after a suicide bomb detonated at the Kabul airport and the CIA blew up its last remaining outpost to keep sensitive information and equipment from falling into the hands of the Taliban. 'AntivaxMomma' Charged With Selling Fake COVID Cards To Frontline Workers

Source: Crooks and Liars

9/01/21 4:07am

Jasmine Clifford, aka @AntivaxMomma, allegedly used her Instagram account to sell forged COVID vaccine cards to 250 people, including 13 frontline workers in hospitals and nursing homes.

.........................................

Clifford began advertising the counterfeit COVID-19 vaccination cards through her Instagram account, which is no longer active, in May, according to the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The cards cost $200 and buyers used CashApp or Zelle to pay for them, prosecutors said. For another $250, Clifford allegedly worked with Nadayza Barkley, a 27-year-old medical clinic employee in Patchogue, New York, to fraudulently enter at least 10 people into the New York State Immunization Information System database.

Prosecutors said Clifford, 31, sold about 250 cards via Instagram. Additional charges were also filed Monday against 15 people involved in the fake vaccination card scheme.

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance has called on Facebook, which owns Instagram, to do a better job of policing this kind of potentially deadly fraud.

Not surprisingly, the Zuckerberg empire claims to be on top of the matter but it didn’t remove Clifford’s account until August, The New York Times reported. But now Zuckerberg, Inc. promises to do better in the future.

Not a good combination': COVID-19 hospitalizations increase as nationwide nursing shortage strikes Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58)-- Two nationwide COVID-19 trends are hitting home. Wisconsin is experiencing a rise in hospitalizations, and struggling to find enough nurses to care for those patients.

"Increasing hospitalizations coupled with staffing shortages is not a good combination," Associate Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin Dr. Ben Weston said during Tuesday's Milwaukee County COVID-19 briefing.

Weston fears Milwaukee County is headed in a dangerous direction. There are 243 people in the hospital, the highest it's been since early January.

"We haven't reached a point where we're turning away patients," Weston said.

That might not be the case for long. About 85 percent of ICU beds are occupied in the Milwaukee area. Plus, there's not enough health care workers.
