Trump 'disrespectful' to PM and UK, says Jeremy Hunt

Source: bbc

Donald Trump has been "disrespectful" towards the prime minister and the UK, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said.

His comments come after President Trump called Sir Kim Darroch, the UK ambassador to the US, "a very stupid guy" amid a row over leaked emails.

He went on to criticise Theresa May over Brexit, saying she had ignored his advice and gone her "own foolish way".

On Sunday emails revealed the ambassador had called the Trump administration "clumsy and inept".

Meanwhile, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox's scheduled meeting with the US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in the US was cancelled on Tuesday.

Mr Hunt responded to Mr Trump's latest outburst by tweeting: "Friends speak frankly so I will: these comments are disrespectful and wrong to our prime minister and my country."

When Dear Leader #Trump says "Jump," @DOJ Bill Barr asks "How high?"

Tubby Barr may find out --may-that he can't jump too high.

Man, Barr proves his perfidy every day in every way:

Attorney General William Barr on Monday accused Democrats of trying to create a “public spectacle” by subpoenaing Special Counsel Robert Mueller to testify before Congress about the Russia investigation.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Barr said the Justice Department would support Mueller if he decides he “doesn’t want to subject himself” to congressional testimony. Barr also said the Justice Department would seek to block any attempt by Congress to subpoena members of the special counsel’s team.

There’s no indication that Mueller does not wish to appear before Congress on July 17. But he put lawmakers on notice that any testimony he gives will not go beyond his 448-page report that was released in April. At a news conference in May, Mueller said the team chose the words in the report carefully and that the work speaks for itself.

“I’m not sure what purpose is served by dragging him up there and trying to grill him,” Barr said. “I don’t think Mueller should be treated that way or subject himself to that, if he doesn’t want to.” ...............................

By JACKSON DIEHL | The Washington Post | Published: July 8, 2019

Once upon a time, there was a brutal and reckless dictator of an oil-rich Arab country who, despite his well-documented excesses, was stroked and supported by the United States and other Western governments. His crimes were terrible, went the rationale, but he was modernizing his country and he was holding the line against Islamist jihadism and Iran. Anyway, there was probably no alternative.

The ruler heard that message. He concluded that, as long as he kept supplying oil and opposing Iran, he was free to butcher his opponents and bully his neighbors.

His name, of course, was Saddam Hussein. The bet made on him by the United States and its allies directly led to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990, and from there to the “endless wars” in the Middle East that are now almost universally bemoaned by the West’s foreign policy establishment.

And yet, 30 years later, those mandarins and the politicians they report to are blindly repeating the mistake. They are saying they abhor the blatant crimes of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including the killing of Washington Post contributing columnist Jamal Khashoggi and the torture and imprisonment of women seeking greater rights. They see his bombing campaign in Yemen as a war-crime-ridden disaster..................................

Love it. Pelosi is spot on.

I just asked Pelosi about Barr's comments that Dems want to create a "spectacle" with Mueller. "I don't even want to address him. He has lied to Congress as the attorney general of the United States. He's lied under oath. I'm not speaking to anything more that he has to say."

House Committee to Issue Blitz of Subpoenas, Raising Heat on Trump

Source: nytimes

July 9, 2019

WASHINGTON — The House Judiciary Committee will vote this week to authorize a bevy of new subpoenas on the Trump administration’s practices of separating families from their children at the border and on President Trump’s possible obstruction of justice, summoning some of the biggest names to surface in Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation.

The votes, scheduled for Thursday, will jolt two of the Democrats’ highest-profile oversight investigations into Mr. Trump and his administration and are certain to further inflame relations with the White House.

Among the targets are Jeff Sessions, the former attorney general; Michael T. Flynn, the president’s first national security adviser; John F. Kelly, the former White House chief of staff; Rod J. Rosenstein, the former deputy attorney general who appointed Mr. Mueller; Corey R. Lewandowski, Mr. Trump’s former campaign manager, and David J. Pecker, who as the head of American Media took part in a hush money scheme.

Taking aim at the administration’s border policies, the committee will seek new authority that would allow the panel to subpoena current and former officials to answer questions and provide documents related to Mr. Trump’s “zero tolerance policy” — which separated children apprehended at the border from their families — and any talk of presidential pardons for Department of Homeland Security officials involved in implementing the policy.

“For months, we have held hearings and sent letters to the agencies of jurisdiction involved with implementing a catastrophic and inhumane family separation policy at the Southern border,” the committee’s chairman, Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York, said in a statement. “Many questions remain and it is past time for a full accounting of this policy and practice.”..........................................

"Trump aides so far are not bothered by Acosta's role in the controversial Epstein plea deal, but are aware of the headline risk." (CNN)

Thanks to some relentless Miami Herald reporting, Secretary of Labor Alex Acosta has been shown to favor a variety of interrelated areas of US policy on human trafficking as well as perhaps a role in prolonging the prosecuting of Jeffrey Epstein, now including charges in NY.

Does an Acosta resignation draw attention away from Trump’s continuing reign of error........................

'The next 72 hours are critical for Acosta'

Trump aides so far are not bothered by Acosta's role in the controversial Epstein plea deal, but are aware of the headline risk.

Updated 07/08/2019 05:47 PM EDT

White House officials are closely watching the coverage of Labor Secretary Alex Acosta’s past involvement as a prosecutor in billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s plea deal in 2008, concerned that the recent burst of negative publicity could harm him beyond repair, according to four people familiar with the situation.

“The next 72 hours are critical for Acosta,” said a former Trump adviser, who remains close to the White House. “This is a settled matter for people in the White House … but it’s usually the response that kills you.”

The expectation in the West Wing is that President Donald Trump is likely to give Acosta the benefit of the doubt because of the allegations of assault by women that the president says have been falsely made against him and his most recent nominee for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, according to the people.

Trump isn‘t likely to fire Acosta unless he remains a constant in the news, leading to more outrage by those who think Epstein, a billionaire who counts Trump and former President Bill Clinton as friends, was given a lenient sentence for his crimes. Some people have called for his resignation, but many Democrats and their allies, including the AFL-CIO, have stayed relatively quiet because they see Acosta’s tepid approach to deregulation as tolerable.

Far-Right Web Personalities Claim WH Invited Them To ‘Social Media Summit’

A bevy of far-right internet personalities has claimed in recent days to have received invitations to the White House’s “Social Media Summit” on Thursday, further blurring the line between the mainstream Republican Party and fringe figures that cater to its farthest edges.

One of the people who claims they’ve been invited to the event has published anti-Semitic cartoons. Another has promoted the bizarre and wide-ranging QAnon conspiracy theory. A third is a celebrated meme-r whose creations have been tweeted by President Trump.

The White House does not seem eager to confirm the invitees.

Declining to confirm an actual invite list, White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said in an email, “This event will bring together digital leaders for a robust conversation on the opportunities and challenges of today’s online environment.”

Yet so far, several people have claimed they received White House invites.

Perhaps most notably, the massively popular right-wing cartoonist Ben Garrison claimed on Twitter Friday to have been invited to attend. While most of Garrison’s cartoons are dense word clouds focused on the Democratic establishment, some have been described as anti-Semitic and xenophobic.......................

.......................Another right-wing personality who’s said he’s been to the White House was there just a few days ago.

The operators of the “@mad-liberals” and “@CarpeDonktum” accounts both claimed they were invited to the summit, and CarpeDonktum recently posted pictures of their Oval Office visit with Trump.....................

New poll, July 8: Biden Remains By Far the Strongest Candidate Against Trump

Biden Remains By Far the Strongest Candidate Against Trump

By Josh Marshall
July 8, 2019 10:49 am

When we think about politics all of us are prone to meld together things we support with things that are viable, possible, popular. With this in mind I want to flag to your attention one part of the WaPo/ABC news poll that came out over the weekend. One headline out of this poll is that Trump’s approval rating is the highest ever recorded for this particular poll. We shouldn’t draw too much from that data point since it’s only slightly higher than the average for this poll and to date other polls show no significant strengthening.

But I want to draw your attention to this finding.

I want to separate here what you may think of Joe Biden and his candidacy and fairly extensive data we have on his relative strength vs Trump. There are a lot of people out there insisting that Biden will be a general election trainwreck for the Democrats. He’s too old-fashioned, has too much baggage, is too indisciplined a campaigner, is too out of touch with the causes and issues that animate a younger and more diverse generation of voters. Each claim has a litany of evidence behind it. I mean, just a couple days ago he was saying he’d be open to renominating the 66 year old Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.

Many argue that nominating Biden would encourage third party runs of the Jill Stein or Ralph Nader variety which, as I’ve argued, is almost a prerequisite for Trump’s reelection. I worry about this a great deal. But look at the other/neither/don’t know number. These are pretty small differences. But at least this poll provides little evidence for this.......................

“Meritless.”

“Frivolous.”

A “conspiracy theory” that “hinges on wordplay.”

This is how the Department of Justice described the efforts by its legal foes to connect the Trump administration’s push to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census to the partisan motives of a deceased GOP operative.

But comments last week by President Trump suggest that his administration and the operative, GOP gerrymandering guru Thomas Hofeller, did in fact share a similar goal: a new method of redistricting that would exclude non-citizens from the count used to draw legislative districts.

Hofeller secretly studied the effect of such an overhaul — in an unpublished 2015 analysis that concluded that it would be “functionally unworkable” without a census citizenship question — and said it “would be advantageous to Republicans and Non-Hispanic Whites.”

The Department of Justice vehemently denied there was any connection between Hofeller’s memo and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’s decision last year to add the question, despite Hofeller being the first person to raise to the Trump transition team the issue of the census citizenship question......................................................

But on Friday, when asked why he was trying to re-add the question to the census, President Trump told reporters, “You need it for Congress, for districting.”...........
