Elections Democrats aim to take out Cruz in 2018 The 2018 map is so bad for the party that to win

Democrats face a grim Senate map in 2018. Their odds are so long that they must prevail in conservative Texas. http://politi.co/2nwYTs4

The road to a Democratic Senate majority in 2018 runs through Texas — yes, Texas.

Facing a grim midterm map, Democrats are desperately trying to put enough GOP-held seats in play to take advantage of Donald Trump’s unpopularity and carve a credible path back to Senate control. The odds are so long that Democrats must pin their hopes on taking out Ted Cruz in the reliably conservative bastion of Texas.

Their first ray of hope is the entry of three-term Rep. Beto O’Rourke — a 44-year-old former hard rock musician and internet entrepreneur who speaks fluent Spanish — into the race on Friday. Though Cruz is universally known, Democrats insist he’s not invincible, pointing to the first-term Republican’s poor polling numbers and prolonged focus on running for president.

...............................

For the first time in several election cycles, control of the Senate is not up for grabs barring a massive anti-Republican wave. Already facing a four-seat deficit, Democrats have to defend 25 seats, including five in conservative states that voted overwhelmingly for Trump last year and five more that he carried by a narrower margin.

The GOP, by contrast, has to protect just nine seats. ...............

..... Trump’s lawyers fought for the case to be thrown out, arguing that Trump intended no violence and that his statements were only directed at security personnel.

But the judge didn’t buy that.

“Presumably, if he had intended for protesters to be escorted out by security personnel, Trump would have instructed the intervening audience members to stop what they were doing, rather than offering guidance on how to go about it,” Hale wrote in his decision.

“(I)t is plausible that Trump’s direction to ‘get 'em out of here’ advocated the use of force...it was an order, an instruction, a command,” the judge added.........................

Watchdog groups ask ethics group to investigate Nunes

Source: The Hill

By Nikita Vladimirov - 03/31/17 11:19 PM EDT

Two political watchdog organizations are asking the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) to investigate whether the actions of Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) violate the House ethics rules.

"We request the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) to conduct a preliminary inquiry into whether Representative Devin Nunes, Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, disclosed classified information to the public on March 22, 2017 in violation of the House ethics rules," Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and Democracy 21 wrote in a letter to OCE dated March 28.

The specific rule mentioned in the letter mandates House members to "not disclose any classified information" unless "authorized by the House of Representatives or in accordance with its Rules."

Nunes announced to the press that he had obtained reports that showed that President Trump's transition team was incidentally surveilled by the intelligence community. He later said the information may have stemmed from a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant, raising questions about whether he had revealed confidential information.

Nunes did not greet the protesters and upon leaving slunk out the back way, of course.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Several hundred protesters greeted House intelligence committee chairman Devin Nunes (NOO'-nehs) on a visit to his home state of California.

Nunes spoke Friday to the Ag Lenders Society at a private gathering in Fresno. He did not speak to protesters or media and was ushered in and out of the building.

Nunes has been accused of being too close to President Donald Trump's administration while his committee is conducting an investigation into the Trump presidential campaign's possible contacts with Russia.

About 300 people protested on the sidewalk outside the event, which was closed to media.....................................

The orders affect trade policy
Trump later signed them

(CNN)President Donald Trump walked out of an executive order signing ceremony Friday -- without actually signing the orders.

During the signing ceremony, White House pool reporters asked Trump questions about his former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who has offered to testify on Russian involvement in the US election in return for immunity from prosecution.

The President ignored the questions and moved to another room, only to be chased by Vice President Mike Pence, who picked up the folders containing the two executive orders.

Trump later signed the pair of orders aimed at identifying and targeting foreign trade abuses, according to the White House, but behind closed doors.

Trump's love of getting even comes to Washington

"If they screw you, screw them back 10 times as hard," Trump has said
Trump's desire for revenge recently played out in public

Washington (CNN)Long before Donald Trump ever became a credible presidential candidate, let alone the commander in chief, the former reality TV star was guided by one animating principle: "If they screw you, screw them back 10 times as hard."

Trump's desire for revenge played out in public on Thursday when, in an effort to spook conservative members of his own party, the President lumped the Freedom Caucus -- a collection of conservative Republican lawmakers -- with Democrats and pledged to "fight them" in 2018.

Trump and his White House feel betrayed by the conservative Republicans. Many backed Trump early in the 2016 campaign and stood by him during some of the toughest trials of the campaign. But when it came to passing his first legislative goal -- health care reform -- the conservatives revolted en masse and killed the bill.
