Reps. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.) and Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) have tested positive for COVID-19, increasing the tally of lawmakers across the U.S. who have contracted the virus.

The big picture: The two announcements on Wednesday follow positive tests for Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.), Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.), Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) and Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) in the latest string of outbreaks.

The state of play: More than 25 members of Congress have tested positive for or were presumed to have COVID-19 since March, per GovTrack.

82 have quarantined or come into contact with someone with COVID-19.
The latest cases come amid increased scrutiny of government officials, some of whom have flouted their own issued guidelines.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi revised plans recently for an in-person dinner honoring newly elected Democratic members of Congress after facing backlash.

As hospitalizations rise, doctors struggle to admit patients to Wisconsin's field hospital

As hospitalizations rise, doctors struggle to admit patients to Wisconsin's field hospital

By Naomi Kowles Wednesday, November 18th 2020

MADISON, Wis. ......
.............

The number of COVID-19 patients across Wisconsin has nearly tripled since early October; the alternative care facility was opened to handle the surge when hospitalizations were still fewer than 900 across the state. On Tuesday, data from the Wisconsin Hospital Association dashboard showed 2,277 COVID-19 hospitalizations in Wisconsin.

..................... the facility has 530 beds with an expansion capacity of more than 700. Tuesday, just 23 patients were being treated there.

.................................p.

But few are sent to the field hospital. The challenge, doctors say, begins with the patients themselves. There’s uncertainty about how an alternative care facility functions, and for patients in Dane County or the surrounding area–it’s far from home.

...............................

Essentially, Dr. Pothof explained, convalescing patients aren’t yet ready to go home, but they’re not comfortable with the field hospital. And in the meantime, sicker patients need the care.

“They have a choice to say no,” a spokesperson for Meriter noted. Like UW Health, their recovering patients are declining the field hospital.

But doctors cite another concerning factor when determining whether patients would be eligible for the field hospital: most are just too sick. The facility is only equipped for low acuity care, and is primarily designed for health monitoring and support.

“You actually have to be fairly healthy to go to the field hospital. You can not be severely ill; you can not be requiring ICU level care to be transferred there,” Sauk Prairie Healthcare surgeon and chief innovation officer Dr. Nathan Grunewalk said. “It’s great that we have it; unfortunately, who’s appropriate for care there is somewhat limited.”......................................

Trump campaign plans to pay for recount in Wisconsin: report

Source: raw story

Published 1 min on November 18, 2020

By Matthew Chapman

On Wednesday, Fox News’ John Roberts reported that the Trump campaign plans to file for recount in Wisconsin.

According to Wisconsin law, the president’s campaign is obligated to pay for the recount itself, which will cost them almost $8 million. The deadline to request the recount is today, which has led to speculation over whether or not the campaign would decide to go through with it.

As of Wednesday, results show President-elect Joe Biden carrying the state of Wisconsin by just over 20,000 votes — the closest margin of the three Midwestern “blue wall” states he flipped back after Trump carried them in his 2016 upset, but a large enough lead that a recount is unlikely to change the result...................

Wisconsin reports 92 COVID-19 deaths, highest daily toll ever

Source: Post-Crescent

Wisconsin reported 92 deaths from the coronavirus Tuesday, its highest daily death toll ever and a grim marker of the state's worsening health crisis.

The state Department of Health Services on Tuesday reported 7,090 new cases. The overall coronavirus death toll rose to 2,741.

The 92 deaths reported Tuesday far outpaces the previous all-time high of 66 deaths in a day, set one week ago.

"Wisconsin is in a crisis," said Julie Willems Van Dijk, deputy secretary for the state Department of Health Services. "Cases are high and rising. Hospitalizations are high and rising. And COVID-19 deaths are high and rising."

As cases have surged in Wisconsin, intensive care units are filling up and deaths are climbing quickly. Hospitals across the state are at or near capacity and are facing widespread staffing shortages as hundreds of health care workers exposed or infected in the community are forced to quarantine at home.

Physicians at Advocate Aurora Health joined public health officials in calling for people to limit Thanksgiving dinners to people living in a household to help check the spread of the coronavirus throughout the state.

“Thanksgiving dinners have the potential to be super-spreader events,” said Robert Citronberg, a physician and executive medical director of Infectious Disease and Prevention at the health system. “It is so critically important that we do not that.

"The numbers are devastating right now," he said. “Our health care system cannot absorb the doubling or tripling of those numbers that might happen if we have many super-spreader events arising out of Thanksgiving,”

All of Wisconsin's 72 counties have concluded canvassing, giving Biden slightly more votes

All of Wisconsin's 72 counties have concluded canvassing ballots cast in the 2020 presidential election, and now the state awaits a decision from the Trump campaign on whether or not it will call for a recount.

Canvassing is an essential elections process that consists of confirming that all the ballots cast have been counted, and for the correct candidates.

The updated projected totals on Tuesday give two more votes to Joe Biden, and zero votes to President Donald Trump. During the canvassing process so far, Biden has gained a total of 211 votes, compared to Trump's 63 total votes.

......................

Regardless, some movers and shakers in the state have suggested otherwise. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) has called for an investigation into potential voter fraud, but also acknowledged last week that he thought it "unlikely" that the state would find enough evidence of fraud to change the results of the election.

President Trump's election campaign has said it will call for a recount in Wisconsin. The campaign can file for a recount in the state between now and 5 p.m. Wednesday. .........................

Georgia Senator David Perdue Is Terrified That Jon Ossoff Will Shred Him in Another Debate

Georgia Senator David Perdue Is Terrified That Jon Ossoff Will Shred Him in Another Debate
In a runoff election that could decide control of the Senate, the Republican incumbent is hiding from accountability for his dirty dealing.

..........................

Referring to complaints that Perdue engaged in self-serving stock trades early in the pandemic, when senators were being briefed on its potential impact and before the danger was widely understood, Ossoff said during an October 28 debate, “Perhaps Senator Perdue would have been able to respond properly to the Covid-19 pandemic if you hadn’t been fending off multiple federal investigations for insider trading. It’s not just that you’re a crook, senator. It’s that you’re attacking the health of the people that you represent. You did say Covid-19 was no deadlier than the flu. You did say there would be no significant uptick in cases. All the while, you were looking after your own assets and your own portfolio.”

Perdue was so overwhelmed by the criticism, and so ineffectual in responding to it, that a day later, his campaign announced that he would not attend a final scheduled debate with Ossoff. Instead, a Perdue aide offered this spin: “As lovely as another debate listening to Jon Ossoff lie to the people of Georgia sounds, Senator Perdue will not be participating in the WSB-TV debate but will instead join the 45th president, Donald J. Trump, for a huge Get-Out-The-Vote rally in Northwest Georgia.”

The decision to skip that last debate and tie the Trump and Perdue campaigns together for a big close did not end well. Trump narrowly lost Georgia to Democrat Joe Biden—becoming the first Republican presidential contender to lose the state since 1992. And Perdue, who had started the race as a prohibitive front-runner, fell below the 50 percent mark—barely finishing ahead of the Democrat, with 49.7 percent to 48 percent for Ossoff.

Now, Perdue is skipping another debate, and the Democratic challenger is skewering the Republican incumbent with a new line: “David Perdue isn’t just a crook—he’s a coward, too.”

Marc Elias, a top attorney for the Democratic Party who has spent decades defending voting rights, is calling on the Ethics Committee to investigate Senator Lindsey Graham.

The Georgia Secretary of State in a Monday interview with The Washington Post accused Graham of pressuring him to throw out what would be thousands of ballots from certain counties.

“This is both outrageous and should be investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee,” Elias said via Twitter, in response to Washington Post

Elias is not the only attorney calling for an investigation.

Here’s Kristen Clarke, the president and executive director of the National Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law:.................
