Biden clarifies stance on marijuana

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the sole top 2020 Democrat to oppose the federal legalization of marijuana, clarified his stance on the drug Monday.

Driving the news: Biden was criticized over the weekend for saying he opposes the federal legalization of marijuana because "there’s not nearly been enough evidence that has been acquired as to whether or not it is a gateway drug." He argued to leave it to the states, but he supports legalizing medical marijuana and does not believe possession of the drug should be a crime.

Marijuana legalization has been a near-universal 'yes' among 2020 Democrats.

Susan Collins loses League of Conservation Voters endorsement

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/11/14/1899418/-Susan-Collins-loses-League-of-Conservation-Voters-endorsement

Just two years ago, the League of Conservation Voters declared that Sen. Susan Collins, Republican from Maine, "is an extremely important ally in the fight to protect the environment and public health. […] Her leadership is more important now than ever, and we are grateful that she continues to stand up to big polluters by supporting climate action and protections for the air we breathe, the water we drink and the lands we cherish."

What a difference two years, two new Supreme Court justices, and countless Senate votes backing Donald Trump make. This time around, the LCV is endorsing Democratic candidate Sara Gideon, one of a handful of challengers to Collins. "From her time as a town councilor to her tenure as Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, Speaker Gideon has been a leader fighting the climate crisis, promoting clean energy, & banning offshore drilling in Maine," LCV tweeted in its announcement.

In its endorsements, the LCV says that it seeks to "elect environmental champions who will address the climate crisis and advance a more equitable clean energy future." Beyond that, though, "LCV Action Fund understands the critical importance of a representative democracy and is committed to endorsing candidates that are reflective of the diverse communities and identities across the country."

Sorry, Susan Collins. That's just not you anymore. Gideon has also nabbed the endorsement of women's rights groups NARAL Pro-Choice America and EMILY's List. That means Planned Parenthood Action Fund is sitting on the fence by itself in not announcing an endorsement yet in Maine..........

It’s a good bet he White House is not telling the truth when it claims Trump was at Walter Reed “to begin portions of his routine annual physical exam.” We know this because — well, because those people lie about pretty much everything.

President Donald Trump on Sunday retweeted a message from his son Eric touting the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. The double promotion with White House clout occurred at the same time that the Trump family is slamming Hunter Biden for allegedly profiting from father Joe Biden’s role as vice president by serving on the board of a Ukrainian energy company.

The retweet infuriated Walter Shaub, former head of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics for former President Barack Obama and Trump. “Definitely not trying to profit off the presidency at all,” he noted sarcastically.

The book, "Warning' Tells Us Trump Is Stupid, Crazy -- And Dangerous

I most definitely am going to read this book!

‘A Warning’ Tells Us Trump Is Stupid, Crazy — And Dangerous

David Cay Johnston November 16, 2019

At DCReport we’ve scored an advance copy of the most anticipated book of the year, “A Warning” by “Anonymous, A Senior Trump Administration Official.” This book, which goes on sale Nov. 19, is as important, fascinating and easy to read as any book in our times.

The scariest line comes on Page 238, where the author identifies the most unwelcome visitor to the Trump White House—reason.

Crazy anecdote, by idiotic tirade, by telling detail gathered from behind closed doors at the White House, the author makes clear that this book is a work of duty by someone who loves America. This is someone who has dedicated their life to our safety and well-being and is certain that all we hold dear is in grave danger.

Crazy anecdote, by idiotic tirade, by telling detail, Anonymous makes clear that this book is a work of duty by someone who loves America.

“He wants to do what he wants to do, consequences be damned,” Anonymous writes. Trump is “like a 12-year-old in an air traffic control tower, pushing the buttons of government indiscriminately, indifferent to the planes skidding across the runway and the flights frantically diverted away.”
Know Nothing

Trump blows off intelligence assessments because he clearly lacks the intellectual capacity to understand them, even though he claims to be the world’s top expert on what, by my count, are 22 subjects.
When Trump tries to speak on many of these subjects he fell flat because, in reality, he knows nothing about Middle East politics, military strategy, taxes or law.

He carelessly reveals national security secrets that make allies fearful of sharing intelligence with Washington, and he puts the lives of our spies in danger. And in the Oval Office, he crudely and angrily dismisses anyone who speaks in depth or with nuance while also declaring his complete trust in whatever Vladimir Putin tells him......................

GOP Sen. Ron Johnson: Whistleblower 'Weakened' U.S.-Ukraine Relationship

Source: huff post

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on Sunday accused the whistleblower who filed a complaint regarding President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine of weakening the United States’ relationship with the Eastern European country.

The whistleblower, reportedly a CIA analyst formerly detailed to the White House, has alleged that Trump used military aid as leverage in his efforts to get Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden. His complaint is the subject of the House’s ongoing impeachment inquiry into the president.

But Johnson, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, blamed the whistleblower ― not Trump and his alleged pressure campaign ― for any strain on U.S.-Ukraine relations during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“One thing that I want to point out is the damage that’s being done to our country through this entire impeachment process,” Johnson said.....................................

We'll be measuring sea level rise in feet, not inches Editorial

As great minds have told us--#globalwarming is here! Now!

We’ll be measuring sea level rise in feet, not inches | Editorial
The real-world impacts of climate change are accelerating for us in Tampa Bay.

https://www.tampabay.com/opinion/2019/11/15/well-be-measuring-sea-level-rise-in-feet-not-inches-editorial/

Using a tool provided by NOAA, this map shows what parts of the Tampa Bay region would be underwater if sea levels rose 8 feet, which could happen by 2100. [NOAA]

Take out a 30-year mortgage on a house in the Tampa Bay area, and by the time it is paid off the sea level will have likely risen 1 or even 2 feet, according to the Tampa Bay Climate Science Advisory Panel. Climate change is no abstract concept. It is here, it is getting worse and it’s coming harder and faster than scientists expected even a few years ago. The only uncertainty now is just how bad it will get and when. Those who fail to act -- or worse, continue to deny it -- will have to answer to their children and grandchildren, who will be forced to live with the effects of their elders’ folly.

A recent poll of Floridians by Florida Atlantic University captures this new reality, with 68 percent agreeing that climate change “has them concerned about the well-being of future generations in Florida." Just 28 percent said government is doing enough to address it. Even 44 percent of Florida Republicans now agree that climate change is real and primarily caused by human activities. That should wake up politicians in Washington and Tallahassee.

via GIPHY

It was singularly unhelpful for President Donald Trump to formally announce this month that the United States is abandoning the Paris Accords, leaving nearly 200 other nations to figure out how to cut greenhouse emissions without the support of the world’s largest economy, as Trump continues to favor fossil fuels over renewable energy and deny that climate change is even a worry. Until national leadership changes, Florida and the Tampa Bay region are effectively on their own. Meanwhile, sunny day flooding will become more common, and hurricanes will become more powerful as their storm surges pile walls of water on to already elevated sea levels. It’s been only a year since Hurricane Michael blew up into a Category 5 as it slammed the Panhandle, a hurricane that wasn’t supposed to be able to grow in strength so quickly.

For a long time, climate reports focused on moderate estimates of the effects of climate change. But now researchers are discovering that the effects are snowballing, that the seas aren’t just rising but are rising at a faster rate, that the climate isn’t just warming but it’s doing so more quickly. Additional effects such as the magnifying impacts of ice sheet instabilities are adding new layers of worry to the science. Predictions that seemed extreme not long ago are coming to pass, and the new normal is decidedly abnormal. As the science becomes more precise and more sophisticated, the numbers are bigger and more worrisome, and the timeline for action grows shorter.................

Nancy Pelosi: Trump's Actions 'So Much Worse' That What Nixon Did

Source: huff post

POLITICS 11/17/2019 12:50 pm ET Updated 1 hour ago

The House speaker suggested former President Richard Nixon at least “cared about the country enough” to resign.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine are “so much worse” than former President Richard Nixon’s actions in the Watergate scandal, which prompted his resignation from office.

Pelosi, during an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation” that aired Sunday, discussed the House’s ongoing impeachment inquiry that focuses on Trump’s efforts to get Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden.

Several State Department officials have testified that Trump used military aid as leverage in his efforts to get Ukraine to investigate Biden. Pelosi told CBS that “of course” there’s a connection between the whistleblower filing his complaint and Trump eventually releasing the congressionally approved aid.

She said Trump has “every opportunity to make his case” before House impeachment investigators, including testifying before the House Intelligence Committee or answering questions in writing. .........................................

Pete Buttigieg Says Trump’s War Crime Pardons ‘Dishonor’ Military
“There’s nothing pro-military about overruling our military justice system,” said the Democratic presidential candidate.

The White House said in a statement released Friday that the military justice system “helps ensure good order and discipline,” but that Trump had the “authority to offer second chances” to soldiers.

Trump granted full pardons on Friday to former Army 1st Lt. Clint Lorance and Maj. Matthew Golsteyn, despite a reported request from Defense Secretary Mark Esper not to interfere in the military justice system. Trump also restored Navy SEAL Ed Gallagher’s rank to chief petty officer.

Lorance was found guilty of second-degree murder for ordering his soldiers to fire on three men in Afghanistan in 2008 and was serving a 19-year sentence at the penitentiary at Fort Leavenworth. Golsteyn, a Green Beret team leader, was facing murder charges for killing an unarmed Afghan suspected of being a Taliban bomb-maker...............................................
