College gymnast Melanie Coleman dies after a fall on the uneven bars

I watch these young women and men perform when I can. Such beautiful moves.---but I have always clinged at times also.

But I also have a young niece who performed all through HS and part of college and just recently gave it up---she had sustained another injury. I am glad she did give it up.

DC bars to open early for impeachment mania

Source: the Hill

By Judy Kurtz - 11/12/19 04:57 PM EST

Restaurant and bar owners in Washington are aiming to cash in on impeachment in a decidedly #thistown way, opening their doors early so the city's politically minded revelers can imbibe as they take in the House's first televised hearings.

The House impeachment inquiry into President Trump's dealings with Ukraine is poised to enter a new phase on Wednesday, with public hearings scheduled in the Intelligence Committee, with more set for Friday.

Duffy's Irish Pub, in the District's H Street NE neighborhood, will feature what it's dubbing "happy hearing hours," with $5 rail drinks and $2 off all drafts and wine during all impeachment hearings. The watering hole — which boasts eight large, flat-screen TVs with a "stadium sound" system — says it's also whipping up a pair of impeachment beverages to mark the occasion. Bartenders will be serving a "Subpoena Colada" and a drink called "James and the Giant Impeachment."

The eatery isn't the only place prepping for all the impeachment action in the House.

Union Pub says it will be open for business at 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, just 10 minutes before the hearing is scheduled to begin. The Capitol Hill tavern will be showing everything impeachment on all its TVs and will be featuring a surplus of specials..................................................

Try Not to Laugh at Tulsi Gabbard's Letter to Hillary Clinton

Since it seemed to be Family Day in the shebeen on Monday, I think it was probably appropriate for me to refer back to my grandmother’s perennial question for anyone who seemed to be overly impressed with themselves.
.................................................

Apparently, Rep. Six Percent was taken quite aback by Hillary Rodham Clinton’s intimation that Gabbard might have some fans among the Volga Bagmen. So Gabbard’s campaign decided to make...demands. Goddamn, this is hilarious.

In light of this, we demand that you immediately hold a press conference to verbally retract -- in full -- your comments. We also demand that you immediately publish this full and fair retraction on the account @HillaryClinton and distribute it to CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post
.

Try not to fall down laughing at this next part. (My quote marks):

“On October 17, 2019, I made certain statements about Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. Among other things, I accused her of being a Russian asset and that Russia was grooming her to be a third-party candidate.

“I was wrong. I never should have made these remarks, and I apologize. I did not have any basis for making the statements. I acknowledge my grave mistake and error in judgment in this matter.

“I support and admire the work that Congresswoman Gabbard has done and will continue to do in serving our country.”

Why don’t they suggest HRC pass the time by playing a little Solitaire?

Lawyers representing Hawaii Rep. and 2020 Democratic presidential contender Tulsi Gabbard wrote a letter to former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton on Monday, demanding that she retract a statement saying that Republicans were grooming a female 2020 candidate.

Initially, there was confusion after Clinton's comments, made on the "Campaign HQ" podcast weeks ago, were taken out of context when listeners and reporters thought Clinton said Russia, not Republicans, was grooming a 2020 candidate for a third-party run.

When asked for comment at the time, a Clinton spokesman said, “if the nesting doll fits.”

Gabbard latched onto Clinton’s comments, and is now calling them defamatory. The Clinton team later worked to clarify that she was talking about Republicans grooming a candidate for a third-party run.............................................................................

How the U.S. betrayed the Marshall Islands, kindling the next nuclear disaster

How the U.S. betrayed the Marshall Islands, kindling the next nuclear disaster

Nov. 10, 2019 | REPORTING FROM MAJURO, MARSHALL ISLANDS

Five thousand miles west of Los Angeles and 500 miles north of the equator, on a far-flung spit of white coral sand in the central Pacific, a massive, aging and weathered concrete dome bobs up and down with the tide.

Here in the Marshall Islands, Runit Dome holds more than 3.1 million cubic feet — or 35 Olympic-sized swimming pools — of U.S.-produced radioactive soil and debris, including lethal amounts of plutonium. Nowhere else has the United States saddled another country with so much of its nuclear waste, a product of its Cold War atomic testing program.

Between 1946 and 1958, the United States detonated 67 nuclear bombs on, in and above the Marshall Islands — vaporizing whole islands, carving craters into its shallow lagoons and exiling hundreds of people from their homes.

U.S. authorities later cleaned up contaminated soil on Enewetak Atoll, where the United States not only detonated the bulk of its weapons tests but, as The Times has learned, also conducted a dozen biological weapons tests and dumped 130 tons of soil from an irradiated Nevada testing site. It then deposited the atoll’s most lethal debris and soil into the dome.

Now the concrete coffin, which locals call “the Tomb,” is at risk of collapsing from rising seas and other effects of climate change. Tides are creeping up its sides, advancing higher every year as distant glaciers melt and ocean waters rise.

Officials in the Marshall Islands have lobbied the U.S. government for help, but American officials have declined, saying the dome is on Marshallese land and therefore the responsibility of the Marshallese government.

“I’m like, how can it [the dome] be ours?” Hilda Heine, the president of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, said in an interview in her presidential office in September. “We don’t want it. We didn’t build it. The garbage inside is not ours. It’s theirs.”

To many in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Runit Dome is the most visible manifestation of the United States’ nuclear legacy, a symbol of the sacrifices the Marshallese made for U.S. security, and the broken promises they received in return.

They blame the United States and other industrialized countries for global climate change and sea level rise, which threaten to submerge vast swaths of this island nation’s 29 low-lying atolls.

“More than any other place, the Marshall Islands is a victim of the two greatest threats facing humanity — nuclear weapons and climate change,” said Michael Gerrard, a legal scholar at Columbia University’s law school. “The United States is entirely responsible for the nuclear testing there, and its emissions have contributed more to climate change than those from any other country.”

Over the last 15 months, a reporting team from the Los Angeles Times and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism made five trips to the Marshall Islands, where they documented extensive coral bleaching, fish kills and algae blooms — as well as major disease outbreaks, including the nation’s largest recorded epidemic of dengue fever. They interviewed folk singers who lost their voices to thyroid cancers and spent time in Arkansas, Washington and Oregon, where tens of thousands of Marshallese have migrated to escape poverty and an uncertain future.

Marshallese leaders acknowledge that America doesn’t bear full responsibility for their nation’s distress. But they say the United States has failed to take ownership of the environmental catastrophe it left behind, and they claim U.S. authorities have repeatedly deceived them about the magnitude and extent of that devastation................................

More than 40 years ago, U.S. authorities buried plutonium and other waste from nuclear testing in an unlined bomb crater on Runit Island and encapsulated it with concrete. The so-called Tomb, which is in Enewetak Atoll, now bobs with the tide, sucking in and flushing out radioactive water into nearby coral reefs, contaminating marine life.

DACA IS UP AT THE SUPREME COURT TODAY … SCOTUS
is hearing arguments in a group of cases this morning that could decide the fate of the Obama-era program, which was put in place in 2012 over the objection of Republicans, who have called it an illegal use of executive power. Supporters of the policy -- formally known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals -- say it merely codified the president’s existing power to set enforcement priorities. Either way, the fate of some 700,000 young people hangs in the balance, depending on how the court rules. We’ll get some clues today.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP has said that he would take action of some sort if the Supreme Court confirms that DACA is an improper use of power.

HOUSTON CHRONICLE:
“Trump’s decision to end DACA faces Supreme Court scrutiny,” by Lomi Kriel: “Diana Platas feels like everything in her life is at stake, riding on a politically charged debate about to play out more than 1,200 miles away.

“The 22-year-old is studying to get into law school and dreams of becoming an immigration attorney. But she doesn’t know whether a year from now she’ll be able to work or face deportation to Mexico, a country she hasn’t lived in since her parents brought her here illegally when she was 2. …

“The case, one of the most important of the justices’ term, will help define the scope of presidential powers over immigration. It also is seen as a test of Chief Justice John Roberts, who has lamented the politicization of the court and appeared reluctant to take on the DACA case, waiting until the last moment to do so.

“A majority of justices have consistently agreed that Trump has expansive latitude on immigration, green-lighting his travel ban preventing citizens of several Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States and declining to halt a policy ending asylum at the southern border...............................

“But in a 5-4 majority opinion, Roberts recently blocked the administration from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census — seen by some as an attempt to suppress the participation of immigrant-heavy communities — by arguing that it had done so improperly, which is also at issue in the government’s termination of DACA.

“Whatever the justices decide will have tremendous impact on the lives of more than 700,000 young people known as ‘Dreamers’ who are enrolled in the program, including about 109,000 in Texas. To qualify, they had to fulfill several requirements, such as proving they came here before they turned 16, graduated from high school or had served in the military, and had committed no serious crimes. The renewable two-year status does not provide a path to citizenship.” Houston Chronicle

-- SWAMP WATCH: It’s worth noting the case has produced some interesting bedfellows. Veteran GOP lawyer TED OLSEN is arguing this case on behalf of the DACA plaintiffs. And big business groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers and others have signed an amicus brief supporting DACA.
