Stand with Rep. Cummings: Investigate Trump's massive web of potential corruption

Petition to House Oversight Committee Chair Jason Chaffetz:
"Immediately investigate President-elect Donald Trump’s financial arrangements to ensure he does not have any actual or perceived conflicts of interest and he and his advisors comply with all legal and regulatory ethical requirements when he assumes the presidency."

Dear xxxxxxxxxxxxx,

Stand with Rep. Cummings: Investigate Trump's massive web of potential corruption

Donald Trump is a lifelong scam artist who has used his fame to swindle people out of their hard-earned money. Now, he appears to be planning to use the presidency of the United States to line his own pocket – putting all of us at risk.

No one knows the full extent of Trump’s foreign financial and business entanglements because of his unprecedented secrecy and refusal to release his tax returns. Government ethics experts have already said Trump is poised to violate the Constitution by personally profiting from the presidency. On top of it all, we still do not know whether he is indebted to foreign interests that would give them influence over the commander in chief.1,2,3

For years, House Republicans spent millions investigating Sec. Hillary Clinton in what one Republican leader later admitted was an attempt to score partisan points.4 Now, Rep. Elijah Cummings is calling on the Republican chair of the House Oversight Committee to investigate the real, dangerous and growing potential corruption of a Trump presidency.

Stand with Rep. Cummings: Investigate Trump's massive web of potential corruption. Click here to sign the petition.

Trump’s massive web of potential corruption is on a never-before-seen scale. Past presidents have sold assets and placed money and investments in blind trusts. Trump, by contrast, claims to be handing over his businesses to his children. But in the days since the election, he has continued pushing his own financial interests. Because he is still hiding the full extent of his business entanglements, we have no way of knowing if he is under the thumb of foreign interests, whether his business interests in the Middle East or other countries run counter to American foreign policy or whether he is merely using the presidency to enrich himself.5,6

Here are the examples of potential corruption that have emerged just since Nov. 8 ,8,9

Trump’s children have a role in the presidential transition, despite claims that they will take over the Trump business from their father.
Ivanka Trump attended a meeting with the Japanese prime minister and reportedly joined a phone call between her father and the president of Argentina.
A long-stalled Trump project in Argentina mysteriously got the green light to move forward days after that phone call.
Trump reportedly used his meeting with British politicians to push them to block offshore wind farms that he believes will sully the view from his Scotland golf courses.
Indian real estate developers bragged about meeting with Trump post-election and expanding their work with him now that he has the power of the presidency.
Trump paid $25 million to settle charges that he defrauded students of Trump University.
News broke that immediately before the election Trump launched eight mysterious companies to build luxury real estate projects in Saudi Arabia.
Foreign diplomats told The Washington Post that they would deliberately book rooms at Trump’s Washington, D.C. hotel in order to curry favor with the president
Government ethics experts who served under Republican and Democratic presidents have agreed that Trump’s potential conflicts of interest might be unconstitutional
The U.S. Secret Service might pay millions of dollars to rent two floors in Trump Tower to protect him and his family, with Trump pocketing the proceeds.
Trump praised his Turkish business partner, who had butted heads with Turkey’s government, in a phone call with autocratic Turkish President Erdogan.

Jason Chaffetz, the Republican chair of the House Oversight Committee, is no diehard Trump fan and once refused to endorse or defend him.8 After spending untold hours investigating Clinton’s non-scandals, he owes it to the American public to investigate naked conflicts of interest emerging in the Trump administration. We need to help Rep. Cummings build the public pressure on Chaffetz to investigate potential conflicts of interest or outright corruption.

Stand with Rep. Cummings: Investigate Trump's massive web of potential corruption. Click here to sign the petition.

The greatest threat from Trump will continue to be persecution and the climate of hate directed at Muslims, the undocumented, people of color, immigrants, and women. It is becoming even clearer that Trump’s strategy is to divide the American people and scapegoat these groups while enriching himself and his Wall Street friends. A true progressive response to the Trump regime will unconditionally resist his bigoted and racist policies while exposing the way he serves the powerful and privileged.

Because the president is not subject to federal conflict-of-interest laws, the House Oversight Committee plays a crucial role in standing up to Trump.9 Progressive champions like Sen. Elizabeth Warren have called for investigation, and with Rep. Elijah Cummings is already showing what determined leadership looks like, we need to stand with him.

Retired Coal Miners Losing Their Safety Net

The troubled coal industry, which stirred such great political concern during the presidential campaign, is about to take on a decidedly human dimension in the Senate. A bipartisan push is underway there to rescue the failing pension and health benefits of thousands of retired union coal miners. Their benefit plans have become severely underfunded during the industry’s downturn, as coal companies declare bankruptcy and renege on obligations to workers at a time when there are fewer young miners to contribute support.

One by one, hard-pressed coal companies have been bailing out on contract promises. The latest, Patriot Coal’s benefit fund, told 12,500 retirees last month that their health coverage will stop on Dec. 31. More than 10,000 other retired workers face similar cutoffs over the next year, according to the Senate sponsors of an emergency rescue plan. It would tap into funds from an existing mine cleanup program in order to bolster union health and retirement plans with an estimated contribution of $220 million a year...............

House Democrats demand Chaffetz probe Trumps finances

Source: washington post

By Mike DeBonis November 28 at 3:16 PM

Democrats on Monday made their strongest call to date for a congressional investigation into President-elect Donald Trump’s business entanglements and possible conflicts of interest, asking the GOP’s top House investigator to launch a formal probe.

Seventeen Democratic members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee called on the panel’s chairman, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) to “begin reviewing [Trump’s] financial arrangements in order to identify and protect against conflicts of interest.” The demand, in a seven-page letter, comes two weeks after the committee’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), made a similar request to Chaffetz.
................

“You have the authority to launch a committee investigation, and we are calling on you to use that power now,” Cummings and 16 other Democrats wrote. “You acted with unprecedented urgency to hold ‘emergency’ hearings and issue multiple unilateral subpoenas to investigate [Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton] before the election. We ask that you show the same sense of urgency now.”

......................................

Before Trump’s win on Nov. 8, Chaffetz had pledged to continue vigorous investigating of Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state from 2009 to 2013. Afterward, he said the email investigation would continue. “I still have a duty and obligation to get to the truth about one of the largest breaches of security at the State Department,” he said on Nov. 9.

There was blood everywhere: Trump supporter arrested after attacking gay men at Sydney McDonal

.................The two men who were attacked, Sam and Andrew, told the Star Observer that they were attacked by a supporter of President-elect Donald Trump while waiting in line at the fast food chain.

“He was saying things like how white men rule now that Trump has won,” Sam said. “I was horrified. ..................................

The man was fired up over the comment, and started shouting, “Trump’s won, straight white men rule!”

Friends of the Trump supporter reportedly dragged him out of the restaurant; however, he then remained outside and waited for Sam and Andrew to leave the McDonald’s.

“He hit me on the head,” Sam said. “And because I’m a pretty big guy, I went down hard — immediately there was blood everywhere. He kept mouthing off, but when he hit my head things went a bit blurry from that point.”.....................

Trump supporters in-flight rant against Hillary b*tches earns him a lifetime ban from Delta Air

Source: raw story

28 Nov 2016 at 13:05 ET

.....................The video, which quickly went viral, showed the man standing up in the aisle and chastising “Hillary b*tches” for not supporting his preferred candidate. And now it seems this passenger is about to get his just desserts — in the form of a lifetime ban from the airline.

CNBC’s Steve Kopack has posted an internal memo sent out by Delta CEO Ed Bastian that praises the airline crew’s response to the incident and rips the passenger for his rude behavior.

“This individual displayed behavior that was loud, rude, and disrespectful to his fellow customers,” Bastian wrote to employees. “He will never again be allowed on a Delta plane.”

Bastian said that Trump’s rise has generated “heightened tension” in our society, while also stressing that “now more than ever we must require civility on our planes.” He also said he would offer customers on the flight a full refund to compensate them for the obnoxiousness they had to endure at the hands of a Trump fan.

Wisconsin officials OK speedy recount, defend tally

By Laura Jarrett and Tom LoBianco, CNN

Updated 1:46 PM ET, Mon November 28, 2016

Madison, Wisconsin (CNN)Wisconsin election officials pledged Monday they would oversee a fast and fair recount of the presidential vote there, as they race to beat a federal deadline for getting it done, but they declined a request to conduct the new tally by hand.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission signed off on a breakneck pace that would have local officials coordinating the recount -- which was sought by the Green Party -- with them this week and starting the actual recount near the end of the week. State officials must have their new tally completed by December 13, according to federal law.

Former Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein also announced Monday that her supporters had filed a legal petition on behalf of 100 voters in Pennsylvania seeking a recount in that state.

"After a presidential election tarnished by the use of outdated and unreliable machines and accusations of irregularities and hacks, people of all political persuasions are asking if our election results are reliable. We must recount the votes so we can build trust in our election system," Stein said in a statement.
In Wisconsin, the election panel shot down a request from Stein that the ballots be counted by hand, although the Green Party leader intends to go to court to override that decision.

President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday made the astonishing claim that “millions of people who voted illegally” contributed to opponent Hillary Clinton’s victory in the popular vote, following a campaign based largely on spreading conspiracy theories and claiming that the election was “rigged” against him.

Trump’s latest lie seems to have originated from the conservative conspiracy website Infowars, which published an article claiming that Trump actually won the popular vote because “three million votes in the U.S. presidential election were cast by illegal aliens.”
