Valley View school board candidate reportedly suffered skull fracture in fight at polls

A Valley View school board candidate was transported to a Corpus Christi hospital after a fight broke out at a polling site Sunday afternoon.

Details about the bloody beating remained unclear as of press time Sunday night. Pharr police responded to the incident, but did not return calls for comment.

Photos of Prisciliano “J.R.” Treviño showing an injury to his face began appearing on social media shortly after the fight. Blood can be seen running across his face from a cut to the left brow and a swollen eye. {photo at link}

Multiple sources said Treviño was allegedly “mouthing off” to a voter when the fight broke out between the candidate and a school bus driver. Accounts of what transpired between them varied depending on political affiliation.

El Paso hospital suggests other hospitals for rape kit exams

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — An El Paso nonprofit that helps sexual assault victims says about 15 victims have told them they were turned away while seeking a rape kit exam at a local hospital.

The hospital's officials say they have just been providing victims with the option of going to facilities better equipped to work with such patients.

"The victims go to the hospital, get admitted into the (emergency room) to get checked, and when it comes down to doing the actual exam, they are told that the nurses are not trained or that they don't have the rape kit test, a forensic exam," Virginia Rueda, sexual assault services coordinator for the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence told the El Paso Times (http://bit.ly/2eovsDX ). She says the victims are told to go to another hospital and are discharged.

State law mandates that all hospitals with emergency rooms provide basic training for nurses to administer a rape kit, a sexual assault forensic exam that is provided to law enforcement.

Dispute with insurance bond company and Robstown ISD to go to trial

A bond insurance company filed suit against Robstown ISD in June alleging the district added to a project upgrading Robstown High School and overpayed a construction company more than $1.5 million, according to court documents.

The Hanover Insurance Group, based in Massachusetts, is seeking to be discharged from any liability on its performance bond issued for upgrades to Robstown High School. The project was being executed by construction company Texas Descon, L.P., which voluntarily defaulted on the project last year because of “financial difficulties,” according to court documents.

Hanover claims the district expanded the project’s scope by about $3 million after the company defaulted on the project, according to court documents.

“The district is now seeking a project that has more than 180 pages of plans, the majority of which significantly alter the original design of the project bid by Descon in October 2014,” according to the documents.

It's the second time in less than a week that I've seen this insurance company initiate legal action. This seems aggressive for a small insurer like Hanover. The earlier thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1077715 .

U.S. Rep Joaquín Castro speaks at local Clinton rally in Edinburg

EDINBURG — When U.S. Rep. Joaquín Castro stepped onto a stage under a blue-and-white-striped tent during a rally for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, a crowd of more than 100 locals went wild.

“Don’t let anybody ever say that the (Rio Grande) Valley does not vote, because you all have been showing up, turning out to vote since it started,” said Castro, who represents Texas’ 20th Congressional District from his hometown of San Antonio.

Every sentence he spoke was punctuated with cheers, shouts and calls of “Never Trump!” or “Hillary!” He mentioned Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during his speech, which lasted about six minutes, by recalling when the New York businessman said Mexican immigrants are criminals during the announcement of his candidacy last year.

“I heard that as … a grandson of a woman who came here when she was 6 years old,” he said. “My grandmother came here from Coahuila, Mexico. My grandmother was not a murderer or a rapist; she was an orphan.”

Sheriff: Bus dragged Texas State student from DFW for 500 feet

Miss Taylor was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority at Texas State. Her body was discovered under a shuttle bus near Martindale, Texas.

SAN MARCOS -- A 20-year-old Texas State University student from Burleson who was found dead beneath a shuttle bus Saturday had been dragged under the bus for about 500 feet, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Department announced Monday.

Jordin Taylor’s body was found Saturday afternoon at Cool River Ranch, a music and river tubing venue, according to Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke.

“The bus had developed mechanical problems the night before,” Zwicke said. “When they went back on Saturday to fix it, they found the body.”

Taylor somehow came in contact with the bus while attending a fraternity party Friday night at the location, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release Monday.

Rick Perry encouraged Michael McCaul to take on Ted Cruz

In recent weeks, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul has said many people have encouraged him to challenge U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2018 Republican primary.

It turns out one of those people may have been Rick Perry.

The former governor this summer encouraged McCaul, an Austin Republican, to run for the Senate seat, after Cruz famously declined to endorse Donald Trump in a primetime speech at the Republican National Convention, according to GOP sources who talked to the Texas Tribune.

Perry campaigned for Cruz during the presidential primaries after Perry ended his own White House run. He later endorsed Trump after Cruz dropped out.

Gov. Abbott on education special session: Nope

Gov. Greg Abbott said 140 days is plenty of time for lawmakers to do the business of Texas, and he's not fond of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's suggestion of a special legislative session to fix school funding.

"Texans don't want a full-time legislature, they want a legislature that can get their work done and then go home," Abbott spokesman John Wittman said in an email.

Patrick told the Midland Reporter-Telegram this weekend that lawmakers won't have time to fix public school funding during the regular legislative session, which begins in January. The governor, he said, would have to call a special 30-day additional session to deal with that issue.

"If the governor is willing, I am willing to address it in a special session," Patrick said. "We can't continue the way we have been going. ... The best way to handle it is to fix it once and for all."

Arlington mayor rips opponents of new Rangers $1 billion stadium in secret audio

Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams cast opponents of a $1 billion stadium for the Texas Rangers as "angry" and "misdirected" and people you wouldn't trust to babysit.

Williams made the remarks Friday during a meeting with prominent business leaders. An audio tape of the remarks, which were recorded secretly, was sent to The Dallas Morning News on Monday by the anti-stadium group, Save Our Stadium.

"A lot of these folks, they don't have the facts right," Williams said on the recording. "Either that or they do not have the intelligence there to be able to translate that we're investing money in the Entertainment District to make money."

Faith Bussey, one of the leaders of the anti-stadium campaign, released a written statement along with the audio.

Political signs were 'getting out of hand,' PennDOT says

If you're wondering where you can stake some last-minute election signs, you probably want to avoid state highways.

PennDOT workers took down signs last Thursday because they were becoming a safety issue, said spokesman Greg Penny. In Cumberland and Dauphin counties, between 100-200 signs each were removed, he said, adding that none had been removed prior to that day.

"This is not the first election this is a problem," Penny said. "For us, the over-riding thing is safety...We try to discourage them along state highways and expressways."

After having some of her signs removed by PennDOT Thursday, Jody Rebarchak, Democratic candidate in the 104th District, questioned whether PennDOT again took about 40 of her signs down again Sunday night, including some on Front Street.

Calling boss a 'little b***h' costs fired woman her unemployment comp

It is always wise to mind your tongue when talking to your boss.

Dominique Battle didn't do that - in fact she told her supervisor he was "being a little b***h" - and that comment is costing her.

First off, the Luzerne County woman was fired from her job as a cashier. And now, a Commonwealth Court panel has ruled that she isn't eligible for unemployment compensation.

Senior Judge Rochelle S. Friedman wrote in the state court's recent opinion that Battle had disciplinary issues even before her fateful outburst at P&R Discounts on Jan. 3. In fact, her boss had suspended her for not returning to work that day.
