Jilly_in_VA's JournalQAnon Thinks Kirstie Alley Was Murdered Because She Was an Anti-vaxxer
QAnon conspiracists were quick to claim that Cheers actor Kirstie Alley on Monday was possibly murdered because of her outspoken criticism of the COVID-19 vaccines. That, or she was forcibly given one and it killed her.
Alleys death was confirmed in a statement from her children True and Lillie Parker that was posted on social media Monday night. We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered, they said.
But within minutes of Alleys death being announced, far-right conspiracy groups on platforms like Telegram were spinning up their own narratives, without any evidence, about why or how Alley died.
On the QAnon message board the Great Awakening, members concluded that the sudden nature of Alleys death was a clear sign that her death was part of a global plot to silence critics of the COVID vaccines.
I wholly believe the [deep state] has a way of dosing people with poisons that create aggressive cancers, one member wrote. Another added: She either just drew the short straw or she was poisoned by the Deep State for being a public Patriot.

They never cease to amaze me.
Lots of bad science still gets published. Here's how we can change that.
For over a decade, scientists have been grappling with the alarming realization that many published findings in fields ranging from psychology to cancer biology may actually be wrong. Or at least, we dont know if theyre right, because they just dont hold up when other scientists repeat the same experiments, a process known as replication.
In a 2015 attempt to reproduce 100 psychology studies from high-ranking journals, only 39 of them replicated. And in 2018, one effort to repeat influential studies found that 14 out of 28 just half replicated. Another attempt found that only 13 out of 21 social science results picked from the journals Science and Nature could be reproduced.
This is known as the replication crisis, and its devastating. The ability to repeat an experiment and get consistent results is the bedrock of science. If important experiments didnt really find what they claimed to, that could lead to iffy treatments and a loss of trust in science more broadly. So scientists have done a lot of tinkering to try to fix this crisis. Theyve come up with open science practices that help somewhat like preregistration, where a scientist announces how shell conduct her study before actually doing the study and journals have gotten better about retracting bad papers. Yet top journals still publish shoddy papers, and other researchers still cite and build on them.
This is where the Transparent Replications project comes in.
The project, launched last week by the nonprofit Clearer Thinking, has a simple goal: to replicate any psychology study published in Science or Nature (as long as its not way too expensive or technically hard). The idea is that, from now on, before researchers submit their papers to a prestigious journal, theyll know that their work will be subjected to replication attempts, and theyll have to worry about whether their findings hold up. Ideally, this will shift their incentives toward producing more robust research in the first place, as opposed to just racking up another publication in hopes of getting tenure.

My dad lived in the "publish or perish" world, but was a physical scientist (physical geographer). He was also a meticulous researcher and would die before publishing anything not triple or quad-checked. One reason I found this interesting. But psychology isn't a "hard" science....

'Twin Peaks' Actor Al Strobel Dies at 83
Al Strobel, best known for playing one-armed Phillip Gerard on David Lynchs cult classic show Twin Peaks, passed away in Eugene, Oregon on Friday. He was 83. Former colleagues, including the shows creators and Strobels fellow actors, took to social media over the weekend in an outpouring of love for the performer following the news. Through the darkness of future past and much sadness we say goodbye to Al Strobel, said Twin Peaks producer Sabrina Sutherland in a statement. He is an irreplaceable human being and will always be an important part of our Twin Peaks family. Strobel, who lost his arm in a car accident at the age of 17, would go on to portray some of the most memorable moments in the series, including the haunting recital of the poem Fire Walk With Me in the shows third episode.

Family of Texas entrepreneur fatally shot by police say he was defending his home
A tech entrepreneur in Texas wasnt given ample time to drop a rifle he was carrying on his own front porch before he was fatally shot by police last month, his devastated family told NBC News.
Rajan Raj Moonesinghe, 33, had returned from a trip and suspected his home had been burglarized during the early-morning hours of Nov. 15. Thats when he held a rifle outside his front door and was encountered by an Austin police officer who quickly shot him while almost simultaneously ordering Moonesinghe to drop the gun, relatives said.
In an exclusive interview on Thursday, Moonesinghes mother, Ruth, and brother, Johann, said they are heartbroken and demanding answers from Austin police as to why their loved one was killed so quickly before being given a reasonable amount of time to drop the weapon.
He did nothing wrong, Johann Moonesinghe said. He had a gun
he was defending his house and he didnt point the gun. He was not menacing. He didnt look like he was going to shoot anyone.

Typical cop---shoot first, ask questions afterwards. Wonder if he'd have shot so quickly if the guy was white?
Florida Gators QB arrested on child pornography charges, suspended by UF
Backup Florida Gators quarterback Jalen Kitna has been arrested on two counts of distribution of child exploitation material and three counts of possession of child pornography, according to a Gainesville Police Department release.
According to the release, Kitna was interviewed by Gainesville Police detectives regarding the sharing of images on his Discord account and told them that he believed the two images to be legal since he found them online.
Kitna said he realized he should not have shared those two images, based on the reaction from the other Discord user that he shared them with. Shortly after sharing the images, Kitna said his Discord account was deactivated and that he assumed someone reported him to Discord.
Kitna stated that he received an email from Discord stating that his account was deactivated due to a violation of the terms of service. That was later confirmed by an email from Discord.

Why the government lets nursing facilities get away with poor staffing
Regulators have allowed thousands of nursing homes across America to flout federal staffing rules by going an entire day and night without a registered nurse on duty, a USA TODAY investigation has found.
Nearly all of them got away with it: Only 4% were cited by government inspectors. Even fewer were fined.
When other nursing home caregivers are added into the equation, one-third of U.S. facilities fell short of multiple benchmarks the federal government has created for nurse and aide staffing.
Low-income residents, disproportionately people of color, fare the worst. Their nursing homes report the lowest staffing levels, but data show they seldom get in trouble because of it.
A USA TODAY investigation has documented, for the first time, how rarely the federal government enforces decades-old staffing guidelines and rules for nursing homes.
Citations and penalties remained sparse even as regulators developed three ways to measure staffing. In the spring, they will propose a fourth approach.

This might be the most depressing article I've read all week. A society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable.

Mom of Club Q Massacre Suspect Now Facing Charges Too
The mother of the suspect accused of fatally gunning down five people and wounding 18 at a Colorado Springs gay bar was herself arrested in the hours after the deadly shooting, according to a summons obtained by The Daily Beast.
Laura Lea Voepel, 45, is facing two misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest over a meltdown she allegedly had when police showed up at her home around 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 20. Roughly three-and-a-half hours earlier, authorities say 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich opened fire on patrons and staff at Club Q, a local LGBTQ nightspot.
Aldrich, whose lawyers say he identifies as non-binary but whose mother used male pronouns in text messages to him on the day of the shooting, was born Nicholas Franklin Brink in 2000 to Voepel and MMA-fighter-turned-porn-actor Aaron Franklin Brink. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Aldrich, who is listed as male in jail booking records, changed their name in 2016 to escape their fathers criminal past, court filings show.
After the Club Q massacre, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department showed up at Voepels North Union Boulevard apartment building, the summons states, noting that cops warned Voepel multiple times to stop yelling or she would be arrested.
Subject continued to make unreasonable noise directly next to multiple apartments, the summons, which was first reported by Denver Fox affiliate KDVR and Denver NBC affiliate KUSA, continues. While I attempted to place subject into custody, she became combative by physically resisting officers control by force.

Looks to me like the shooter was born with about 4 strikes against him. Lousy genes all around.
QAnon influencer's 'groomer' past shaken loose by ill-conceived defamation suit against newspaper
Court records reveal a QAnon influencer has a criminal past involving a sexual relationship with a minor.
Conspiracy theorist Phil Godlewski filed a defamation suit against the Scranton Times-Tribune that inadvertently outed him as the sort of "groomer" that fellow QAnon adherents are purportedly worried about, and the newspaper has filed a new motion that claims he perjured himself and broke other courtroom rules, reported The Daily Beast.
The Pennsylvania-based Godlewski has more than 600,000 followers on the right-wing social media app Telegram and another 156,000 subscribers on the alternative video platform Rumble, and he bought a $1.7 million house earlier this year with money he made directing his fans to sign up for multilevel marketing schemes and other financial arrangements.
But the conspiracy theorist pleaded guilty more than a decade ago to corruption of a minor and sentenced to three months under house arrest after he was indicted on a variety of charges related to an alleged sexual relationship with a girl he met when she was a 15-year-old high school freshman and he was a 25-year-old high school baseball coach.
