The reported explosion at Northeastern University was a hoax and an employee who said he was injured is arrested

A reported explosion last month at Northeastern University was a hoax and the employee who said he was injured has been arrested, according to authorities and FBI statements made in court documents.

The FBI Boston office announced an arrest in a tweet Tuesday morning, but court documents viewed by NBC News show that the package detonation reported on Sept. 13 at Holmes Hall never occurred.

U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins said at a news conference later Tuesday that the suspect, Jason Duhaime, "is alleged to have fabricated the story."

Duhaime was arrested Tuesday near his home in San Antonio, Texas. He's been charged with falsely conveying a bomb threat and lying to federal agents during his interview, according to the FBI.

Dr. Oz's Scientific Experiments Killed Over 300 Dogs, Entire Litter of Puppies

In a scandal that will surely make Mitt Romney—who famously strapped his family dog atop the roof of his car for a road trip—look like a PETA activist, a review of 75 studies published by Mehmet Oz between 1989 and 2010 reveals the Republican Senate candidate’s research killed over 300 dogs and inflicted significant suffering on them and the other animals used in experiments.

Oz, the New Jersey resident who’s currently running for U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania, was a “principal investigator” at the Columbia University Institute of Comparative Medicine labs for years and assumed “full scientific, administrative, and fiscal responsibility for the conduct” of his studies. Over the course of 75 studies published in academic journals reviewed by Jezebel, Oz’s team conducted experiments on at least 1,027 live animal subjects that included dogs, pigs, calves, rabbits, and small rodents. Thirty-four of these experiments resulted in the deaths of at least 329 dogs, while two of his experiments killed 31 pigs, and 38 experiments killed 661 rabbits and rodents.

In the early 2000s, testimony from a whistleblower and veterinarian named Catherine Dell’Orto about Oz’s research detailed extensive suffering inflicted on his team’s canine test subjects, including multiple violations of the Animal Welfare Act, which sets minimum standards of care for dogs, cats, primates, rabbits, and other animals in the possession of animal dealers and laboratories. The law specifically requires researchers and breeders to use pain-relieving drugs or euthanasia on the animals, and not use paralytics without anesthesia, or multiple times on the same animal.

Dell’Orto testified that a dog experimented on by Oz’s team experienced lethargy, vomiting, paralysis, and kidney failure, but wasn’t euthanized for a full two days. She alleged other truly horrifying examples of gratuitously cruel treatment of dogs, including at least one dog who was kept alive for a month for continued experimentation despite her unstable, painful condition, despite how data from her continued experimentation was deemed unusable. According to Dell’Orto, one Oz-led study resulted in a litter of puppies being killed by intracardiac injection with syringes of expired drugs inserted in their hearts without any sedation. Upon being killed, the puppies were allegedly left in a garbage bag with living puppies who were their littermates. Dell’Orto’s allegations, made in 2003 and 2004, are detailed in letters from PETA to the university and USDA. In an interview with Billy Penn last month, she acknowledged PETA “is not a reliable source of information,” but said the organization’s letters honestly reflected what she told the organization and provided documentation for.

Women's Bodies Are Bearing the Brunt of Purity Culture

By Karen Alea

Alyssa pushed through the pain each time she had sex with her husband. It was sharp. It stung and it burned. He had no idea. She endured it because she was a good wife.

“Men need to be sexually satisfied, minimally once every 72 hours; after that they start to get sexually frustrated.” That academic tidbit came from Alyssa’s college class “Psychology of Marriage and Family” at Liberty University, where she learned to be a satisfactory wife and mother with evangelical values. She’d learned this same lesson through her upbringing in a Southern Baptist household in Virginia that also dipped its toe into more fundamentalist teachings. What she wasn’t taught was that burning during sex could be the result of vaginal tearing—tearing that would swell then heal thicker into a bump that would be retraumatized each time she had sex with her husband. Every 72 hours, give or take.

Alyssa, who requested to go by her first name only, wasn’t taught how to understand her own body, only how to preserve its purity before she married. As she explained it to me, “Just keep your tatas covered and your legs closed, lest you be a complete slut.”

Purity culture became a fully fledged youth movement in the ‘90s—although the belief system existed long before—with successful books like Joshua Harris’ I Kissed Dating Goodbye. The movement emphasized virginity as an active pursuit rather than just a denial of the flesh, pulling from Bible verses about remaining celibate before marriage while also making sure you did marry, because “it is better to marry than to burn with passion” (1 Corinthians 7 ). At purity balls, teen girls wore white ruffled gowns and were escorted by their fathers. T-shirts with “Love Can Wait” and “Virginity Rocks” written across them sold out. Teens across the country slipped on silver promise rings, just like the 2000s crop of Disney stars (the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Demi Lovato).

Purity culture also led to ignorance and shame: an ignorance of our own bodies and a feeling of shame that precluded seeking medical help. Instead, many Christian women—and anyone else who fell across purity culture’s path—developed the mindset that reproductive system-related pain was a result we must endure, because Eve gave Adam that apple. “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in pain you shall bring forth children,” the Bible reads (Genesis 3:16). The message was bear the vaginal tears, push through the excruciating menstrual pain, be plagued by yeast infections, suffer from other undiagnosed maladies. Now, in this post-Roe era, politicians are doubling down on purity culture talking points and attempting to correct those who betrayed purity culture values by forcing them to endure the physical dangers of pregnancy.

Endure in ignorance is exactly what Alyssa, who experienced burning, stinging pain during sex, did.

Matt Gaetz Votes No On Relief Money As Florida Deals With Death, Hurricane Damage

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), a Florida native and lawmaker, voted against a measure to free up millions of dollars in disaster relief for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Gaetz was one of several House Republicans on Friday who voted against a resolution to allow FEMA to use up to $15 million from the Disaster Relief Fund, Newsweek reported.

The bill passed in both the House and the Senate, and it awaits President Joe Biden’s approval.

The vote comes in the same week that Hurricane Ian killed dozens of Florida residents, flooded communities, and destroyed homes and businesses.

Gaetz and other GOP lawmakers added their names to a letter that said they’d “do what is necessary” to stop funding the Biden administration, according to the news site.

10 torture sites in 1 town: Russia sowed pain, fear in Izium

The first time the Russian soldiers caught him, they tossed him bound and blindfolded into a trench covered with wooden boards for days on end.

Then they beat him, over and over: Legs, arms, a hammer to the knees, all accompanied by furious diatribes against Ukraine. Before they let him go, they took away his passport and Ukrainian military ID — all he had to prove his existence — and made sure he knew exactly how worthless his life was.

“No one needs you,” the commander taunted. “We can shoot you any time, bury you a half-meter underground and that’s it.”

The brutal encounter at the end of March was just the start. Andriy Kotsar would be captured and tortured twice more by Russian forces in Izium, and the pain would be even worse.

Russian torture in Izium was arbitrary, widespread and absolutely routine for both civilians and soldiers throughout the city, an Associated Press investigation has found. While torture was also evident in Bucha, that devastated Kyiv suburb was only occupied for a month. Izium served as a hub for Russian soldiers for nearly seven months, during which they established torture sites everywhere.

Based on accounts of survivors and police, AP journalists located 10 torture sites in the town and gained access to five of them. They included a deep sunless pit in a residential compound with dates carved in the brick wall, a clammy underground jail that reeked of urine and rotting food, a medical clinic, a police station and a kindergarten.
