Bruce Japsen: Employer Health Cost Increases At 15-Year Low As ObamaCare Comes Into View

U.S. employers this year face their “smallest increases in health care costs in 15 years,” according to a new survey showing the latest evidence of health inflation slowing. The trend comes as employers move to higher deductible health care plans that make workers think twice about choosing expensive tests and procedures, forcing employees to become better health care shoppers. Employers are also installing additional new strategies to encourage wellness activities such as financial incentives to stop smoking.

Most respondents to the survey are “recalibrating their health strategy” with 18 percent having either adopted a new strategy or updated an existing one, the Towers Watson executive summary of the report said. Another 57 percent of respondents are “in process,” the summary added. Two in five respondents cite the Affordable Care Act as the primary driver of their health care strategy.

Texas school puts date rape drug detectors in drink coasters for spring break

Texas college is preparing for spring break by handing out drink coasters that can detect date rape drugs.

KVEO reported on Wednesday that Texas State Technical College (TSTC) was providing students with 10,000 coasters that had the ability to detect if drinks had been spiked with common date rape drugs like Rohypnol or Xanax.

“It’s important for students to have these because, uh, they’re going off to spring break and they’re doing things that they wouldn’t normally do,” TSTC counselor Michael Muniz told the station.

As TSTC’s website notes, the school’s Harlingen campus is located “just forty miles from the beaches of South Padre Island and just north of the Mexico border.”

“There’s a lot of people at these bars, especially on the Island,” Muniz explained. “So what we want them to do is be safe, so they can come back to school, finish college, be successful, and have successful lives.”

Muniz suggested that students should take a few drops of their drinks and rub them on the coaster. If the spot turns blue, it’s an indication that drugs have been added to the drink.

Bernie Sanders wants to unite Tea Party and progressive voters in 2016 White House run

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said he’s prepared to run for president in 2016 because he doesn’t see anyone willing to stand up for progressive values.

“This country faces more serious problems than at any time since the Great Depression, and there is a horrendous lack of serious political discourse or ideas out there that can address these crises,” Sanders told The Nation. “That somebody has got to represent the working-class and the middle-class of this country in standing up to the big-money interests who have so much power over the economic and political life of this country.”

Sanders said he would offer a more progressive choice than presumed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

“[She] is a very, very intelligent person, no question about it, but I don’t know what her political future is, whether she’s going to run,” Sanders told TIME. “I don’t know what she’s going to say, but if you talk about the need for a political revolution in America, it’s fair to say that Secretary Clinton probably will not be one of the more active people.”
While he’s not actively organizing and raising money for a White House bid, Sanders said he has been traveling around the country and asking Americans about their concerns.

“I think it’s premature to be talking about a campaign when we still have a 2014 congressional race in front of us,” Sanders told The Nation.

Although he generally caucuses with Democrats, the senator said he would have to run an unconventional campaign because he is listed as an independent – although he suggested that could be an advantage.

“I think there is profound disgust among the American people for the conventional political process and the never-ending campaigns,” Sanders said. “If I run, my job is to help bring together the kind of coalition that can win—that can transform politics. We’ve got to bring together trade unionists and working families, our minority communities, environmentalists, young people, the women’s community, the gay community, seniors, veterans, the people who in fact are the vast majority of the American population. We’ve got to create a progressive agenda and rally people around that agenda.”

There's No Need to End Saturday Mail Delivery - Sen. Bernie Sanders

The U.S. Postal Service is one of our most popular and important government agencies. It provides universal service six days a week to every corner of America, no matter how small or remote. It supports millions of jobs in virtually every other sector of our economy. It provides decent-paying union jobs to some 500,000 Americans, and it is the largest employer of veterans.

Whether you are a low-income elderly woman living at the end of a dirt road in Vermont or a wealthy CEO living on Park Avenue, you get your mail six days a week. And you pay for this service at a cost far less than anywhere else in the industrialized world.

Yet the Postal Service is under constant and vicious attack. Why? The answer is simple. There are very powerful and wealthy special interests who want to privatize or dismember virtually every function that government now performs, whether it is Social Security, Medicare, public education or the Postal Service. They see an opportunity for Wall Street and corporate America to make billions in profits out of these services, and couldn't care less how privatization or a degradation of services affects ordinary Americans.
