Samuel See was found unresponsive in his cell at the Union Avenue detention facility on Sunday and later was pronounced dead, New Haven police said. The medical examiner’s office said the cause of his death was pending further study. Police and court officials are investigating the death.
See, 34, was an assistant professor of English and American studies who was on leave from Yale, the university said.
See was charged on Saturday with violating a protective order, threatening and interfering with police officers, police said. He was treated for a cut above his eye at a hospital, they said.
Police said they received a complaint of a domestic dispute shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday. They said officers spoke with Saunder Ganglani, who identified See as his husband and said he went to the home they shared to retrieve his belongings. Ganglani was charged with violating a protective order.
Police said officers told See there was a second protective order protecting Ganglani from him.
See became enraged, yelling that it was his house and that he shouldn’t be arrested, police said. See fought with the officers when they tried handcuffing him, police said.
As See was led to a police car, he yelled to one of the arresting officers, “I will kill you … I will destroy you,” police said.
See was delivered to the detention center at about 9:10 p.m. Saturday by police and was alert and communicating with marshals throughout his detainment until marshals found him unresponsive in his cell at about 6 a.m. Sunday, Judicial Branch spokeswoman Rhonda Stearley-Hebert said. Marshals immediately provided CPR and other lifesaving efforts, until relieved by New Haven Fire and Rescue, she said.
The Judicial Branch is conducting a review to make sure policies and procedures were followed, Stearley-Hebert said.

Tony Rohr, who worked his way up from cook to general manager at the company, was told it was mandatory to keep his Elkhart, Ind., store open on the holiday.
"I just decided I wasn't going to agree to it," Rohr said. "All of these people the whole year had been told they were going to have the day off."
Luckily for him, Pizza Hut stepped in and "strongly recommended" that the local franchise hire him back, saying the company respects "an employee's right to not work on a holiday."

Pizza Hut issued this statement Thursday morning:
As follow up to the situation in Elkhart, IN, we feel strongly that the situation involving our independent franchisee and the local store manager could and should have been avoided. We fully respect an employee's right to not work on a holiday, which is why the vast majority of Pizza Huts in America are closed on Thanksgiving. As a result, we strongly recommended that the local franchisee reinstate the store manager and they have agreed. We look forward to them welcoming Tony back to the team.
Rohr said that in his 10 years with the company, this was the first time any location had asked him to work on Thanksgiving.
Rohr said earlier that he had no regrets about pushing back.
"No, not at all," he said. "I'm glad I did that."

business owner jailed for loitering on his own property.

Eric Lee, who owns a furniture story on Covington Highway in Lithonia, says thieves have targeted him several times.
“They recommended us have a gun. The police officer said the crime rate is one of the worst,” Lee told Channel 2’s Rachel Stockman.
So he bought a gun and also got a concealed carry permit.
One night, Lee went outside to check on some people making noise on his property.

“They (the police) just pulled in and said, ‘What is going on? What is going on? Hands up, Anybody have any weapon?’ I said I have a gun. They just grabbed me, took my gun and threw me in the car,” Lee said.
Lee said he told the officer he had the permit on him. He was cited for loitering and his truck was towed from his private property.

A judge dismissed the case at his initial appearance and apologized. For more than a year, Lee has been trying to get his gun back, get an apology from police and get reimbursed for the cost of getting his car towed.
Shortly after the incident, he wrote a letter to DeKalb County Internal Affairs and asked for the officers who arrested him to be investigated.
“I am not sure how one can be loitering on property that they own. I am also not sure how one can be carrying a weapon without a permit when they do indeed have a permit for the weapon at issue. I believe my Fourth and Second Amendment rights were violated.”

Within the last month, Lee filed a federal lawsuit claiming his constitutional rights were violated.

Miami gardens store video catches cops in the wrong.

He’s been searched more than 100 times. And arrested and jailed 56 times.
Despite his long rap sheet, Sampson, 28, has never been convicted of anything more serious than possession of marijuana.
Miami Gardens police have arrested Sampson 62 times for one offense: trespassing.
Almost every citation was issued at the same place: the 207 Quickstop, a convenience store on 207th Street in Miami Gardens.
But Sampson isn’t loitering. He works as a clerk at the Quickstop.
So how can he be trespassing when he works there?

It’s a question the store’s owner, Alex Saleh, 36, has been asking for more than a year as he watched Sampson, his other employees and his customers, day after day, being stopped and frisked by Miami Gardens police. Most of them, like Sampson, are poor and black.
And, like Sampson, many of them have been cited for minor infractions, sometimes as often as three times in the same day.

Saleh was so troubled by what he saw that he decided to install video cameras in his store. Not to protect himself from criminals, because he says he has never been robbed. He installed the cameras — 15 of them — he said, to protect him and his customers from police.
Since he installed the cameras in June 2012 he has collected more than two dozen videos, some of which have been obtained by the Miami Herald. Those tapes, and Sampson’s 38-page criminal history — including charges never even pursued by prosecutors — raise some troubling questions about the conduct of the city’s police officers.
The videos show, among other things, cops stopping citizens, questioning them, aggressively searching them and arresting them for trespassing when they have permission to be on the premises; officers conducting searches of Saleh’s business without search warrants or permission; using what appears to be excessive force on subjects who are clearly not resisting arrest and filing inaccurate police reports in connection with the arrests.
“There is just no justifying this kind of behavior,’’ said Chuck Drago, a former police officer and consultant on police policy and the use of force. “Nobody can justify overstepping the constitution to fight crime.”
Repeated phone messages and emails to Miami Gardens Police Chief Matthew Boyd and City Manager Cameron Benson asking for comment on this story were not returned.
Boyd did release a statement, saying that the department is committed to serving and protecting the citizens and businesses in the city.
But Howard Simon, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union Florida, said that’s exactly what Boyd is NOT doing.
“Where is the police chief in all this? In a police department in a city this size, this kind of behavior could not escape his attention. Doesn’t the City Commission know that they are exposing the city to either massive liability for civil rights violations? Either that, or they are going to wake up one day and find the U.S. Department of Justice has taken over its police department.’’

Deeds critically wounded; son dead from gunshot

Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath, is in critical condition after being stabbed in his home and his son Gus is dead from a gunshot wound, law enforcement sources told the Richmond Times-Dispatch this morning.

In a news release, Virginia State Police said they responded to Deeds' home in Millboro at 7:25 a.m., and that the lawmaker was flown to the U.Va. medical center.

"Virginia State Police are on the scene of an assault of a state legislator that took place Tuesday morning," the news release said. "Senator Creigh Deeds has been transported to U.Va. Hospital in Charlottesville for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the assault at his residence."
Regarding Deeds' son, state police would only say that "a second individual at the residence is deceased."

Thirty-nine House Democrats joined 222 Republicans to pass the "Keep Your Health Plan Act of 2013," a bill to allow Americans to keep certain health care plans banned because of Obamacare.
The 261-to-157 vote was the largest sign of defection yet for President Obama on his signature legislative achievement.
Many of the Democrats who supported the bill, sponsored by Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., are in highly competitive districts and were eager to cast a vote in support of fixing the troubled Affordable Care Act.
