Annnnd how would you like to find this on a tree in your yard?

(looks like Nikki escaped from the SC Governor's Mansion)

<snip>
Heathwood resident Andrew Philson snapped photos of what to him appeared to be a 15-foot python hanging in a tree behind his Devereaux Road home Monday. Officials with the state Department of Natural Resources say the critter is not the monster it appears to be in photos and is really a 6-foot-long black rat snake.
Regardless of the serpent’s size, the snake has been a hot topic in Columbia the past few days.

15 feet, 6 feet, or whatever. That is a big snake.
I have seen a 12 foot rat snake that an uncle found in a barn. He held it up on a pitchfork, and its tail and head were dragging on the ground as it lay across the tines.

It could end up anywhere, and that includes inside houses. This is not out in the middle of a farm. It's apparently visiting its kin because Riverbanks Zoo is near there.

It has 2 Twitter accounts. @midlandsMamba @SlitherSnake
It is more media savvy than most of the state legislature.

If you see someone with a Super Soaker, you might be in serious trouble:

Man Arrested With Shotgun Disguised as "Super Soaker"
Squirt gun held shotgun shell, police said

This squirt gun packs serious heat.

A Super Soaker (not this one) was modified to hold a shotgun shell, police said.

A 54-year-old convicted felon was reportedly arrested in California for carrying a “Super Soaker” gun that had been modified to hold a shotgun shell instead of water. Fresno police told KMPH-TV the arrest came shortly after they had been briefed about people who convert toy guns into weapons.

Police said they encountered Randy Smith walking the streets while carrying the weapon around his neck in a sling.

"He took the Super Soaker apart, was able to fashion a barrel to where he was able to make what's considered a zip gun, where you can fire one round through it,” Sergeant Mark Hudson told KMPH. “In this case it was a 20 gauge shotgun shell."

A local gun shop employee told the TV station such a modification could be made for as cheap as $30, but would be about as safe for its handler as “putting a hand grenade next to your head.”

Bill DonoHO,Catholic League Cardinal,inadvertently tells truth when he tries mocking Maureen Dowd

"My Dearest Maureen, I have a confession to make. While some may think you sound like a delusional weepy woman, don’t listen to them. You see, I was in on those meetings with the bishops when we hatched plans to stick it to women and sabotage the Democrats. We met over drinks. Plenty of them. Except for one bishop who said over time women could become our equal, all of us agreed that you gals need to be kept in your place. As you properly note, this means being subjugated to the lower caste, just the way we snookered Mother Teresa.

"You are only partly right about the Democrats. In fact, starting last year our goal was to rig the Republican primary so that Romney would win. Why? Because then we could pull his Mormon strings without being accused of running the government. So far, so good. Just don’t tell Mitt. We are obsessed about sex. Indeed, when I meet with the bishops, it’s the only thing we talk about. Admittedly, it sometimes feels like I’m at a frat party, but boys will be boys. There is one difference: at frat parties, chastity belts for women are never discussed, but with the bishops, nothing is more important." - Catholic League blowhard Bill Donohue, mocking the Maureen Dowd piece.

Are Grits Groceries?

Damn straight.

I am a Southern lefty in the banana split republic of SC. It has a lot of good hidden by the fruits and nuts on top.

I am also a cranky witch who I am sure a lot of people would lie to hear less from. It's hard enough to keep in step. Don't ask me to stay in line.

If you are new here, hang in. You will be enlightened in many ways both good and bad. Don't take any one post or even several as a barometer of what all really believe. There is an incredible diversity of opinion here which is a remarkably good thing.

Drowning looks different than you think- Know the signs of drowning

Think drowning involves screaming, gasping, and flailing? Think it's easy to notice someone drowning? Well, you're wrong. Drowning is a silent killer. There's no waving or calling for help of any kind. It's not like what you see on TV. Many people would not even notice another person drowning at just 30 yards away. Read on for tips on how to keep yourself and those you love safe from this silent killer whether at the beach or in your backyard pool.
<snip>
Signs of Drowning
Watch for these signs the next time you're swimming with your kids or others:

Head low in the water, mouth at water level
Head tilted back with open mouth
Hair over forehead or eyes
Eyes glassy, empty and unable to focus
Eyes closed
Hyperventilating or gasping
Not using legs
Body is vertical and upright
Trying to swim in a certain direction but not making progress
Trying to roll over on the back

Stay Aware to Save a Life
Keep your eyes open for any oddities because even when things seem ok, they may not be. A good way to be sure is to ask your kid or the person you're swimming with if he or she is all right. If they are rather still, do not answer or have a blank stare, then you may have less than 30 seconds to get to them! As any parent knows, kids make noise in the water. If they are not making noise, find out why and get them out of the water ASAP.

Maureen Dowd lands on the Catholic Church hierarchy with both feet in her column:

'Father Doesn't Know Best'
<snip>
The poll appeared on the same day as headlines about Catholic Church leaders fighting President Obama’s attempt to get insurance coverage for contraception for women who work or go to college at Catholic institutions. The church insists it’s an argument about religious freedom, not birth control. But, really, it’s about birth control, and women’s lower caste in the church. It’s about conservative bishops targeting Democratic candidates who support contraception and abortion rights as a matter of public policy. And it’s about a church that is obsessed with sex in ways it shouldn’t be, and not obsessed with sex in ways it should be.

The bishops and the Vatican care passionately about putting women in chastity belts. Yet they let unchaste priests run wild for decades, unconcerned about the generations of children who were violated and raped and passed around like communion wine.

They still have not done a proper reckoning, and the acrid scandal never ends. In the midst of a landmark trial in Philadelphia charging Msgr. William Lynn with covering up sexual abuse by priests and then recirculating the perverts, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced Sunday that two priests in their 70s who worked in parishes and hospitals had abused minors at some point and were unfit for ministry.

This follows five priests sidelined earlier this month because of substantiated claims of sexual abuse or other violations, plus 17 others suspended after last year’s sickening grand jury report on rampant sexual abuse in the Philadelphia Archdiocese.

You may not agree with MoDo a lot, but she has consistently been a critic of the Catholic Church and their policies.
Her brothers are staunch Catholics who she admits are much more consevative than she is, but she does talk to them about their views to gain another perspective. They don't drive her opinion though.

Hollaback: Ending Street Harrassment

Hollaback! is a movement dedicated to ending street harassment using mobile technology. Street harassment is one of the most pervasive forms of gender-based violence and one of the least legislated against. Comments from “You’d look good on me” to groping, flashing and assault are a daily, global reality for women and LGBTQ individuals. But it is rarely reported, and it’s culturally accepted as ‘the price you pay’ for being a woman or for being gay. At Hollaback!, we don’t buy it.

We believe that everyone has a right to feel safe and confident without being objectified. Sexual harassment is a gateway crime that creates a cultural environment that makes gender-based violence OK. There exists a clear legal framework to reproach sexual harassment and abuse in the home and at work, but when it comes to the streets—all bets are off. This gap isn’t because street harassment hurts any less, it’s because there hasn’t been a solution. Until now. The explosion of mobile technology has given us an unprecedented opportunity to end street harassment—and with it, the opportunity to take on one of the final new frontiers for women’s rights around the world.

By collecting women and LGBTQ folks’ stories and pictures in a safe and share-able way with our very own mobile phone applications, Hollaback! is creating a crowd-sourced initiative to end street harassment. Hollaback! breaks the silence that has perpetuated sexual violence internationally, asserts that any and all gender-based violence is unacceptable, and creates a world where we have an option—and, more importantly—a response.
<snip>
Break the silence: We work with women, girls, and LGBTQ individuals to document in words and pictures, and to literally indicate on a map, where they experienced harassment in public spaces. Doing this provides a forum for individuals to share their experiences and brings attention to this long-ignored issue.
<snip>
http://www.ihollaback.org/

This is a step against harrassment and ultimately violence. People get away with crimes because they know few are watching. This project documents who, what, when and where. It is a step to help prevent trouble.

If someone knows they have been captured in a picture, it takes away the anonymity they count on. This also can be used by law enforcement as a starting point if there is a problem.

New and more effective CPR method

This video clip is very instructive about some points that people may not utilize.

http://ahsc.arizona.edu/node/730

More Information: Katie Maass, (520) 626-4083, [email protected]
Sarver Heart Center’s newest video makes it easy to learn Continuous Chest Compression CPR.

Every three days, more Americans die from sudden cardiac arrest than the number who died in the 9-11 attacks.
You can lessen this recurring loss by learning this hands-only CPR method that doubles a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest.
Watch physician researchers Gordon A. Ewy, MD, and Karl Kern, MD, demonstrate the easy, life-saving method that they developed at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

If this isn't new to you, then I'm glad you already know about it.
I didn't think it would hurt to post this as new info or as a reminder.
