National Cherries Jubilee Day Cherries Jubilee Day is set aside to celebrate a dessert that takes cherries and turns them into something spectacular. Fresh cherries are cooked in a sweet sauce into which warmed liqueur, usually kirsch or fruit brandy, is mixed and set alight before being spooned over a chilled bowl of vanilla ice-cream while still burning with a blue flame. This show-stopping flambéed dish is credited to the famous chef, Auguste Escoffie, who created it for the 1897 Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria. Cherries Jubilee became a big hit across the Atlantic and was a favourite in American restaurants of the 1950s and 60s. Today it has come back into fashion and Cherries Jubilee Day is the ideal time to discover this dramatic and delicious dish. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cherries-jubilee-day/

Punctuation Day The importance of proper punctuation forms the center of an ongoing debate, where the necessity of clear and precise communication is held up against the need for an evolution language. Punctuation Day argues that the correct use of apostrophes, semicolons and other punctuation is critical if you’re to get your (rather than, say, you’re) message across. If you’ve spotted any examples of bad punctuation, take Punctuation Day as an opportunity to share them with your friends to promote awareness. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/punctuation-day/

National Great American Pot Pie Day is observed annually on September 23rd. A baked savory pie typically with both a bottom and a flaky top crust is served often to a hungry bunch. Be it frozen store bought or home-made, it is sure to please those taste buds.
The filling of a pot pie varies from many different ingredients, some of which are beef, chicken, turkey, gravy and seafood. Many vegetables like potatoes, carrots, green beans and peas are also popular choices.http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

Checkers Day Checkers Day doesn’t have anything to do with the popular board game; rather, it commemorates the famous ‘checkers‘ speech made by Richard M. Nixon in 1952 after he received an adorable Cocker Spaniel as he sought election in 1952. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/checkers-day/

Restless Legs Awareness Day Restless Legs Awareness Day aims to promote awareness of this medical condition or syndrome. It is held on the same day each year to coincide with the birth date of Professor Karl-Axel Ekborn (born 23rd September 1907, died 1977). This eminent Swedish neurologist first wrote and described the disease in 1945. Since then, a lot has been learned about its symptoms although (to date) there is no known primary cause. It may be associated with dopamine or blood iron levels. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/restless-legs-awareness-day/

The Autumnal Equinox is observed annually when the sun can be seen directly overhead along the equator, marking the end of summer and beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

The autumn equinox is one of two days when all points on Earth except the polar regions see the sun rise and set at due east and due west. With few exceptions, all latitudes see almost exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 of dark. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

National Ice Cream
Cone Day Ice Cream Cone Day seeks to draw attention to the invention of the ice cream cone; an important, yet sadly often overlooked, invention that allows people to enjoy delicious ice cream combined with a handily portable and edible wafer cone, often whilst out and about. Just imagine what the world would look like without an ice cream cone. No ’99s, ice cream would have to be eaten with a bowl, and ice lollies would dominate! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ice-cream-cone-day/

White Chocolate Day White chocolate is a relatively new arrival to the chocolate market, having only been invented and introduced (in Switzerland) in the 1930s. White Chocolate Day celebrates this tasty treat – and although initially considered not to be ‘true’ chocolate in a definitive sense, regulations were eventually relaxed to allow for white chocolate which contains sufficient cocoa to be considered to be ‘real’ chocolate. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/white-chocolate-day/

American Business Women's Day Business Women’s Day is celebrated all around the world on September 22nd to commemorate the day when Hilary A. Bufton Junior founded the American Business Women’s Association on September 22nd, 1949 along with three other business women from Kansas City. This special day celebrates the contribution that women make in the business world and focuses on ways to give women more equality. The first ever Business Women’s Day was celebrated in 1983 when a joint Congressional resolution was passed. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/business-womens-day/

Car Free Day Ever since the first vehicle rolled onto the streets in 1886, the world has had a love-hate relationship with the motor car. Today, with over one billion motor vehicles on the roads around the globe, it sometimes seems as if we cannot escape the pollution, noise and danger that they produce. One day a year is set aside to try and avoiding using cars and cycling, walking or using public transport instead. Car Free Day aims to take the heat off the planet for just one day by encouraging people to be less dependent on their cars and try alternatives. Informal car free days took place throughout the 1990s and the first official, global Car Free Day was launched in 2000. Many big cities, like Bogota and Jakarta, close their central roads on this day and fill them with walking and cycling events, and smaller car-free events take place around the world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-car-free-day/

Dear Diary Day Dear Diary Day hopes to encourage more people to take up a pen and commit the events of their day to paper. Secrets are far safer here than at the fingertips of someone with an axe to grind and access to the internet. This alone contributes significantly to the known psychological benefits of keeping a diary. In the process, proper spelling may also experience a resurgence.https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/dear-diary-day/

Elephant Appreciation Day elephants are certainly worthy of some appreciation from all of us. They are, after all, the largest land mammals in the world and sadly, many species of elephants face the threat of extinction, due to environmental factors and the ivory trade. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/elephant-appreciation-day/

Hobbit Day September 22nd is the Birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s popular Middle Earth Cycle books (The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings respectively) in which Hobbits, typically between two and four feet tall and nothing like your usual ‘hero’, accomplish great feats and amazing acts of courage. It is in honour of these creatures and those acts that the day is celebrated with events not unlike the birthday party described in the beginning of “The Fellowship of the Ring”. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hobbit-day/

International Day of Peace Since 1982, the International Day of Peace has begun with the ringing of the Peace Bell at the United Nations headquarters, New York.

Peace means so much more than an absence of war. More ordinary conflicts arise from disputes with family, colleagues and neighbours and these disturb our sense of peace. Making peace with one person today, even if it is just with yourself, is a fitting way to mark the day. Light a candle, reflect, forgive and enjoy being tranquil. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-day-of-peace/

World Gratitude Day Gratitude Day is celebrated annually on the 21st September. The celebration of Gratitude Day allows both individual citizens and organisations within wider society to celebrate the broad meaning of gratitude in a variety of ways. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-gratitude-day/

National Punch
Day The word punch means five, originating from the Hindustani word panch. Punch Day sadly isn’t an excuse to drink five glasses of punch; rather, it celebrates the traditional punch base recipe of five key ingredients, which most punches still use – alcohol (usually spirits), lemon (or other fruits), sugar, water, and tea (or other spices, e.g. cinnamon). https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/punch-day/

Wife Appreciation Day is an exciting event that gives husbands a chance to demonstrate just how much they love and appreciate their wife. It has been listed in Chase’s Calendar of Annual Events since it was first established, and has been hugely popular ever since. There are so many things that a supportive and loving wife does for her husband, and this is a chance for husbands to look back and remember all the big and little things that add up to so much.

Husbands may want to order a beautiful bouquet of her favorite flowers, and/or arrange a fabulous surprise, such as making a reservation at her special restaurant, booking to see a spectacular show; or taking her on a romantic mini-break. Alternatively, they may want to get her a gift of designer perfume or a unique piece of jewelry, both of which are always gratefully received! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/wife-appreciation-day/

National Butterscotch
Pudding Day People who have a sweet tooth are sure to love Butterscotch Pudding Day, which is held each year on September 19th. This special day is the perfect excuse to indulge in delicious butterscotch pudding. This dessert is extremely easy to make and uses brown sugar, butter, sugar and treacle. The ingredients are boiled together and then cooled until they set. The final constancy of butterscotch pudding should be light and creamy and budding chefs can have fun adding ingredients such as cream, milk and vanilla extract. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/butterscotch-pudding-day/

Talk Like A Pirate Day Yarr! One of our favourite days, Talk Like A Pirate Day encourages you to inject pirate-themed words and noises into everything you say. Talk like a pirate at home, at work, with friends, on the phone and to everybody you meet; top it off by dressing like a pirate, too! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/talk-like-a-pirate-day/

Hug A Greeting Card Writer Day Do you want to say it with a verse, a cartoon or a joke? Then there’s bound to be a card to suit the occasion! Hug a Greeting Card Writer Day offers a chance to thank the unsung heroes who somehow find the right words to express our feelings. The first greeting cards are thought to have been sent in Germany back in the 15th century. Today, it’s estimated that around 170 billion cards are sent worldwide each year. The modest people who write all the poems and messages are usually anonymous, but now they have been given a special day to honour their talents. You could celebrate by signing up for a course in how to create your own greeting cards, or entering a contest on the theme. Alternatively, visit a museum featuring vintage cards, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hug-a-greeting-card-writer-day/

Water Monitoring Day promotes considerate usage of water, so as to preserve resources and ensure that water is available where and when it’s needed most. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/water-monitoring-day/

RTW defeated!

Thousands of phone calls, letters to legislators and door-to-door visits with union members in contested districts paid off for Missouri’s working families Wednesday as the Missouri House sustained Governor Jay Nixon’s veto of HB 116-569/RTW, failing to pass an override motion by a vote of 96-63.

Republicans in the state House needed 109 votes to override the Governor’s veto and make Missouri the 26th right-to-work state.

The measure’s failure is a national setback for right-to-work proponents and a major victory for union members who have seen labor bastions like Michigan and Wisconsin fall to right-to-work in recent years.

Constitution Day Constitution Day falls on 17th September, the anniversary of the official signing of the US constitution in 1787. The document stood as the result of tireless work and compromise between the delegates of the Constitutional Convention – basically to bring about an agreement between the states which would allow a central government the power to enforce its decisions and allow the USA to stand as an international force, while maintaining a reasonable level of independence within the separate states.

Of course, to this day the constitution of 1787 has formed the basis for the development and running of the USA as we know it, priding itself on its roots in democracy, rights and the social contract. Certainly some aspects of the constitution have been contested over the years as attitudes change over time – key issues including slavery and women in employment, while the core elements have remained. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/constitution-day/

Apple Dumpling Day With their origins as a humble peasant dish from the colder European climates of England, Bavaria and Austria, apple dumplings have crossed the Atlantic and spread their sweet smell to the New World. Over the centuries, they have become an internationally loved treat found in many grandmothers’ cookbooks and certainly worth of their own day of celebration. Originally, apple dumplings used to be boiled and steamed, and the word itself comes from German dampf, meaning steam. Nowadays, this aromatic dish is typically baked and stuffed with spiced and sweetened Granny Smith apples, previously cored and peeled. The crucial spice is cinnamon, though nutmeg and lemon zest are popular as well. People across Europe and Northern America bake the dumplings for dessert all the time during the apple harvest season, but they also enjoy them year round using dried apples if necessary. Revisit the smells of your childhood and celebrate the Apple Dumpling Day by serving this rustic treat with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or drenched in decadent caramel sauce. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/apple-dumpling-day/

Country Music Day Country music is one of the most popular types of music in the world and this special type of music originated in the USA. International Country Music Day was established in the 1950s and is held each year on September 17th. On this special day country music festivals are held at various venues around the world. Lovers of country music gather to listen to live music acts while drinking and dancing. Line dancing is popular during International Country Music Day and competitions are often held to determine the best dancers.

This is a vibrant event that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In order to fully embrace the fun of International Country Music Day, it is important to look the part. Dress to impress in a pair of jeans or denim skirt teamed with a gingham. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-country-music-day/

Missouri GOPers reaffirm strong opposition to ALEC's 'Right to Work' attacks

Opposition to ALEC's so-called 'right to work' attacks is and always has been bipartisan. Pushed by out-of-state corporate interests, 'right to work' legislation would harm all working Missourians. This is why Republican legislators have stood against it. Recently, Representatives Linda Black (R-Park Hills), Kathie Conway (R-St. Charles), and Galen Higdon (R-St. Joseph) have all reaffirmed their opposition to these attacks on workers.

Black took to Facebook last week to restate her position after right-to-work mailers went out around her district. These mailers were paid for by the Missouri branch of Americans For Prosperity, the Koch brothers corporate-interest group.
