Adjuncts at St. Louis Community College overwhelmingly approve joining a union

St. Louis Community College adjunct faculty overwhelmingly voted to have a voice on the job by joining the Service Employees International Union Local 1. The 574 eligible faculty members will join with thousands of other part-time, non-tenure track instructors and faculty members around the country who have voted to organize for a voice on the job.

“This vote gives part-time faculty at St. Louis Community College a voice with the administration that they did not previously have,” said Maryanne Angliongto, an adjunct professor at the STLCC Wildwood Campus. “It will allow those who do not get the chance to talk regularly with other instructors the opportunity to do so and to raise our concerns with the administration.”

Among the issues raised by these faculty members are the low wages, lack of benefits, and unpredictable scheduling.

SEIU Local 1 has been working with college and university professors throughout the Midwest to give them a voice on the job; address the low compensation for their work; and to ensure greater benefits and job security. Over the past year, adjunct professors at Washington University voted overwhelmingly to join SEIU Local 1 and are currently bargaining their first contract, and others around the Midwest are also working to organize.

World Toilet Day World Toilet Day…at first glance, this seems like an unlikely candidate for a holiday and more like some sort of joke, but the day is nowhere as trivial or humorous as it may seem. All in all, it strives to draw attention to various sanitation issues around the world and work towards resolving them. Despite access to proper sanitation being declared a basic human right, one in three people across the globe, so some 2.5 billion people in total, do not have regular access to a toilet. Additionally, even amongst those who do have such access, unclean and unsafe toilets pose problems of their own, including contributing towards the spread of diseases like cholera, typhoid and hepatitis—in some parts of Africa, diarrhea is one of the main child-killers. Open defecation is also responsible for increasing the number of sexual assaults perpetrated on women and children. Furthermore, when young girls begin menstruating, the lack of privacy forces them to stay home from school, thus limiting their chances of getting a basic education and, what comes after that, a decent job in the future. St. Louis Zoo proposes buying Grant's Farm – if voters approve tax for upkeep

ST. LOUIS • The St. Louis Zoo has agreed to buy the sprawling south St. Louis County animal park known as Grant's Farm for about $30 million from six heirs of August A. “Gussie” Busch Jr.

The deal would triple the zoo’s acreage, add a third campus to its holdings and allow the zoo to build a “robust” breeding facility for endangered animals, zoo leaders said Wednesday.

“It changes everything,” said Zoo President Jeffrey Bonner.

But the deal only goes through if a city judge agrees with four of six Busch heirs to release the land from a trust — and if area residents approve an added tax to fund as much as $8.5 million in yearly park operation costs.
