National Pecan Pie Day Your grandmother’s house in mid-fall. The air outside is crisp, eve though the sun is shining. Leaves swirl all around you in streaks of yellow, red and brown. And then a delightfully sweet, buttery scent reaches your nostrils and you hear your grandmother’s voice, “Pie’s ready! Come and get it!” https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pecan-pie-day/

Etch A Sketch Day Do you remember Etch a Sketch? If you spent many happy hours drawing pictures on the screen then magically removing them using the plastic slider, you’ll relish the opportunity to relive your childhood on Etch a Sketch Day. The Etch a Sketch toys are still readily available, so it’s a chance to invest in one and get sketching. If you prefer, taking time to do any sort of drawing or painting will be a good way of marking Etch a Sketch Day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/etch-a-sketch-day/

Different Colored Eyes Day Different Colored Eyes Day was established to celebrate this beautiful variation in eyes, and to break some of the mystery surrounding it. There are many things that can cause heterochromia, some of them being nothing more than a genetic trait present from birth, others being caused by disease or injury. There are three different types of heterochromia, each one being identified by the degree to which the heterochromia exists and how it manifests. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/different-colored-eyes-day/

International Town Crier's Day In olden times, when few people were literate, and there was little access to printed media, town criers were a central part of urban living. Town criers were responsible for keeping the populace up to date with the latest news and events, and for disseminating news from the ruling classes to the wider populace. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/town-crier-day/

World Population Day Population Day aims to raise awareness of global population issues. Hunger, disease, warfare, welfare and human rights are key themes, and 2012 focuses specifically on ensuring universal access to reproductive health services. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/population-day/

National Sugar Cookie Day Sugar Cookie Day is about unleashing your inner child and celebrating the simple sugary-goodness of this traditional treat. In the 1700s a group of German settlers arrived in Pennsylvania, and by combining sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla and baking soda they created a simple yet delicious food, now known as the Sugar Cookie. Of course, the original recipe never fails to please, but these days it’s easy to give it a modern twist – adding sprinkles, chocolate chips and frosting is the easiest way to jazz it up. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/sugar-cookie-day/

Cow Appreciation Day If you’ve ever seen cows in an open field, then it’s entirely possible that you’ve seen the most peaceful and placid animal the world has to offer. They have dark brown eyes like limpid pools, and you can see that they are utterly relaxed and without care. When startled, they even rapidly return to a place of calm, like any true panic is alien to them and comes and goes as quickly as the wind changes. Cow Appreciation Day reminds us of all the things these animals bring us, milk, butter, ice cream, delicious steaks and, of course, the value of remaining calm and just enjoying life. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cow-appreciation-day/

SCUD Day stands for Savor the Comic, Unplug the Drama Day, and encourages those of us whose lives might have a touch too much drama to step back, relax, and enjoy the funnier side of life. Relaxation and humour are good for your physical and mental wellbeing, so turn the drama down a notch and enjoy a good laugh instead. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/scud-day/

Proposed St. Louis bill would require a license to give to the homeless

Homeless advocates say a bill being considered by St. Louis aldermen would bar them from helping people in need.

The measure would require a vendor’s license to distribute food, blankets or other goods on city sidewalks or parks — even if those items are being given away. It would also make it illegal to give anything away between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

New Life Evangelistic Center founder Rev. Larry Rice called a news conference Wednesday to denounce the bill.

“This would make it illegal to feed the hungry, to find somebody out on the streets at night that’s cold and offer them a blanket or a warm place to stay,” said Rice, “I find it personally horrifying.”

Tell The Truth Day aims to achieve this for just one day – presumably to allow people the rest of the year to get over insult, hurt and the result of truths which perhaps should have remained un-said!https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/tell-the-truth-day/

July 6 is last day to register

Missouri union members and their supporters should know that Wednesday, July 6, is the last day to register to vote in the critical Aug. 2 Missouri primary election. The Illinois primary was March 15.

This year the primary elections are vital because many of our Republican legislators who fought against right-to-work, paycheck deception and prevailing wage attacks are themselves under attack in their primaries by the right-wing of the Republican party and their special interest secret PACs ticked that they didn’t kowtow to the party’s anti-worker agenda.

We have to protect these friendly Republicans by asking workers to vote in their REPUBLICAN primaries this August. We understand this will be a tough move for many, but one that is critical to protecting our jobs and our wages next year when we’ll have the same fights all over again.

International Kissing Day or World Kiss Day There are as many types of kiss as there are people to pucker up, and who doesn’t love a good kiss? Whether it’s a quick friendly peck on the cheek between friends, or a long, passionate tongue-lashing between new partners, International Kissing Day celebrates this most enjoyable of activities and the part it plays in cultures throughout the world. If you haven’t shown your partner just how much you enjoy them, maybe International Kissing Day is your chance to remind them with a toe-curling kiss! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-kissing-day/

Umbrella Cover Day Umbrella covers are the little sleeves, slipcovers, cases, sheaths, that come on new umbrellas when you buy them. Made of the same material as the umbrella, they are a tight and attractive bit of packaging, but can sometimes impair the speed of releasing the umbrella in a sudden shower. People are on the fence about whether they are critical bits of umbrella apparel, or a waste of material. It is this very ambiguity that has inspired a museum of Umbrella Covers and a Guinness World Record.
