Missouri Farm Bureau, MFA, sue OSHA over vaccine mandate

NEW BLOOMFIELD — Three large Missouri employers filed a lawsuit in federal court Tuesday challenging the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's vaccine mandate for companies with more than 100 employees.

Missouri Farm Bureau, MFA Oil, and Doyle Equipment Manufacturing claim in the suit that OSHA exceeded its statutory authority in implementing the Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) requiring all employees of those companies to either provide proof of vaccination or be subject to regular COVID-19 testing. They say the rule will disrupt workforces and further stress the supply chain.

Twenty-six states, including Missouri, have filed lawsuits in six federal circuit courts objecting to the mandate, according to the New York law firm Jackson Lewis.

The issue is not whether governments have the right to impose vaccine mandates. That issue has been settled since 1905 when the Supreme Court ruled in Jacobson vs. Massachusetts that state governments can mandate vaccine.

Center of population stays in Missouri, moves west by 11.8 miles

For the fifth time, the center of population in the United States is in Missouri.

The Census Bureau on Tuesday announced it moved 11.8 miles, from near Plato, MO, to near Hartville, MO. The actual coordinates are 37.415725 N, 92.346525 W.

According to the Census Bureau, "the center of population is the point at which an imaginary, weightless, rigid, and flat (no elevation effects) surface representation of the 50 states (or 48 conterminous states for calculations made prior to 1960) and the District of Columbia would balance if weights of identical size were placed on it so that each weight represented the location of one person."

The mayor of Hartville is happy about the designation. “It's a great feeling to live in Hartville," said Mayor Rob Tucker in a release. "It has always been a town with a big heart and is now the heart of America."

What is my risk of getting COVID-19 at a family Thanksgiving celebration in Missouri?

The safety outlook for family celebrations like Thanksgiving and Christmas this year is pretty different than last year. That's due to the availability of multiple vaccines proven safe and effective at reducing the risk of getting COVID-19.

In 2020, public health officials recommended keeping holiday-season celebrations limited to immediate family. This year, the Centers for Disease Control acknowledged that "holiday traditions are important for families and children" and offered a series of tips on making celebrations like Thanksgiving safer.

Top Thanksgiving tip: Get vaccinated

The top recommendation from federal and local health officials is to get one of the COVID-19 vaccines now approved for adults and children as young as 5 years old, said Whitney Mann, head of outreach for the Springfield-Greene County Health Department.

"The best way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 this holiday season, and especially Thanksgiving as people are gathering, is to get vaccinated," Mann said. "We are advising if you're not fully vaccinated, wear a well-fitting mask over the nose and mouth."

Missouri GOP redistricting draft map would split Springfield between two state Senate districts

An early redistricting map of Missouris Senate seats drawn by Republicans on the state's commission splits Springfield into two districts — but that's likely to change as appointed bipartisan citizens panels continue work on how lines are drawn.

The proposed map, sent by Senate committee chair Marc Ellinger to Democrats, would cut a line through the city, with the west and east halves being consolidated into districts that encompass north Christian County and the rest of Greene County. The proposal is a stark departure from the last decade's maps, which has seen the entirety of Springfield in one district and the remainder of Greene County in another.

It would also significantly hamper Democrats, who see encouraging electoral trends in the area but would struggle with their voter base split between two districts. The executive director of the Missouri Democratic Party, Randy Dunn, called the attempted Springfield split "egregious."

"This is a clear sign that (Republicans) are only looking to try to preserve power, over looking out for the needs of communities of interest and ensuring fair and representative maps," Dunn said.

With COVID caseload rising, St. Louis County again at 'high' risk

ST. LOUIS COUNTY — COVID-19 caseloads in St. Louis County surged last week, driving the county back into a federal "high" risk category for community transmission, County Executive Sam Page said Monday.

The county's 7-day average rose to 189 on Sunday from 133 a week prior, an increase of 56 cases, or 42%, according to the county health department.

Doctors and health officials have worried that winter could boost coronavirus infections, as cold weather sends gatherings inside. And the virus indeed seems to be spreading more quickly now in northern states and countries, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force.

"My concern in general as we move into the holidays, as we know, families are going to gather and families are going to travel," said Dr. Shephali Wulff, an infectious disease specialist at SSM Health and task force member.
