Feminist and Pro-Diversity Songs for Young Girls (Dial-up Warning)

Please help me create a play list for my daughter's Girl Scout troop. It should be stuff that is age-appropriate for 8-11 year-olds, and isn't too "un-cool."

Thanks!

Here is some of what I have so far...

Catholic Bishops investigate the Girl Scouts

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has opened an official inquiry into the Girl Scouts to determine if troops may continue meeting at local community churches, according to a report published Friday.

The bishops are investigating the scouts to determine whether they promote contraception and abortion, The Associated Press claimed.

A letter sent by Bishop Kevin Rhoades, who chairs the committee leading the investigation, reportedly noted some “problematic relationships” with other groups like Doctors Without Borders or Oxfam.

Some conservatives have of late taken to attacking the Girl Scouts for ‘sexualizing’ young women and promoting a liberal reproductive health agenda. Even though Fox News jumped on that bandwagon, the line of attack has not been a popular one.

Jesus' Gay Marriage Sing Along! (From Landover Baptist Church)

Jesus parodies Lily Allen's song "F_ck You!" to vent against all judgmental, materialistic, warmongering Republicans who go around speaking for Him. He finds it particularly galling when this is done in politics to fight against abortion and gay rights, two topics He never actually got around to mentioning.

Obama Wades Into Washington State Marriage Debate

Obama Wades Into Washington State Marriage Debate

SEATTLE, Wash. — One day after publicly coming out in favor of same-sex marriages, President Obama waded into Washington State’s debate over the unions, telling supporters at a Seattle fundraiser to vote against an expected November referendum that would overturn a new same-sex marriage law.

“Here in Washington you’ll have the chance to make your voice heard on the issue of making sure that everybody, regardless of sexual orientation, is treated fairly. You will have a chance to weigh in on this,” Obama said inside Seattle’s Paramount Theater. “We are a nation that treats people fairly. We’re not going backwards, we’re not going backwards, we’re going forwards.”

The comments were Obama’s first on marriage since his interview with ABC News on Wednesday, when he announced a reversal of his longstanding opposition to same-sex nuptials. He said “winds of change” sweeping the country, as well as conversations with his staff, openly gay and lesbian service members, and his wife and daughters, helped change his view.

They also followed the approval Tuesday of a constitutional ban on same-sex unions in North Carolina — a move Obama opposed, but never publicly addressed.

RIPPLE EFFECT: U.S. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer Reverses Course & Supports Marriage Equality

RIPPLE EFFECT: U.S. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer Reverses Course & Jumps on Marriage Equality Bandwagon

UPDATE: Rep. Steny Hoyer has released an official statement explaining his marriage equality endorsement:

Hoyer Statement on Marriage Equality

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama’s comments yesterday in support of marriage equality:

“One of the first votes I cast as a member of the Maryland State Senate in 1967 was to repeal the anti-miscegenation statute that remained Maryland law. It was a legacy of a discriminatory history of prejudice and segregation. It was my feeling then and now that individuals have a right to choose their partners, and society must accord them that freedom.

“We now confront a variation of that miscegenation issue, and that has been what to call the relationship between two people of the same gender. The word ‘marriage’ has held a specific meaning for centuries as the union between a man and a woman. But it has also meant, in a broader sense, a commitment of one person to another, recognized by each of them and by society.

“I have believed that the phrase ‘civil union’ was an appropriate definition of a relationship that is both different and the same between two people of the same sex. And I have believed strongly that such couples must be treated equally under the law.

“Because I believe that equal treatment is a central tenet of our nation, I believe that extending the definition of marriage to committed relationships between two people, irrespective of their sex, is the right thing to do and will not, in any way, undermine the institution of marriage so important to our society nor impose a threat to any individual marriage. It will, however, extend the respect due to every one of our fellow citizens that we would want for ourselves and our children.”

###

President Barack Obama's endorsement of marriage equality is already having ripple effects across Maryland (and the nation). The Hill tonight reports that Maryland Congressman Steny Hoyer has now come out in favor of marriage equality. Notably, Mr. Hoyer also serves as the U.S. House Minority Whip, making him the #2 Democrat in the House. See an excerpt from The Hill below:

Sen. Scott Brown criticized over gay rights record

Sen. Scott Brown criticized over gay rights record
Published: Thursday, May 10, 2012, 6:20 PM Updated: Thursday, May 10, 2012, 6:37 PM

One day after President Barack Obama completed his "evolution" on the subject of same-sex marriage, coming out with striking support for marriage equality, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown found himself under fire for what critics call a "troubling" history on gay rights issues.

Elizabeth Warren, Brown's chief Democratic rival, has called for full legal equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered citizens while the Massachusetts Republican, when pushed on the topic, has said the election isn't about social issues but rather jobs and the economy.

<snip>

“Now that it’s an election year, Scott Brown is claiming to be an independent thinker, but the simple fact is that his anti-equality positions are more in line with Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and the Republican Party than Massachusetts families,” said State Rep. Liz Malia, D-Suffolk. “As someone who knew Scott Brown as a colleague in the Massachusetts legislature, I know that Scott Brown has a long, long history of opposing LGBT equality. Massachusetts wouldn't have led the way for marriage equality if Scott Brown got his way."

Malia was referring to Brown's 2004 vote for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Massachusetts after the Supreme Judicial Court legalized it a year prior,
becoming the first state in the nation to do so. Since that vote as a state senator, Brown has reiterated his opposition to same-sex marriage but called it a settled issue in Massachusetts and following the presidents statement this week, Brown said it is an issue that should be tackled by each state.

The Criminally Insane Floodgates Are Open – This Time Romney Was Threatened

The Criminally Insane Floodgates Are Open – This Time Romney Was Threatened

Has Ted Nugent has released a line of bottled water? Maybe there’s something in Glenn Beck’s survival seeds, or maybe people have simply lost their minds.

Right-wing podcaster, Ron Paul fan and Addicting Info non-fan, Adam Kokesh skirted his way around threatening the life of the presumed GOP Presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, by loosely agreeing with a fan email that actually did, in no uncertain terms, call for the death of a Presidential candidate. From BuzzFeed:

Adam Kokesh, a prominent Paul supporter who has a YouTube talk show called “Adam vs. The Man” and was backed by Paul in his 2010 congressional bid, read parts of an email from a listener contemplating whether to kill Romney.

“There is a way the nomination can be given to Ron Paul,” he read aloud. “There is a way to fix the situation we currently face with Obama versus Romney. Romney needs to die.” Kokesh says the email came from a 19-year-old in Mississippi whom he wouldn’t name.

In the video, Kokesh says of the email, “I have never endorsed such a plan. I have never suggested such a plan. But I cannot deny that the thought hasn’t crossed my mind as well as so many other libertarians and Ron Paul supporters of late.”

Kokesh says that “obviously this raises some interesting moral issues” and “it sure is tempting isn’t it, to think that you could take out one life and prevent the deaths of so many others.”

Then Kokesh sort of backtracked and said, after philosophically endorsing the idea, that it was a bad idea.

Here’s the video:

More Stories from Atheists in Christian Workplaces

More Stories from Atheists in Christian Workplaces

<snip>

Five years ago, after growing up in and being educated in church institutions, I lost my faith. Trouble is, I’m married to a pastor and have since entered church employment myself — I lost my non-church job early in the economic crisis and a number of months later was finally offered a job at a church institution. I keep the job because it provides education benefits to my children and will for some time to come.

<snip>

Also, staff meetings suck. As with any place, people often disagree on how things should be done. But inevitably some idiot is going to chime in and say “Well I believe God wants us to….” or even better, “I prayed about this last night and
God told me we should…”

<snip>

As the shift in funding sources progressed, I got more and more requests to find ways to move some of my funding ($10 million of the government money) over to the more religious side. I will admit I took some delight in draping myself in the constitution and contract and regretfully telling them I couldn’t. I am not American, which made it a bit more fun. In any case, I had that legal support, which helped a lot. My direct boss, also an atheist, was in charge of the full $40 million and worked in head office. He faced much more constant pressure on the topic of funding and was the one who taught me to reach for the contract every time it came up.

Avon water superintendent still on job despite federal guilty plea

Avon water superintendent still on job despite federal guilty plea

AVON —

Water Superintendent John Tetreault is still on the job after federal officials said he will plead guilty to two counts of providing false water quality reports to the state.

Tetreault, 55, was charged Tuesday with making false representations in federally required reports, regarding the disinfectant levels in the water at two water treatment facilities.

Tetreault agreed to plead guilty to two counts of knowingly and willfully submitting to the Department of Environmental Protection federally required reports that included materially false representations, U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said in a statement Wednesday.

<snip>

On four different dates in 2010, according to court documents, Tetreault reported that residual disinfectant levels at two water treatment facilities in town met or exceeded minimum required disinfectant levels. In fact, the residual disinfectant (chlorine) levels for each of the dates was below the required level for more than four hours at each of the facilities.
