Fighter jets intercept two small planes in Obama airspace
Tue Aug 7, 2012 1:20am EDT
(Reuters) - Two F-15 fighter jets intercepted two small planes that strayed into President Barack Obama's airspace during a campaign visit to Connecticut on Monday and the planes landed without incident, media reports said.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command said the fighter jets intercepted a small plane over Long Island, New York, at 7 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT) and followed it until it landed, and that the pilot was met by law enforcement authorities.
Roughly half an hour later, the jets intercepted a second small plane in Connecticut near New Haven, but it was allowed to continue to its destination, NORAD said in a statement.
A local NBC affiliate, NBC Connecticut, reported on its web site that the planes had entered airspace temporarily restricted during Obama's visit to the state.

A Picture of a Spacecraft Landing on Another Planet Taken by Another of Our Spacecraft...

Image Caption: NASA's Curiosity rover and its parachute were spotted by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter as Curiosity descended to the surface on Aug. 5 PDT (Aug. 6 EDT). The High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera captured this image of Curiosity while the orbiter was listening to transmissions from the rover. Curiosity and its parachute are in the center of the white box; the inset image is a cutout of the rover stretched to avoid saturation. The rover is descending toward the etched plains just north of the sand dunes that fringe "Mt. Sharp." From the perspective of the orbiter, the parachute and Curiosity are flying at an angle relative to the surface, so the landing site does not appear directly below the rover. Credit: NASA

"Unrebutted Presumption ... Tax Cheat Who Would, If Audited, Owe Us All $50 Million Plus Penalties"
From Brad DeLong:
http://delong.typepad.com/sdj/2012/08/michael-graetz-on-the-unrebutted-presumption-that-mitt-romney-is-a-tax-cheat-who-would-if-audited-owe-us-all-50-million-pl.html
MICHAEL GRAETZ ON THE UNREBUTTED PRESUMPTION THAT MITT ROMNEY IS A TAX CHEAT WHO WOULD, IF AUDITED, OWE US ALL $50 MILLION PLUS PENALTIES
It is a presumption that Romney could rebut by releasing his tax returns since he took over running the Salt Lake City olympics. Romney has chosen not to rebut the presumption.
Michael Graetz, who knows what he is talking about:
The Mysteries of Mitt Romneys Financial Records:
Some commentators have suggested, for example, that like tens of thousands of other Americans who have taken advantage of an Internal Revenue Service amnesty he might not have declared and paid taxes on his Swiss bank account. I cant imagine that he would have engaged in such blatant tax cheating. He is far too smart for that .
- snip -
(M)y bet is that if Mr. Romney filed a gift tax return for these transfers at all he put a low or even zero value on the gifts, certainly a small fraction of the price at which he would have sold the transferred assets to an unrelated party. Otherwise, he should be happy to release his gift tax returns. According to a partner at Mr. Romneys trustees law firm, valuing carried interests, such as Mr. Romneys interests in the private equity company Bain Capital, at zero for gift tax purposes was common advice given to clients like Mr. Romney in the 1990s and early 2000s.
It looks to me as though a full audit of Romney's taxes would likely produce an unpaid tax liability on the order of $50 million--plus penalties.

NASA's Curiosity rover scores touchdown on Mars
After 8 months of flight, spacecraft survives '7 minutes of terror' and lands safely

PASADENA, Calif. After eight years of planning and eight months of interplanetary travel, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory pulled off a touchdown of Super Bowl proportions, all by itself.
The spacecraft plunged through Mars' atmosphere, fired up a rocket-powered platform and lowered the car-sized, 1-ton Curiosity rover to its landing spot in 96-mile-wide (154-kilometer-wide) Gale Crater. Then the platform flew off to its own crash landing, while Curiosity sent out a text message basically saying, "I made it!"
That message was relayed by the orbiting Mars Odyssey satellite back to Earth. A radio telescope in Australia picked up the message and sent it here to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. When the blips of data appeared on the screens at JPL's mission control, the room erupted in cheers and hugs.
Because of the light-travel time between Mars and Earth, throngs of scientists and engineers along with millions who were monitoring the action via television and the Internet celebrated Curiosity's landing 14 minutes after it actually occurred.

Tens of thousands evacuated as high winds threaten music fest
By Karen Brooks
Sat Aug 4, 2012 6:17pm EDT
(Reuters) - The Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago was suspended and tens of thousands of fans were evacuated to shelters on Saturday as the city braced for dangerous storms with high winds, organizers said.
Organizers were working with emergency management officials to determine if the event could resume on Saturday. The three-day music festival is scheduled to end on Sunday evening.
"Our first priority is always the safety of our fans, staff and artists," said Shelby Meade, communications director for C3 Presents, the promoter behind Lollapalooza. "We regret having to suspend any show but safety always comes first."
The National Weather Service office in Romeoville, Illinois, which covers Chicago, recorded wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour on Saturday and had reports of gusts up to 70 mph, some measured, some estimated, said meteorologist Ben Deubelbeiss.

City Declines to Defend Sued Officer
August 2, 2012, 8:55 p.m. ET
BY SEAN GARDINER
New York City has distanced itself from a high-ranking police official accused of firing pepper spray at Occupy Wall Street protesters, taking the unusual step of declining to defend him in a civil lawsuit over the incident.
The decision means Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna also could be personally liable for financial damages that may arise out of the suit, said lawyers familiar with similar civil-rights claims.
The 29-year veteran has asked a judge to reverse the city. "He wasn't doing this as Anthony Bologna, mister. He was doing this as Anthony Bologna, deputy inspector, NYPD," said his lawyer.
