Study: Reading May Extend Lifespan (hmm, Trump, by his own admission, doesn't read)

That reading is good for your brain has been known for a long time, but a new study shows that picking up a book regularly could lengthen your life.

Writing in the journal Social Science and Medicine, researchers from Yale University said it doesn’t really matter what you read, as long as you read. The longer, the better.

Researchers reached their conclusions by looking at data from 3,635 health survey participants. They were broken down into three groups — those reading up to three-and-a-half hours per week, those who read more, and those who didn’t read at all.

After factoring in age, gender, education and economic status, they found that readers lived two years longer than non-readers.

Furthermore, they found that those who read up to 3.5 hours were 17 percent less likely to die over the next dozen years, with those reading longer than that were 23 percent less likely to die.

A Trump policy adviser told CNBC's John Harwood the speech would be a "vision proposal" and that details would come later.

On Monday, Trump economic adviser Dan Dimicco said the speech will focus on four main areas — taxation, regulatory reform, trade and energy. He said it will include new details.

"I think you're going to find out that it's a little bit more than just a straight visionary speech, but certainly it will be wrapped up in an overall vision of economic growth, and economic growth that's more than twice what we've been experiencing since 2009," Dimicco told "Squawk Box."

Hospital Bombing in Pakistani City of Quetta Kills at Least 54 (suicide bomber)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — At least 54 people were killed on Monday in the restive Pakistani city of Quetta when an explosion, apparently caused by a suicide bomber, struck a hospital where dozens of lawyers had gathered to condemn the killing of a prominent colleague.


Officials in the southwestern city said that at least 50 people were wounded, most of them critically, and that the death toll was likely to rise.


The blast came after the shooting early Monday of Bilal Anwar Kasi, president of the Baluchistan Bar Association, by unknown attackers. Local news reports said that he was killed by men on a motorcycle as he was on his way to court. As the news of Mr. Kasi’s death spread through Quetta, dozens of lawyers went to Civil Hospital, where his body had been taken for an autopsy.


As they protested the killing, a powerful blast ripped through the entrance to the hospital’s emergency department, leading to widespread panic. Television footage showed scores of lawyers running for cover as gunfire echoed in the background.

My mother was an early feminist and would undoubtedly be excited by HRC's campaign.

She died a little over 2 years ago. She was 94.

She was in charge, in her twenties of declassification of Nazi propaganda at the OWI- among other duties. She was a lifelong democrat, involved in state politics in CT, where she lived for the last 53 years of her life. She was particularly involved with getting Ellla Grasso elected as governor.

At the age of 6, she moved with her family to Europe, living in France and Italy, learning several languages, and acquiring a lifelong love and mastery of French cooking. At 16, she returned to the states to attend college.

As an avid reader with an uncommonly keen memory, she cultivated her strong interest in history, literature and politics her entire life. With the onset of World War II, her language skills led to a job at the French desk of the United States Office of War Information (OWI) in New York City, where she carried out simultaneous translation of radio programming for broadcast into France and worked closely with French expatriate writers on information and propaganda campaigns, also holding responsibility for the declassification of Nazi propaganda. After the war, she continued on at Voice of America, which had been established by OWI in 1942.


She became active in the League of Women Voters and the local and state organizations of the Democratic Party, serving as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1976. Subsequently, she became involved with the New York (blanked that out)serving on the board of directors for many years. She traveled extensively, with particular fondness for London and Paris, where she was a member of the Société Saint-Simon.

Trump's Chumps. His economic plan doesn't help them- it fucks them.

ECONOMISTS love to debunk the analogy that is often drawn between the government’s budget and that of a household. (Much of the government’s debt is held by its own taxpayers; households borrow exclusively from outside sources.) But there is another, equally flawed analogy, to which Donald Trump subscribes: that writing economic policy is comparable to making business decisions. Mr Trump’s thirteen-strong team of economic advisers, announced on Friday, is packed full of rich businessmen (and only men). Just three have relevant backgrounds in economics.

Does high-quality economic advice matter? Mr Trump’s ludicrous tax plan—which is likely to be revised tomorrow—suggests it does. The plan achieved the unlikely feat of being both hugely expensive and yet startlingly inefficient. Instead of combining tax-cuts with measures to broaden the tax base—a combination tax-reformers have long called for—it shrinks the tax base slightly. And Mr Trump omitted the growth-boosting reforms to the corporation tax that conservative economists favour. The Tax Foundation, a think-tank, found that Mr Trump’s cuts, which cost $12 trillion over a decade before accounting for economic growth, would give only slightly more juice to the economy than Paul Ryan’s plan, which comes at one-fifth of the up-front cost.

Who knows whether the likes of Harold Hamm, an oil magnate on Mr Trump’s team, or Dan DiMicco, a steelmaker, could have written a better plan. But almost any economist could have done. Unfortunately Mr Trump’s whole campaign is based on the notion that financial success begets policymaking success, regardless of expertise. (Ironically, though, one member of his team is a one-hit-wonder: John Paulson, a hedge-fund manager, made a killing better against subprime mortgages in the crisis but has performed disappointingly since.)

You know what I haven't heard Trump say lately? "We're gonna win so much,

we're gonna win so big, you're gonna get sick of winning".

He used to say that all the time. Now it's whinging non-stop about how the election is "rigged" against him.

I know it's early to grow overconfident, but I just don't buy that he has enough self-discipline (let alone a functional political operation), to win- barring some horrific event that somehow favors him.
