New Hampshire's GOP Climate Hawks Caught On Tape

GOP Climate Hawks Caught On Tape
New Hampshire Republicans fed up with anti-science rhetoric want their party back.

They are a species trying to bolster their waning numbers: GOP climate hawks. Recently I'd heard there would be a gathering of these elusive creatures—Republicans who believe that climate change is real, and a serious threat. So I grabbed my camera to document their behavior in the field. They may be in the political wilderness these days, but they are making their call heard ahead of the all-important New Hampshire primary.

“Newt the Destroyer“

David Corn at Mother Jones invokes “Newt the Destroyer“:

In a bitter and spiteful concession speech last night in Iowa—Kanye West could do no worse—the former House speaker, who finished fourth, signaled a shift in his mission. He would no longer be running to obtain the Republican presidential nomination; he would be campaigning to obliterate Mitt Romney. He would be Sherman; the former Massachusetts governor would be Georgia.

If Gingrich does pursue this march—and there are two debates this weekend in New Hampshire in which Gingrich can be a suicide bomber—Gingrich will be reaching the peak of his 30-year career as a Republican demolition man. And now his target will be the candidate the GOP establishment believes possesses the best chance of unseating President Barack Obama…

Mr. Santorum’s stop in Sioux City was his first campaign rally on a busy New Year’s Day of campaigning — both on the stump and in the news media. He appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday morning, gaining the kind of national television exposure that has eluded him for months as he languished at single digits in the polls.

He became emotional at times during his remarks at the Daily Grind, a coffee shop a few blocks from the Missouri River, especially when he spoke of the meaning his campaign had to his family. Criticizing President Obama for “absolutely un-American activities,” he said he was running to ensure he left the country in better shape for his children.

“This is the most important election of my life. This is where America’s freedom is at stake,” he said. “I’m asking you to stand up for your honor.”

His listeners greeted him with a hearty round of applause. And as he made his way through the crowd, stopping to shake hands and sign autographs, he wore a beaming smile on his face.

A federal judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit challenging the legalization of medical marijuana in Arizona.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer filed a lawsuit against her own state’s medical marijuana law in May. She claimed that state employees could be in jeopardy because the state law conflicts with federal laws, despite Arizona’s former top federal prosecutor saying publicly the federal government has “no intention of targeting or going after people who are implementing or who are in compliance with state law.”

“It is unconscionable for Governor Brewer to continue to force very sick people to needlessly suffer by stripping them of the legal avenue through which to obtain their vital medicine,” said Ezekiel Edwards of the American Civil Liberties Union, which had urged the dismissal of the lawsuit.

“Today’s ruling underscores the need for state officials to stop playing politics and implement the law as approved by a majority of Arizona voters so that thousands of patients can access the medicine their doctors believe is most effective for them.”

Romney Camp Admits That Its Bain Job Creation Number Is Bogus

Romney Camp Admits That Its Bain Job Creation Number Is Bogus
By Pat Garofalo posted from ThinkProgress Economy on Jan 4, 2012 at 5:20 pm

Mitt Romney, last night’s Iowa caucus winner, has been on the campaign trail claiming that the private equity firm he ran, known as Bain Capital, was responsible for creating loads of jobs.
Romney responded to criticism about his time at Bain by saying, “I’m very happy in my former life; we helped create over 100,000 new jobs.”

When a group of Romney backers ran an ad making the same claim, they were unable to back up the number with data. And as it turns out, the Romney camp can’t either, as it admitted that the statistic is nothing but cherry-picked job growth from a few companies that did well after they were bought by Bain:

*****(Romney spokesman Eric) Fehrnstrom says the 100,000 figure stems from the growth in jobs from three companies that Romney helped to start or grow while at Bain Capital: Staples (a gain of 89,000 jobs), The Sports Authority (15,000 jobs), and Domino’s (7,900 jobs).

*****This tally obviously does not include job losses from other companies with which Bain Capital was involved — and are based on current employment figures, not the period when Romney worked at Bain. (Indeed, Romney made his comments in response to a former employee of American Pad & Paper Co. who says he lost his job after Bain Capital took it private.)

Gingrich Lies About Dope-Growing Founding Fathers to New Hampshire Pothead

Settled in to roost in New Hampshire for the next week, Republican candidate Newt Gingrich was faced with some pretty zany questions Wednesday afternoon during a town hall meeting with his potential suitors. Talking health care, asteroid travel, and marijuana, faraway-galaxy-dwelling Gingrich was, as Observer reporter Paul Harris noted, “brought down to earth” by the relative far-outness of some of the audience members. One attendee asked for the candidate’s thoughts on legal homegrown pot, to which Gingrich harked back to his knowledge base, HISTORY, and dropped some knowledge (actually misinformation! love that history!) on how Founding Fathers Thomas Jefferson and George Washington would have felt about marijuana.

Said Newt:

“I think Jefferson or George Washington would have rather strongly discouraged you from growing marijuana, and their techniques of dealing with it would have been more violent.”

oh really?

Both Washington and Jefferson tried growing hemp on their Virginia farms, with mixed success. Washington used some of what he grew to make hemp clothing worn by his slaves. However, U.S. hemp exported to Britain often was of such poor quality that it couldn’t be sold, and Washington was never able to turn a profit on the crop despite sustained effort. Jefferson also seems to have grown hemp strictly for local consumption, from which we deduce he couldn’t make money at it either. In short, not only were Washington and Jefferson marijuana farmers, they were unsuccessful marijuana farmers.

Exclusive: Mitt Romney, Student Protester Of The WORST Kind

Exclusive: Mitt Romney, Student Protester

The date was May 20, 1966. A group of students had taken over the office of Stanford President Wallace Sterling, protesting against the institution of a test that was among the first steps toward the Vietnam-era draft.

....................

"We were there to get an education and these people holding the Administration hostage was antithetical to that," he recalled to BuzzFeed in his first interview about the day.

As the roughly 150 counter-protesters held signs and chatted with passing students, a tall, neatly-dressed 19-year old Coulter had never seen before approached him.

"He walked up to me and said that he had some experience with the press, and that he would handle the press for me if I wanted him to," Coulter recalled. "I said fine, because I was busy running the demonstration."

Most of the missionaries, though, were also relieved that their service meant a draft deferment.

"I am sorry, but no one was excited to go and get killed in Vietnam," Mr. Hansen said, acknowledging, "In hindsight, it is easy to be for the war when you don't have to worry about going to Vietnam."

Mr. Romney, though, said that he sometimes had wished he were in Vietnam instead of France. "There were surely times on my mission when I was having a particularly difficult time accomplishing very little when I would have longed for the chance to be serving in the military," he said in an interview, "but that was not to be."

While many Mormons -- and eventually, some of his fellow missionaries -- enlisted, Mr. Romney got a student deferment after returning from France. When the draft lottery was introduced in December 1969, he drew a high enough number -- 300 -- that he would never be called up. NY Times
