Hot damn, ladies and friends of ladies - Look What Happens - When "Sluts" Vote

Hot damn, ladies and friends of ladies. Look at what we did this week:

?1350670955

We delivered a second term for President Barack Obama;

We not only kept control of the Senate, but increased our numbers;

We are sending more women to Congress than ever before;

We shrank the rape caucus, including Todd "legitimate rape" Akin and Richard "rape babies are intended by God" Mourdock; and

We showed that the gender gap is real, it's big, and it's not to be taken lightly or for granted—by either party.

In other words, we kicked ass.

None of panelists on Scarborough-not Joe-not David Gregory-not Chuck Todd, none dared to answer...

Frum on Morning Joe: a remarkable 15 minutes of television

by David Atkins

Former Bush speechwriter David Frum made a remarkable appearance on Morning Joe, saying things even many progressives often won't come out and say. The video is below.

He begins with this:

Mitt Romney's message is I am going to take away Medicare from everybody under 55, I'm going to cut Medicaid for everybody but about a third, and I'm going to do that to finance a giant tax cut for me and my friends, and the reason I'm doing that is because half the country contribute nothing to the national endeavor.

Then about four minutes in, something even more attention-grabbing after Scarborough bloviated about Thatcher and Reagan appealing to the common man:

Since the loss of the election, we have heard an enormous amount of discussion from Republicans on television and newspaper columns about immigration as an issue...but all of us who are allowed to participate in this conversation, we all have health insurance. And the fact that millions of Americans don't have health insurance, they don't get to be on television. And it is maybe a symptom of a broader problem, not just the Republican problem, that the economic anxieties of so many Americans are just not part of the national discussion at all. I mean, we have not yet emerged from the greatest national catastrophe, the greatest economic catastrophe since the Great Depression. And what are we talking about? The deficit and the debt. And these are important problems, but they're a lot easier to worry about if you are wealthier than you were in 2008, which most of the people on television now are again, if you are securely employed, which most of the people on television now are. But that's not true for 80% of America. And the Republican Party, the opposition party, needed to find some way to give voice to real urgent economic concerns held by middle class Americans. Latinos, yes, but Americans of all ethnicities.

None of the panelists on Scaraborough--not Joe himself, not David Gregory, not Chuck Todd, none of them--dared to answer Frum's devastating indictment of them. Not of the Republican Party, but of them. It was uncomfortable, and then blithely ignored.

******************

After five full minutes of inside baseball speculation on Republican leadership games during which Frum looked like he might pull a Howard Beale (check out the look on Frum's face at 11:09 of the video!), he finally got a chance to speak again:

I believe the Republican Party is a party of followership. The problem with the Republican leaders is that they're cowards....The real locus of the problem is the Republican activist base and the Republican donor base. They went apocalyptic over the past four years. And that was exploited by a lot of people in the conservative world. I won't soon forget the lupine smile that played over the head of a major conservative institution when he told me that our donors think the apocalypse has arrived. Republicans have been fleeced and exploited and lied to by a conservative entertainment complex....Because the followers, the donors and the activists are so mistaken about the nature of the problems the country faces the nature--I mean, it's just a simple question. I went to Tea Party rallies and I would ask this question: "have taxes gone up or down in the past four years?" They could not answer that question correctly. Now it's true that taxes will go up if the President is re-elected. That's why we're Republicans. But you have to know that taxes have not gone up in the past. And "do we spend a trillion dollars on welfare?" Is that true or false? It is false. But it is almost universally believed. That means that the leaders have no space to operate.

I’m Black and I Want More “Stuff” and “Things”: An Open Letter to Bill O’Reilly

I’m Black and I Want More “Stuff” and “Things”: An Open Letter to Bill O’Reilly
by Jesse Hagopian

Dear Mr. Bill O’Reilly,

On election night, as it became increasingly clear that Mitt Romney was going to lose the election to Barack Obama, I watched Fox News host Megyn Kelly ask you, “How do you think we got to this point?”

You responded by saying,

Because it’s a changing country. The demographics are changing. It’s not a traditional America anymore and there are 50 percent of the voting public who want stuff, they want things. And who is going to give them things? President Obama. The white establishment is now the minority. And the voters — many of them — feel that this economic system is stacked against them and they want stuff. You’re going to see a tremendous Hispanic vote for President Obama, overwhelming Black vote for President Obama and women will probably break President Obama’s way. People feel that they are entitled to things. And which candidate between the two is going to give them things?

It is my hope that a great artist takes brush to canvas to capture the contours of your furrowed brow when you uttered the words, “It’s not a traditional America anymore.” It was a look of depraved beauty that made my heart sing. Watching you, Mr. O’Reilly, before a national audience, realize that all of your racist lies and hatred could not change the fact that people of color exist and will not by bowed by your insane denunciations, was an inspiration to me and millions of others.

Yet, on one account, O’Reilly, you are utterly correct: Black people definitely do want “stuff” and “things” as you so eloquently put it. And I am one of them. To very loosely paraphrase the late rap crooner of the West Coast, Warren G: I want it all, money, fast public transportation, fully funded public schools, Medicare for all, social security, an end to all wars, and every damn thang.

While you are right that Black people do want “stuff” and “things,” your paranoid fears (refracted through the racially outdated retina you use to view the president) that we will receive a cornucopia of benefits from President Obama is merely another thing about the election you incorrectly predicted.

Obama has refused to champion the causes of raising the minimum wage, refused to establish a jobs program to address the millions of unemployed, ignored legislation to protect public sector labor unions, and ignored the mass- incarceration crisis that has left one in thirty-one Americans is in the custody of the prison system, with more Black men today behind bars today than were slaves on plantations in 1850. As the African American radio broadcaster and author Tavis Smiley said recently, “Reagan wouldn’t say ‘AIDS.’ Bush wouldn’t say ‘climate change.’ Will Obama say ‘prison-industrial complex’?”

President Obama recently said of his plans for deficit reduction, "I'm not wedded to every detail of my plan. I'm open to compromise. I'm open to new ideas" expressing his willingness to begin his second term by striking a "grand bargain"--an effort to reduce the federal deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years, mainly through spending cuts, including in the government's most popular programs, Social Security and Medicare.

Mr. O’Reilly, while your associates in investment banks got golden parachutes after sabotaging the global economy; while your compatriots in corporate suites, from General Electric to Exxon, threw lavish parties to celebrate not paying a dime in taxes; while your fellowship of trust-fund friends inherited millions from their families without putting in a day of honest work; while your friends in the Pentagon sit in air conditions war rooms and send other peoples’ kids off to die in wars in the Middle East; while all of this is happening, Black and Latino communities were, and remain, in economic free-fall. Official Black unemployment stands at14.3 percent (and the real numbers are even higher). Fewer than half of young Black men have jobs. Some 25 percent of Blacks and Latinos languish below the official poverty line, and more than a third of Black and Latino children live in poverty. The only way Black folks and people of color will obtain any measure of decent living is the only way we ever have: with a lot of hard work.

It was the desertion of hundreds of thousands of slaves during the Civil War, in what could be called the largest general strike in U.S. history, and their enlistment in the Union Army that won the war for the North and put an end to slavery. It was the filling of jails in South by rebellious Black high school students who were willing to be arrested at demonstrations that finally broke the back of Jim Crow segregation. And once again, as the great abolitionist Fredrick Douglass pointed out so long ago, without struggle there will be no progress.

So, Mr. O’Reilly, I’ll make you a deal. If President Obama bestows upon me the “stuff” and “things” that Black people and all working people so desperately need in this country – a national jobs program, Medicare for all, a strengthened social security system, an end to the mass incarceration – I will send you a personal letter of apology and directly deposit all of monetary value from the benefits I receive into your bank account.

Sincerely,

Jesse Hagopian

P.S. If President Obama, in the name of “grand compromise” with the Republicans, continues to pursue an agenda of austerity and policies that favor the wealthy, perhaps you could then deposit the monetary advantage you receive into my bank account? Do we have a deal?

King County, WA (Seattle area) prosecutor dismissing all misdemeanor pot cases

The King County Prosecutor’s Office says it will be dismissing all of its misdemeanor marijuana possession cases as a result of the passage of Initiative 502 legalizing marijuana possession of one ounce or less in Washington state.

The decision will impact 175 King County cases involving individuals age 21 and older accused of possessing one ounce or less of marijuana, said Dan Donohoe, spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office.

With the passage of I-502, marijuana possession of one ounce or less by individuals age 21 and older will become legal in the state on Dec. 6.

King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg said that dismissing these cases is the right thing to do in light of Tuesday’s vote.

As Obama lays down marker on taxes, labor has his back

Conservatives such as Grover Norquist are already pressuring Republicans to stand firm against tax hikes for the rich. So the question now is what kind of pressure the left will mount to ensure the fiscal cliff talks adhere to the principles Obama laid out.

Along those lines, I’m told that SEIU, AFSCME, and the National Education Association are putting together a major push, including TV ads, to pressure Congress to adopt a fiscal cliff approach that doesn’t do any harm to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security — and includes higher taxes from the wealthy. If necessary, the campaign might target Dems who stray from these principles.

“We believe this election was a crystal clear expression by working people in this country that the rich need to pay their fair share,”
SEIU president Mary Kay Henry told me in an interview. “The new majority needs to continue to hold everyone accountable — Democrats and Republicans — by making sure we back the president’s vision for the country.”

Liberals are sure to be cheered by Obama’s remarks today. He led with an argument about tax fairness, and made a moral case for an economic blueprint that places some of the burden of deficit reduction on the wealthy, so seniors and middle class families don’t end up doing all the sacrificing. He noted that the will of the people, as expressed on Tuesday, had backed him up — and told members of Congress it’s time they get in line with the will of the people, too.
