If Guns are Outlawed, Only Morons Who Are Outlaws Will Accidentally Shoot Each Other

Today is “Gun Appreciation Day.” An event created by right winger with penis issues, and so called because “Insensitivity To First Graders Being Slaughtered Wholesale Day” doesn’t roll as glibly off the tongue. It also gives the game away, but I digress.

Five different people have been wounded in accidental shootings at three different gun shows today. ”Emergency personnel had to be called to the scene of the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, North Carolina after a gun accidentally discharged and shot two people *at the show’s safety check-in booth just after 1 pm. Both victims were transported to an area hospital, and the Raleigh Fire Department announced that the show would be closed for the rest of the day.”

Two similar incidents occurred at entirely separate gun shows in the Midwest, one in the Cleveland suburb of Medina, Ohio and the other at the state fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana. In Ohio, the local ABC affiliate reports that one individual was brought to a hospital by EMS, and in Indiana Channel 8 WISH says that an individual shot himself in the hand while trying to reload his gun in the show parking lot. That brings the tally to 4 victims of gun violence so far at three different gun shows during the country’s first Gun Appreciation Day.

Seattle Clergy Letter To "High Noon" Gun Rally Attendees: "Shockingly Insensitive To MLK's Message"

Seattle clergy have written a letter “decrying as ‘shockingly insensitive’ a pro-gun rally scheduled at ‘high noon’ in Olympia WA, during the weekend of the national holiday honoring assassinated civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.”

“We find it shockingly insensitive to Dr. King’s message, and contemptuous of his legacy, to celebrate the very instrument of his assassination during a holiday weekend dedicated to his memory,” said a draft of the clergy statement. “The way to honor Dr. King’s memory is to condemn violence and to oppose any and all racial hatred, and we call on gun rights activists to join us in doing this rather than in focusing on the very means of Dr. King’s murder.”

The Guns Across America event, one of 50 demonstrations scheduled for state capitals across the country, has been promoted as peaceful, civil and responsible. “We will not engage in any negative activities,” supporter Matthew Piquet said in an advisory earlier this week. As to packing heat, the advice was: “Responsible legal carry is permitted and encouraged. Handguns only.”

NRA Caught In Another Big Fat LIE

Last week there was a big commotion about that NRA ad calling the President an ‘elitist hypocrite’ for sending his daughters to a school with armed guards while denying that same armed protection to kids around the country.

Most people focused on how disgusting it was to drag the President’s daughters into a political attack on the president or how the president actually wasn’t opposed to schools having armed guards and a bunch of other stuff. After all, the leadership of the NRA is one of the most rancid players in US politics. But it turns out the critics weren’t aiming high enough with the critiques.

Everyone basically took it for granted that it must be true that Sidwell Friends School, the school in question, has armed guards. After all, the President’s daughters go there, as do the kids of a lot of other high profile people in DC. So it does seem sort of plausible. And why would they say it if it weren’t true? Famous last words.

But it turns out the whole thing was a lie. Glenn Kessler, the Washington Post’s factchecker who I’ve frequently criticized on other matters, picked up the phone and called Sidwell and they emphatically deny the claim. According to Ellis Turner, Associate head of Sidwell Friends, “Sidwell Friends security officers do not carry guns.”

Yeah, both parties compete mightily to appear to be the greater champion of our freedoms, but the only thing that still has bipartisan support in Washington is not giving a shit about privacy.

And when you talk to the NRA types, as I like to do down at my local moose lodge, they actually believe that what protects their rights isn't laws, or courts, it's that they have a gun. They think that's what keeps the government from going too far. Without guns, Obama would become an emperor and force everyone to gay marry, but he can't because a guy in Kentucky named Skeeter has a .22.

Except that, you know, while you guys were buying guns to protect your other guns, sittin' up on the porch there, waitin' for Obama's Negro Army to come confiscate your weapons and go all Django Unchained on your ass — that's when we lost all the stuff in the Bill of Rights, about trials and juries and warrants.

You see, the Redcoats — they never wanted your gun. They wanted your liberty. And that's why the Founding Fathers said you could have the gun, dumbass! (2011) Blast From The Past: New NRA Prez David Keene's Son Is a Convicted Road-Rage Shooter

That role caused the NRA some anguish when Keene's son, David Michael Keene, was arrested for a road rage incident in which he allegedly fired a gun at another motorist on the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The round fired shattered the rear window of the victim's car, lodging into the driver's seat, coming within inches of hitting him, according to police reports.
