Pulse nightclub was co-founded by woman whose brother died from AIDS

Pulse more than 'just another gay club'

One of the owners of the gay nightclub where multiple people were shot early Sunday in Orlando started the club to promote awareness about the area's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Her brother died from AIDS.

Barbara Poma opened Pulse on Orange Avenue in Orlando with her friend and co-founder Ron Legler in 2004. It hosts nightly themed performances as well as a monthly program of LGBT-related educational events.

Pulse refers to itself as "not just another gay club." Saturday night was Latin night.

The Script

A day after Christina Grimmie was murdered, at least 20 people were killed during yet another gun rampage. If you’re now planning to spend the next couple of weeks in bed with your head under a pillow, I don’t blame you. Here’s what you’ll miss.

1. Speculation about the shooter and his motives.
1a. If the shooter was or could have conceivably been Muslim (i.e. not white), start the terrorism narrative.
1b. If the shooter was white, start the mental illness narrative.
2. Since the shooting took place in a gay nightclub, Broadcast News Funnel will ask various Christianists to stop molesting tomato bushes and come deafen the sound tech with their patented God’s wrath shriek.
2a. People who are actually concerned about anti-GLBTQ violence in the U.S. will be invited to try and outshout Christianist scum beings so both sides of the mass murder conundrum can be represented.
3. Gundamentalists will solemnly declare that if only more people in a crowded nightclub had been packing heat gibber flibber glorp.
3a. It still won’t be legal to lock the Gundamentalists and the Christianists in a room and toss a hornets’ nest through the transom.
4. President Obama will give a speech.
4a. I imagine Clinton will say something as well.
4b. Holy fuck, Trump is going to weigh in too, isn’t he?

Maybe make it three weeks.

Sister of Stanford rape victim: Brock Turner tried to force himself on me too

In the sheriff’s report, Jane Doe 2 said she, her sister and friends had been in the outside patio area of the fraternity house where they met three guys. One of the guys was more aggressive, she said, and came up to her and one point and “started making out on her cheek” before going for her lips. She laughed in shock and the guy left.

A short time later, while she was talking to a friend, the “aggressive guy” came back and tried to make out with her again. He grabbed her from in front, at her lower waist, and kissed her on the lips, the report said. She said she had to leave and wiggled out from his hold.

In her impact statement, Jane Doe 2 addressed her encounter with Turner before her sister’s assault: “In my head, I still have an image of the assailant right before he tried to kiss me earlier in the evening; the face of the man who assaulted my sister, is burned into my memory.”

According to prosecutors, Turner preyed on the victims.

“Even though he was twice rejected by Jane Doe 2, he felt it was acceptable to pursue her sister, Jane Doe 1, later that night when she was alone and inebriated. He purposefully took her to an isolated area, away from all the party goers, to an area that was dimly lit, and assaulted her on the ground behind a dumpster. He deliberately took advantage of the fact that she was so intoxicated that she could not form a sentence, let alone keep her eyes open or stand. This behavior is not typical assaultive behavior that you find on campus, but it is more akin to a predator who is searching for prey. The prey in the case was a young woman who drank too much and was unable to protect herself.”

Too funny! Attendance at Donald Trump rallies plummets as his message goes further off the rails

Donald Trump seemed to be attracting oversized crowds of conservatives to his campaign rallies during the republican party primary race precisely because his message was so overtly bigoted and racist. But whether because the enthusiasm of the primary season has waned of its own accord, or because Trump has finally taken things too far for even the more ardent of conservatives, attendance at his events has plummeted this past week to the point that he’s now speaking to largely empty venues in some cities.

The first sign of trouble began during a Trump rally in Richmond, Virginia. The venue had a capacity of around twelve thousand, but reporters on site estimated the crowd as being somewhere between two and three thousand people. Some observers wrote it off as a fluke or an overestimation of local popularity on the part of the advance team who chose the venue. However the troublingly low attendance has subsequently continued elsewhere.

Donald Trump held another rally today in Tampa, and those in attendance reported on Twitter that attendance was also significantly below capacity and expectations. That marks the second time this week that Trump’s turnout has proven to be short of what had been expected, and points to a potential pattern which will need to be observed going forward.

Trump’s insistence on doubling down on his racist comments about the judge in the Trump University case has been sharply rebuked by all sides, including a number of republican leaders who are now trying to distance themselves from his campaign. It’s not clear if this seeming last straw is serving to dampen attendance at his events, as his sharpening racism helps to narrow the number of people who find that they can identify with his remarks. It’s a pattern that’s worth continuing to watch in the coming days and weeks.

DL Hughley: ‘If Donald Trump Was Your Child You Would Whip His Ass’

D.L. Hughley calls it:
Paul Ryan is saying a racist is better than a liberal for president. That's because racism doesn't affect him. If you go along with a racist...you're a co-racist.
Bam. Bam. Bam.

If Donald Trump was your child and he acted like that, you’d whip his ass, you would not tolerate that. And for expediency’s sake, we’re tolerating a man who is beneath the presidency of the United States of America. I love Hillary Clinton, I won’t deny that, but there are things she could do I would deny her my support right now. Tomorrow. And that is, to me, what character is. I see these people and they say things that are so insulting and then say, well, at least his ideas are better than these other ideas. If you are surrounded by people who think it’s okay to be comfortable at rallies and say the things they say, that you say the things you say out loud and nobody brings you to account… If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it says the n-word behind your back.
