Make no mistake: The NRA paved the way for the Orlando attack

Make no mistake: The NRA paved the way for the Orlando attack, during which Omar Mateen killed at least 49 people.

Here's how:

—The NRA's lobbyists and political allies fought for a raft of permissive state gun laws, turning Florida in particular into the "Gunshine State."

—The gun lobby's gusher of campaign cash and threats of electoral retribution cowed our federal leaders into inaction on gun control, even in the face of the slaughter of first graders, an assassination attempt on a member of Congress, and the rise of home-grown terrorists.

—The NRA's politicking has warped the Constitution itself. The late Antonin Scalia authored the 2008 Supreme Court decision that recast the Second Amendment as a guarantee of individual gun rights. Today, the NRA's top Senate allies are blocking a Supreme Court nominee who could limit or reverse that decision.

—The combined effect? Military-derived weapons are ubiquitous, cheap and simple to obtain — even for individuals on the FBI's terrorist watch list. The NRA's unhinged gun advocacy has created a soft underbelly to our homeland security that radicals are exploiting to inflict mass murder.

Think how confused Trump must be about African geography.

Belgium's about the size of Maine. That's a big city!

While bringing up recent terror attacks in Europe, Trump stated that “Belgium is a beautiful city.” He almost certainly meant the capital, Brussels.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL): "If you use an AK-47 to hunt a deer....."

While holding the floor, Durbin, like many of his colleagues, discussed the lethal nature of the type of assault weapon used in Orlando, San Bernardino, and Newtown.

“If you use an AK-47 to hunt a deer, you should stick to fishing,” he said.

He also discussed the high rate of gun violence in Chicago, the largest city in his home state. He pointed to the gun show loophole which allows roughly 40 percent of gun purchasers to buy a firearm without a background check online or through private sellers at gun shows.

This past weekend, while 49 people were being shot and killed in Orlando, 8 people were killed and 36 injured by guns in Chicago. Among those shot was a 5-year-old girl, a Chicago Police Department spokesperson said.

Breaking Mad - The Republican Party is addicted to whiteness.

BY JEET HEER
June 16, 2016

Imagine an autopsy that concludes the cause of death was a drug overdose. After the funeral, distraught family members assemble to talk about how they could have prevented such a senseless tragedy. Then, after brief reflection, they all decide to start mainlining heroin.

The GOP is addicted to whiteness, a psychological drug it started ingesting in the early 1960s with the encouragement of Goldwater conservatives, who argued that the party could win over the traditionally Democratic white South by resisting the civil rights movement. Richard Nixon was one of the Republicans who initially had trepidations. “If Goldwater wins his fight,” he told Ebony magazine in 1962, “our party would eventually become the first major all-white political party. And that isn’t good. That would be a violation of GOP principles.”

..............

Consider how much worse the GOP’s whiteness addiction has grown in just the past four years. Mitt Romney was a powder-cocaine Republican, a socially acceptable xenophobe offering a high that made whites feel like masters of the universe: Still in charge here! Trump, by contrast, is dealing meth—a trailer-park drug you take when you’ve given up hope and just want to get rip-roaring stoned. Compared to the country-club slickness of Romney’s cocaine conservatism, Trump’s meth-head politics are at least more honest. Instead of Nixonian euphemisms about law and order, or Reaganite winks about welfare queens, Trump offers the intoxicating thrill of telling protesters and immigrants—them—to get the hell out. It’s an intense high. And the aftermath will be tooth-rottingly ugly.

The New York Times’ editorial board tethered conservatives to the “hatred toward gays and lesbians”

The New York Times’ editorial board tethered conservatives to the “hatred toward gays and lesbians” that the Orlando shooter harbored, noting that “hate crimes don’t happen in a vacuum.” The paper excoriated “Republican politicians who see (anti-gay] prejudice as something to exploit, not extinguish,” saying they have created an environment “where bigotry is allowed to fester, where minorities are vilified and where people are scapegoated for political gain.”

From the June 15 New York Times editorial:

Omar Mateen shattered the tenuous, hard-fought sense of personal safety that many gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans have begun to feel as the movement for equality has made significant gains in recent years. His bullets and the blood he left behind that early morning were a reminder that in many corners of the country, gay and transgender people are still regarded as sinners and second-class citizens who should be scorned.

While the precise motivation for the rampage remains unclear, it is evident that Mr. Mateen was driven by hatred toward gays and lesbians. Hate crimes don’t happen in a vacuum. They occur where bigotry is allowed to fester, where minorities are vilified and where people are scapegoated for political gain. Tragically, this is the state of American politics, driven too often by Republican politicians who see prejudice as something to exploit, not extinguish.

[...]

Since the marriage ruling, several Republican-led state legislatures and Republican governors and federal lawmakers have redoubled their fight against legal protections for people on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. So far this year, more than 200 anti-L.G.B.T. bills have been introduced in 34 states.

[...]

That restrooms have become such a fixation, particularly at the state level, is a worrying reminder of the entrenched stigma the community continues to face. The loudest advocates of this odious effort have been Gov. Pat McCrory of North Carolina and Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, who has worked in lock step with the Texas attorney general, Ken Paxton. Meanwhile, Gov. Phil Bryant of Mississippi in April signed into law a bill that allows discrimination against L.G.B.T. people in schools and the workplace.

It’s hard to say how many politicians take these positions as a matter of principle and how many do so because it has proved to be an effective way in the past to raise money and turn out the vote. As the funerals are held for those who perished on Sunday, lawmakers who have actively championed discriminatory laws and policies, and those who have quietly enabled them with votes, should force themselves to read the obituaries and look at the photos. The 49 people killed in Orlando were victims of a terrorist attack. But they also need to be remembered as casualties of a society where hate has deep roots.

The Dalai Lama brushes off anti-immigration GOP: ‘All white Americans come from outside’

“You’re in essence a refugee,” Baier said. “You have now in Tibet an immigration issue with Chinese coming into Tibet to work. So when you hear about the U.S. grappling with that issue, what do you think from your perspective? Some politicians in the US are making the same arguments about immigration and border security and you know, limiting the number of people coming in.”

“All white Americans come from outside,” the Dalai Lama replied, before seemingly chuckling. “So I think if the several millions or hundred million come from outside, then you have to think seriously. A few millions, easily into this country. No problem.”

The spiritual leader also weighed in on the mass shooting attack in Orlando on Saturday, calling into question Baier’s suggestion that the gunman could have “killed in the name of religion.”

“The very word ‘Muslim terrorist’ — that, I think is wrong,” he said. “Terrorist is a terrorist. They are not strictly speaking, strictly speaking, they are not practicing religion. The general, genuine Muslim practitioner, wonderful people. And Islam, teach this practice of love. And they pray to Allah, Allah consider you see, is love.”
