Rand's Obamacare stats: 9.3 million new insureds, and counting

Source: LA TIMES

The long-awaited Rand Corp. study of Obamacare's effect on health insurance coverage was released Tuesday and confirmed the numbers that had been telegraphed for more than a week: At least 9.3 million more Americans have health insurance now than in September 2013, virtually all of them as a result of the law.

That's a net figure, accommodating all those who lost their individual health insurance because of cancellations. The Rand study confirms other surveys that placed the number of people who lost their old insurance and did not or could not replace it -- the focus of an enormous volume of anti-Obamacare rhetoric -- at less than 1 million. The Rand experts call this a "very small" number, less than 1% of the U.S. population age 18 to 64.

The Rand study was eagerly anticipated in part because of the dearth of hard information from other sources, including the federal and state governments, which are still compiling their statistics and may not have a full slate for months.

Mitch McConnell Compares ‘Obsession’ With Closing Gender Pay Gap To Blowing ‘A Few Kisses’

On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) honored Equal Pay Day — a day that symbolizes the amount of time it takes women to earn what men make in a year — by accusing Democrats and President Obama of a “never-ending political road show” that merely blows “a few kisses” to their voter base.

“Instead of focusing on jobs, he launched into another confusing attack on the left’s latest bizarre obsession,” McConnell said on the Senate floor Tuesday. “Just think about that. The percentage of Americans in the workforce is at an almost four-decade low, and Democrats chose to ignore serious job-creation ideas so they could blow a few kisses to their powerful pals on the left.”

More than a few kisses-
here you go Mitch:

Women represent nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers. 22% percent of minimum wage workers are women of color.More than three-quarters of women earning the minimum wage are 20 or older, and do not have a spouse’s income to rely on.70% of restaurant servers (the largest group of tipped minimum wage worker) are women – and their poverty rate is nearly 3 times higher than the rate for the workforce as a whole.

Women represent 76% of the low-wage workforce, defined as the ten largest low-paying occupations. Women of color are 37% of the low-wage workforce.

4.8 million working mothers would get a raise if the minimum wage was increased. Increasing the minimum wage would boost annual earnings by $5,700 – enough to pull a family of three out of poverty

Al Sharpton On FBI Work: I'm Not A Rat, 'I'm A Cat'

“Rats are usually people that were with other rats," Sharpton said, as quoted by the Observer. "I was not and am not a rat, because I wasn’t with the rats. I’m a cat. I chase rats.”

He argued The Smoking Gun's story was old news already disclosed in his 1996 book. As Sharpton's story goes, he went to police once he started receiving death threats for his activism, and then began taping interactions with mafia bosses.

Sharpton also said he wasn't surprised that the report dropped right before his National Action Network's annual summit, which both New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) and President Barack Obama were expected to attend.

“We’re used to the attacks,” he said, as quoted by the Observer. “The only thing I was embarrassed by was those old, fat pictures. Could y’all use tomorrow’s cover, the new slim (ones)?”

Bill O'Reilly Warns That The Hippies Are Coming For Rich White Guys

According to the Fox News pundit, many of the hippies who protested against the Vietnam War and "embraced sex, drugs and rock and roll" have grown up to become "authority figures today, especially in the media."

And those same aged hippies are now fueling the "grievance industry."

The "grievance industry," O'Reilly told us, has been exploited to no end by President Obama and the Democrats. It's been "legitimized" by the "politically correct media."

......................

"The grievance industry basically says that America is not a fair nation, that the deck is stacked against minorities, women, the poor, gays, atheists, Muslims — you name it," O'Reilly explained. "And the bad guys are white males, the Republican Party, and anybody who doesn't buy into the grievance industry."

Was McAllister "Set Up" For Praising Obama Admin & Urging That Obamacare Sign-Up Center Stay Open?

The curious thing about this is that McAllister, who voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, recently “praised the Obama administration for keeping open a call center dedicated to enrolling people into the law after the initial enrollment period,” according to Think Progress. So, was he set up by his fellow republicans?

Republicans Urged Obama To Keep Obamacare Sign-Up Center Open

A Republican Congressman who has sought to repeal the Affordable Care Act praised the Obama administration for keeping open a call center dedicated to enrolling people into the law after the initial enrollment period.

In a statement posted on his campaign website last week, Rep. Vance McAllister (R) revealed that he, along with Louisiana Senators Mary Landrieu (D) and David Vitter (R), lobbied General Dynamics, the company who operates the call center, to preserve the more than 600 jobs in the state.

“This is excellent news for the City of Bogalusa and the hundreds of high quality workers employed by General Dynamics whose jobs are now saved,” McAllister said.I’m pleased to see that the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services saw how important this is to my district and the state of Louisiana. As long as I am in office I will continue to fight for the health of our economy and the preservation of jobs.”

.................................

Over the weekend, Republicans came under criticism from conservatives for agreeing to a change that would expand choices for small businesses under the Affordable Care Act.

Sanders Sends Republicans Into Cold Sweats With a Truth Bomb About Obamacare,

Sen. Sanders said:

The Republicans have opposed the Affordable Care Act from day one. It is their nightmare that it succeeds. These are the same guys that want to end Medicare as we know it. Convert it into a voucher program, who want to make massive cuts into Medicaid. Who had eight years under Bush to do something, even a little thing, about healthcare, and they did nothing.

So these guys have nothing at all to say, and their nightmare is that as millions of people begin to get affordable health insurance, as the Medicaid program expands and people who have never had health insurance in their lives finally are able to go into a doctor. For the Republicans, this is a nightmare. Imagine, if the United States government does something for ordinary people and not just billionaires. What kind of nightmare is that. That is what their biggest fear is, Ed.

Their Nightmare
Bernie Sanders

Sen Sanders (I-VT) nailed it. Republicans are terrified that more people are going to be able to see a doctor. They are scared that people will realize that the government can make positive things happen, and they hate the ACA because it is an example of the government doing something for someone other than wealthy billionaires. ...

The ACA shatters this ideology. The Afforable Care Act demonstrates what happens when government acts in the best interests of the majority. Once people figure out that the Republicans were wrong about Obamacare, there is nothing stopping them from demanding that their government does things that benefit them.

The vision of a functional government that is responsive to the majority of its people gives billionaire controlled Republicans nightmares and causes them to break out into cold sweats. Bernie Sanders laid it out plain and clear. Obamacare could be just the beginning, and Republicans are terrified by the prospect of a government that works for the people.

More, "Not Torture"???

He was taken to a CIA black site called “Salt Pit” near Kabul.

At the secret prison, Baluchi endured a regime that included being dunked in a tub filled with ice water. CIA interrogators forcibly kept his head under the water while he struggled to breathe and beat him repeatedly, hitting him with a truncheon-like object and smashing his head against a wall, officials said.

Liz Cheney: Nancy Pelosi’s ‘spine doesn’t reach her brain’ if she’s not proud of torture

Liz Cheney: Nancy Pelosi’s ‘spine doesn’t reach her brain’ if she’s not proud of torture

..................

“Mrs. Pelosi is somebody who was briefed on the program. She forgot she was briefed on the program, later to admit it,” Liz Cheney remarked. ““When I heard those comments yesterday, I was reminded of something that Margaret Thatcher once said about one of her political opponents.”

“You know, Mrs. Pelosi’s problem is that her spine doesn’t seem to reach her brain.”

Liz Cheney also responded to Sen. Angus King (I-ME), who over the weekend had offered to waterboard Dick Cheney “hundreds” of times to prove to him that the interrogation technique was torture.

“The decision was made, it was absolutely the right decision, and certainly I hope that future presidents would make the decision again that you’ve got to waterboard somebody ,” Liz Cheney said. “Because it means that you’re going to get information to save lives and prevent attacks.”

FOX's Chris Wallace: "Personally, I would have waterboarded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed myself."

Wallace: We're going to be talking to Michael Hayden, the former CIA Director about a bunch of things including the changing talking points on Benghazi and also about the enhanced interrogation and whether or not the CIA covered up what was actually going on. Personally, I would have waterboarded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed myself.
