Thank Goodness that danger to society is locked away while Dick Cheney & George Zimmerman roam free

A judge sentenced an 84-year-old nun, Sister Megan Rice, on Tuesday to 35 months in prison for breaking into a facility where enriched uranium for nuclear bombs is stored. Two others who took part, Michael Walli and Greg Boertje-Obed, were sentenced to 62 months. The three were convicted of cutting fences and entering the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge in July 2012, embarrassing officials and prompting security changes. Judge Amul Thapar of Federal District Court said Sister Rice did not share the others’ criminal backgrounds. “Her crimes are minimal in comparison to the others,” the judge said. The three admitted to spray painting peace slogans and hammering on exterior walls of the facility. When a guard confronted them, they offered him food and began singing. The complex is the primary American site for processing and storage of enriched uranium -NYT

Walker Staffer's Deeply Racist "Dogs on Welfare" Emails Revealed

So I'm going through the Scott Walker documents and come across this:

The text of the caption is as follows:

"This morning I went to sign my Dogs up for welfare. At first the lady said, "Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare". So I explained to her that my Dogs are mixed in color, unemployed, lazy, can't speak English and have no frigging clue who their Daddys are. They expect me to feed them, provide them with housing and medical care, and feel guilty because they are dogs. So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify. My Dogs get their first checks Friday."

VW threatens to block any future expansion plans in the South, citing conservative interference

Reuters reports this morning that Volkswagen’s “top labor representative” has threatened to block any future expansion plans in the South, citing conservative interference in the United Auto Workers vote in Chattanooga.

Quoting an interview with a German newspaper, the news service reports Bernd Osterloh, head of VW’s works council, as saying he can imagine further expansion in the United States, but it probably won’t be in the South unless some sort of labor representation is established in the Chattanooga plant. Workers in Germany have representation on corporate boards, giving them a say in citing decisions.

Osterloh’s remarks seem to contradict statements by U.S. Sen. Bob Corker and others that Chattanooga would get another vehicle if workers rejected UAW representation. Osterloh describes such talk as conservative “interference.”

On the other hand, the debate may not be over. The Associated Press quotes Osterloh as saying he hasn’t given up on bringing labor representation to Chattanooga, citing the same interview.

Judge strikes down Nebraska law that allowed Keystone XL pipeline to proceed through the state
February 19, 2014 - 1:03 PM
LINCOLN, Neb. - A judge has struck down a Nebraska law that allowed the Keystone XL oil pipeline to proceed through the state.

Lancaster County Judge Stephanie Stacy issued a ruling Wednesday that invalidated Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman's approval of the route. Stacy says the decision should have been made by the Nebraska Public Service Commission, which regulates pipelines and other utilities.

The ruling could cause more delays in finishing the pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada to Texas refineries.

But it's a win for Nebraska-based pipeline opponents. They've argued that Heineman exceeded his authority when he approved the route in January 2013.

The ruling includes a permanent injunction preventing Gov. Dave Heineman and the DEQ from taking any further action to authorize or advance the pipeline under the law.

FIGHTING: Cattle buyer Randy Thompson of Nebraska is one of three landowners who challenged the constitutionality of a law governing the siting of the Keystone XL oil pipeline through Nebraska.
David Domina, who represented the landowners, said in a press release, “The court’s action effectively rescinds Governor Heineman’s notification to President Barack Obama that Nebraska legal procedures had been satisfied.”

“Now, it is back to the drawing board for Governor Heineman and the Legislature,” said Domina, who is running for the U.S. Senate. “Under the court’s ruling, TransCanada has no approved route in Nebraska. TransCanada is not authorized to condemn the property against Nebraska landowners. The pipeline project is at standstill in this state.”

Pipeline fighters in Nebraska have long claimed TransCanada, the Canadian company trying to get the Keystone XL pipeline approved, basically wrote the bill. The lawsuit also contended lawmakers didn’t have the authority to grant a foreign company condemnation powers.

NESTLE Hot Pockets recalled, may contain “diseased and unsound animals”

WEDNESDAY, FEB 19, 2014 09:27 AM PST
A massive California meat recall is affecting the popular microwave snack

Nestlé is recalling certain varieties of Hot Pockets after learning they’ve potentially been stuffed with “diseased and unsound animals.”

The company is voluntarily pulling the product from the shelves as part of a massive USDA recall of 8.7 million pounds of meat processed by Rancho Feeding Corp. The meat in question, per the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, is “unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce.” According to Nestlé, a “small quantity” of that meat may have made its way into the Hot Pockets produced at its California facility.

The affected products are Hot Pockets brand Philly Steak and Cheese in three different pack sizes, and Hot Pockets brand Croissant Crust Philly Steak and Cheese in the two-pack box (more details on the specific batch numbers here). Other flavors — Ham & Cheese, Meatballs & Mozzarella, Bacon Cheddar Cheese Melt, etc. — are safe.

Dear Abby offers some advice to anti-gay couple in today's column

You might remember the classic response to a homophobic writer from Pauline Phillips, the original "Abby," more than thirty years ago:

Well, today, Pauline's daughter Jeanne, who has been writing the column since 2002, deals with a very similar letter. Get a load of this steaming pile of hate from "Unhappy in Tampa":

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I relocated to Florida a little over a year ago and were quickly welcomed into our new neighbors' social whirl. Two couples in the neighborhood are gay -- one male, one female. While they are nice enough, my husband and I did not include them when it was our turn to host because we do not approve of their lifestyle choices. Since then, we have been excluded from neighborhood gatherings, and someone even suggested that we are bigots!

Abby, we moved here from a conservative community where people were pretty much the same. If people were "different," they apparently kept it to themselves. I don't feel we should have to compromise our values just to win the approval of our neighbors. But really, who is the true bigot here? Would you like to weigh in? -- Unhappy in Tampa

DEAR UNHAPPY: I sure would. The first thing I'd like to say is that regardless of what you were told in your previous community, a person's sexual orientation isn't a "lifestyle choice." Gay people can't change being gay any more than you can change being heterosexual.

From where I sit, you may have chosen the wrong place to live because it appears you would be happier in a less integrated neighborhood surrounded by people who think the way you do. But if you interact only with people like yourselves, you will have missed a chance for growth, which is what you have been offered here. Please don't blow it.
