The elephant in the room regarding public school education -

1 in 5 children in the US is living in poverty:

I would venture to guess that that means a hell of a lot more kids are living in families where both parents are working multiple part time jobs.

Many of these kids are not encultured to try to succeed at school; often times they have no idea what skills are needed to succeed at school.

Figure a class of 30 first graders, 6 of whom need special attention to learn to read and do simple arithmetic. Now, let's get more realistic, and note that residential areas in the US tend to be segregated economically. Maybe half or more of those 30 kids needs one-on-one on a regular basis.

When school starts this fall, take a look at the kindergartners and first graders - they're excited and interested. Take a look at the older kids. Only two or three years older, and already they have dropped out even if they are physically present.

Question on broody hen -

She is very dedicated and has been setting a few weeks. the problem is that other hens have been sneaking eggs into her nest and stepping on and breaking some. I don't know how old the eggs she's setting on are, and the shells are pretty dirty.

I can easily move her to an isolated nest on clean straw and stick some fresh eggs underneath her. That worked for me with another hen. I don't want to do it if there is any chance of her hatching the eggs she has now. Am I safe to assume that if the shells are dirty, the chick inside is dead?

Can I get a "Bravo!" for Ms. Oprah Winfrey?

Her magazine features an article about hair that asserts the right of every women to wear her hair (or even shave it off!) however she pleases! The article actually uses the word "kinky" as a description of hair texture and not as a pejorative. Go natural, dye it, perm it, straighten it, go short, go long, whatever suits your fancy! No one needs to match a certain ideal to feel good about themself!

Just to be fair - I think these women are spending a ridiculous amount of money on purses:

Jennifer Anniston

Miranda Kerr

Jessica Alba, Miranda, Kate Beckinsale, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Bosworth, Nina Dobrev, Elizabeth,

I can see someone spending up to about $250 for a purse they plan on using for 5 or 10 years - just as I can see spending that money on a well made pair of shoes meant to last that long!

What's really sad is the number of people making money trying to tell the rest of us that owning such expensive items should be our goal in life!

Methotrexate, anyone?

My rheumy doesn't want me on prednisone very long. My main problem is autoimmune fatigue, which the prednisone dopes wonders for. I think we will be talking methotrexate as the next step.

I have to admit - while I used to donate blood and handle blood draws without any problems, something about injections leaves me

The larger truth about Hiroshima, Dresden, Tokyo:

there is no such thing as a "Good War".

War may or may not be forced upon us, but there is no such thing as a "Good War".
