Ceremony Renames Andrew Jackson Post Office - Removing AJ's name/signage considered "problematic"

Ceremony Renames Andrew Jackson Post Office for Susan A. Davis

The unveiled plaque read “This Building Is Named In Honor of Susan A. Davis by an Act of Congress, Public Law 117-314, December 27, 2022.” However, a legend will remain for the foreseeable future in large letters atop the Post Office Building stating: “United States Post Office, Andrew Jackson Station, San Diego, California 92115.” No congressional appropriation has been made to replace the lettering, and according to Davis, such an appropriation is problematic because such legislation would have to incorporate not only this post office branch but other renamed post office branches throughout the nation.

Rep. Sara Jacobs Introduces Bipartisan Bill to Rename Rolando Post Office After Former San Diego Rep. Susan Davis

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-53) introduced bipartisan legislation (H.R. 9308), with the support of all 52 of her House colleagues from California including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, to rename the Rolando post office as the Susan A. Davis Post Office. Congresswoman Jacobs selected her predecessor, former Congresswoman Susan Davis, in honor of her more than 20 years of public service, overwhelming support from Rolando constituents and voters, and her dedication to fighting for improving education, supporting service members and veterans, pushing for LGBTQ+ equality, and more.

“Congresswoman Davis is a friend and mentor, who embodies the best of San Diego,” said Congresswoman Sara Jacobs. “Throughout her more than 20 years of public service, she always put her constituents first and fiercely advocated and delivered for our kids, students, families, service members and veterans, and the LGBTQ+ community. I’m thankful for this community-led effort, in partnership with Council President Sean Elo-Rivera’s office, and the resounding support from my California colleagues to honor Congresswoman Davis and the impact she had on Rolando and all of San Diego.”

“It is an honor to be a sustaining part of the Rolando community with a post office that is so symbolic of neighborhood service. Postal workers are all dedicated to their mission of being an important link to the world outside of each resident,” said former Congresswoman Susan Davis. “I thank Congresswoman Jacobs for bringing this forward and my colleagues for supporting it.”

“Congresswoman Susan Davis stands as an inspiration to all San Diegans for her decades of hard work and dedication to our communities,” said Council President Sean Elo-Rivera. “This post office naming will honor her legacy and remind everyone about the importance of service to our neighbors.”

“I can think of no better example of a dedicated public servant than former Congresswoman Davis,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “From a career that started in social work to the California State Assembly to the U.S. House of Representatives, Susan has dedicated her life to our city, our state and our nation. Renaming this post office is a fitting tribute to her service and so well deserved.”

Rename the Andrew Jackson Post Office (San Diego)

I got on the news three times last week.

CBS8, NBC7 and KUSI did stories on this little idea I had after asking people on NextDoor why my neighborhood post office in Rolando, San Diego is named after the guy responsible for the trail of tears.

City Council President Georgette Gomez even sent a letter of endorsement. I think we're on to something.

She's running for retiring Rep. Susan Davis's seat in my district (CA-53), so if she wins I feel confident that she will propose a bill to actually change the name.

Andrew Jackson owned slaves and was arguably responsible for more atrocities than any other president. He was also the first Democratic president. I've heard that renaming a post office is usually the least controversial legislation, but does anyone else think this is controversial among democrats because he was a Dem? For any other reason?

With all that's going on with all the monuments being removed and names being changed after the killing of George Floyd, I think it just makes sense.

I almost forgot to add a direct link to the petition. Please do sign and share if it interests you. It's a federal building and it requires the entire House to vote on it, so you don't have to be a local to have a voice about this.

Got a letter about Bergdahl published in the local paper.

The formatting's not so hot and I always think I could have refined the language in it, but the substance is pretty good, I think.

I hope this is the right place to post here.

Warren County built a courtroom wrong. Now they want to change the state constitution.

This makes me so angry.

New Jersey Sen. Michael Doherty proposes bill to give counties power over courtroom costs

As Warren County and the state judiciary continue to squabble over who should foot the bill to fix a courtroom declared by a judge to be unconstitutional, one state lawmaker has proposed legislation to give counties the final say in courthouse expenditures.

Sen. Michael Doherty said he plans to introduce a bill that would give county officials final authority on costs related to courtrooms, judges' chambers, equipment and supplies. The bill would also give the county's elected officials the power to determine whether courtroom facilities are "suitable" according to the terms of the law.

Such changes would "prevent the spendthrift state judiciary from wasting county taxpayer dollars in these kinds of disputes," said Doherty, R-Warren/Hunterdon.

...

Soon after the renovations were complete, Superior Court Judge Ann Bartlett ruled that a 6-inch-wide support pillar in the courtroom, which blocks the defense table's line of sight to the jury box and witness stand, made trials held there unconstitutional.

The rules that said you can't block a defense table's view of the jury and the witness stand were around when they approved the plans. Now this GOP county screwed up and are trying to blame the Democratically controlled state government.

DU Consv. Idiot Crusaded Against Child Porn Now Accused of Assaulting 15yo

This is a very bizarre case.

Joey Dauben Crusaded Against Child Porn. Now He's Accused of Assaulting a 15-Year-Old Boy.
By Anna Merlan Thu., Dec. 22 2011

Perhaps you've heard by now: Joey Dauben, publisher of the Ellis County Observer and several other small-town papers and websites throughout North Texas, has been indicted and arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy. The 30-year-old Dauben, who Patrick Michels profiled in an Observer cover story earlier this year, was arrested by Texas Rangers at his grandmother's house in Mabank late Monday afternoon. He currently sits in Navarro County Jail; his bond has been set at $200,000.

Dauben stands accused of three counts of sexual assault on a child, one count of indecency with a child, and sexual contact. All charges stem from an alleged incident in 2007, during a retreat for a now-defunct church, Olive Tree Ministries, at Navarro Mills Lake.

...

Anonymous friends told WFAA they believe Dauben has been falsely accused in retaliation for his reporting. An article posted on the ECO homepage states, "This accuser has a history of falsely making accusations," and posts the bulk of a MySpace conversation from 2007. Both names in the conversation are redacted.

"He spends 80 hours a week trying to expose corruption and fights against this kind of stuff," Bridge says. "He spends so much time and energy just trying to make sure that kids and people who are victims ... have a voice and whatnot." Brandy Owen, managing editor for the Ellis County Observer, posted an update to their blog yesterday stating that she'd received a phone call informing her Dauben has been placed on suicide watch.
