(AP) HONOLULU - A $2.2 million expedition that hoped to find wreckage from famed aviator Amelia Earhart's final flight is on its way back to Hawaii without the dramatic, conclusive plane images searchers were hoping to attain.

But the group leading the search, The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, still believes Earhart and her navigator crashed onto a reef off a remote island in the Pacific Ocean 75 years ago this month, its president told The Associated Press on Monday.

"This is just sort of the way things are in this world," TIGHAR president Pat Thrasher said. "It's not like an Indiana Jones flick where you go through a door and there it is. It's not like that - it's never like that."

Thrasher said the group collected a significant amount of video and sonar data, which searchers will pore over on the return voyage to Hawaii this week and afterward to look for things that may be tough to see at first glance.

(Reuters) - Two people were killed and at least 19 injured in a shooting at an outdoor party in Toronto, police said on Tuesday, raising fresh fears of a rise in gun crime in Canada's largest city.

Police said it was too early to say what prompted the shooting late on Monday in which a young man and young woman were killed. Many of those hurt were injured in the panic that ensued after shots were fired.

"This is the most serious crime of its kind to ever take place in the city of Toronto," Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair told reporters at the scene.

Coming barely six weeks after a shooting at a shopping mall that killed one and wounded six, it is likely to raise fears about the use of guns in a city which takes pride in its relatively low crime rate compared with U.S. urban centers.

Evacuation order issued for 240000 people hit by heavy rains on main southern island of Kyushu.

Almost a quarter of a million people have been ordered to leave their homes in southwest Japan as heavy rain pounds the area for the third day, leaving at least 20 people dead, officials and reports say.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of more landslides and floods on the main southern island of Kyushu as rainfall of up to 11 centimetres per hour was recorded early on Saturday.

The agency warned that rainfall of up to 80 millimetres per hour could hit parts of northern Kyushu later in the day.

Member of parliament among the 20 killed in an attack on his daughter's wedding in the northern Samangan province.


At least 20 people, including a member of parliament, have been killed and some 40 others injured in a suicide attack in northern Afghanistan.

The bomber is understood to have targeted a wedding party for MP Ahmad Khan's daughter in Samangan Province.

The head of intelligence for the province, Mohammed Khan, was also killed in early Saturday and among the injured are senators and MPs.

This attack comes a day after a regional head of women's affairs was targeted and killed by a car bomb in Afghanistan's east.

Hanifa Safi was killed while driving through the capital of Laghman province, Mehtar Lam, when a bomb attached to her car exploded, provincial governor spokesman Sarhadi Zwak said.
